Usually, a PC actively playing or encoding a 24/7 YouTube stream will use more electricity than the same PC sitting awake and idle—but there is no reliable universal wattage or bill estimate. The difference depends on the computer, stream resolution, display and peripherals, and whether you mean watching a stream or running the encoder. Measure the same setup in both states to get an answer for your own PC.
First, decide what “streaming” and “idle” mean
Watching a YouTube livestream on a PC is not the same workload as using a PC to encode and send a livestream to YouTube. YouTube supports several ways to stream, including an encoder, and its live dashboards report audience and stream-performance measures such as duration, concurrent viewers and watch time—not electricity use (YouTube streaming methods; YouTube Live Control Room metrics).
For a useful comparison, define idle as the computer awake with its usual background services running but not playing or encoding the stream. Sleep and shutdown are separate states: comparing streaming with a sleeping or powered-off PC answers a different question. Decide, too, whether your measurement includes the monitor and peripherals.
What published energy figures do—and do not—tell you
The International Energy Agency gives a broad estimate of about 0.08 kWh per hour of video streaming. Actual energy use varies with the device, network connection and resolution, and the estimate is not specific to YouTube Live or to the extra power a particular PC uses above its idle draw (IEA, 2020).

Other benchmarks answer different questions. ENERGY STAR says a computer uses 11 times as much energy as a digital media player in its cited comparison, and that certified products that enable streaming use 25% less energy on average. These are category-level comparisons, not measurements of one PC streaming versus that same PC idle. ENERGY STAR also says certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models, through efficient components and better management while idle; it estimates that enabling power management on a certified desktop can save an office or home office $15 per year. Neither figure predicts the result for an individual setup (ENERGY STAR digital media players; ENERGY STAR computers).
Platform or data-center energy figures also should not be treated as a PC’s wall-power reading. Google’s Display & Video 360 carbon-footprint report excludes data transmission, media production and end-user devices; its documentation describes allocating data-center machine energy between workload (“dynamic power”) and “idle power.” The reporting boundary matters: a figure for a platform or data center does not automatically include the viewer’s computer (Google Display & Video 360 Help).

Measure the difference on your own PC
- Choose the boundary. Decide whether you are measuring the PC alone or the PC plus monitor and peripherals. Keep that choice consistent in both tests.
- Measure awake-idle power. Use a plug-in watt meter at the AC outlet and record average watts over a representative period with the PC awake and its ordinary background services running. ENERGY STAR’s computer measurement material describes AC-source measurement with an approved meter (ENERGY STAR computer test method).
- Measure the actual stream workload. Repeat for a representative period while watching the stream, or while encoding and sending it if you are the creator. Keep the same computer, peripherals and measurement boundary. Note the playback resolution and display configuration, or the encoder settings, so the result describes what you actually do.
- Compare average watts and calculate energy. Subtract awake-idle average watts from stream-period average watts to find the measured difference. For energy over a period, use kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. For a continuous workload, multiply its measured average watts by 24 hours per day and the number of days, then divide by 1,000.
- Test sleep or shutdown separately. If you would otherwise let the PC sleep or turn it off, measure or obtain a reading for that mode separately; do not label it idle. Power management can reduce computer energy use (ENERGY STAR computers).
For example, if your own meter readings are 70 W while awake-idle and 110 W during the workload, the measured difference is 40 W. Over 24 hours that difference is 0.96 kWh (40 × 24 ÷ 1,000). Those numbers are only an illustration of the calculation, not a typical-PC estimate or a measurement of any particular stream.
What changes the result
- Playback versus encoding: watching video and encoding a live stream are different workloads, so measure the activity you mean.
- Resolution and display setup: playback resolution and display configuration affect what your test represents. Record them rather than treating one result as universal.
- Measurement boundary: adding a monitor or peripherals changes the total; compare like with like.
- Operating mode: awake-idle, sleep and off are distinct states with different power use.
- Duration: average watts describe the rate of use; multiply by hours to estimate energy for the period.
