To loop a playlist on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put compatible media files in an FFmpeg concat list, read that list with -stream_loop -1, and send the output to YouTube’s ingest URL with the stream key from YouTube Studio. That repeats the input, but it does not keep a computer, network, or failed FFmpeg process running: uninterrupted streaming requires testing and monitoring.
What you need before starting
- A current FFmpeg build with the video and audio encoders you plan to use. Check available encoders with
ffmpeg -encoders. - Video files with compatible streams and parameters, plus a working directory where you can create
playlist.txt. - A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and an encoder stream configured in YouTube Studio.
- A computer, power supply, and sustained internet upload capacity sufficient for the stream. A wired connection can be useful, but it is not a requirement established by YouTube’s setup instructions.
If your library is large, local storage capacity depends on the size and number of your media files. An external drive is optional; it does not change FFmpeg or YouTube’s streaming requirements.
Configure a YouTube encoder stream and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule an encoder stream. See YouTube’s encoder stream setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, and source control. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your FFmpeg command. See Manage live stream settings.
- Choose the stream’s privacy and any applicable auto-start or auto-stop settings in YouTube Studio. Confirm the intended stream lifecycle before sending a feed.
Prepare a playlist FFmpeg can concatenate
The concat demuxer joins media streams, so files work most reliably when they have the same stream layout and compatible codecs, time bases, and parameters. If the files differ in resolution, codec, audio layout, or other stream properties, normalize them first or use a filter/re-encode workflow and test the transitions. FFmpeg explains the distinction between concatenating streams and concatenating through a filter in its FAQ.
Create a file named playlist.txt in your working directory:

Use paths appropriate to your files. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer defaults to safe path checks; simple relative filenames such as these work with the default. For absolute paths or other path forms, review the FFmpeg formats documentation. Only disable safety checks for a list you trust. A long-running playlist should also be checked for missing files, unintended gaps, and clips that produce blank or silent sections.
Run FFmpeg and send the stream to YouTube
This illustrative command reads the list at playback speed, loops it indefinitely, encodes predictable H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream over RTMPS. Replace the URL and key placeholders with the values from YouTube Studio; do not publish a command containing your actual key.

This uses processing resources, with the load depending on the FFmpeg build and encoder. The command’s-maxrateand-bufsizeare encoder controls, not a substitute for testing actual output and connection stability.-b:a 128ksets the sample audio bitrate to YouTube’s documented stereo AAC recommendation. Ensure the input actually has suitable audio; audio-only tracks and images need appropriate video/audio generation and mapping options rather than this example unchanged.
YouTube recommends RTMPS when available, describing it as a secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder settings guidance also recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, says not to exceed four seconds, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). For 60 fps, a two-second GOP corresponds to 120 frames. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Choose bitrate and resolution for the actual connection
Do not set the output rate equal to a speed-test peak. YouTube advises choosing a quality the available connection can sustain reliably; leave headroom for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. Test the sustained upload available from the streaming machine, then verify the live stream’s health while it is running.

| Setting | Documented guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps video bitrate | YouTube Help’s current page, accessed 2026, lists an AV1/H.265 ingest range of 3–8 Mbps and a 10 Mbps recommended bitrate for H.264. | Use the figure for the selected codec, not the AV1/H.265 range as an H.264 maximum. The example command uses H.264, so its 4500 kbps value is not YouTube’s stated H.264 recommendation for this mode. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds, per YouTube Help current page accessed 2026. | At 30 fps, use a 60-frame GOP for two seconds; at 60 fps, use 120 frames. |
| Stereo AAC audio bitrate | 128 kbps, per YouTube Help current page accessed 2026. | The sample command uses -b:a 128k; confirm the content and output channel layout are appropriate. |
These are YouTube documentation recommendations, not independent performance measurements. If your source files are not 1080p30, choose settings appropriate to the content and the encoder. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing the encoder and checking the stream preview and quality.
Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Start FFmpeg and open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Wait for the incoming preview; check that both picture and audio are present and that the stream health indicator is acceptable.
- Run a private or unlisted test first. Watch at least one transition between playlist entries, and inspect FFmpeg’s terminal output for input errors, dropped frames, or encoder exits.
- Confirm or start the YouTube broadcast according to the stream’s settings. Continue monitoring the FFmpeg process, host, network, and Live Control Room rather than assuming that a successful initial connection guarantees continuity.
What looping does—and does not—guarantee
-stream_loop -1 repeats FFmpeg’s specified input. It does not supervise the process, restart a failed machine, restore power, provide internet failover, or ensure uninterrupted playback at YouTube. A service manager or watchdog can be configured to restart a failed process, but that setup must be tested separately; a restart can interrupt the broadcast or require a new ingest session. If uptime is important, plan and test process, power, and network recovery rather than treating input looping as a reliability system.

For long broadcasts, note YouTube’s stated archive rule carefully: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived in full. Check YouTube’s current long-stream archive behavior, and record locally if retaining the complete program matters. See YouTube’s encoder stream guidance.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects a playlist path | The concat demuxer’s default safe-path checks reject a path or directive. | Prefer relative filenames in the working directory. If you need other paths, consult the safe option documentation; use -safe 0 only for a trusted playlist. |
| Playback fails or breaks at a clip boundary | Inputs have mismatched streams, codecs, time bases, resolutions, or parameters. | Normalize the media to compatible streams, or use a filter/re-encode workflow. Test the transition between every distinct format in the library before running unattended. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The encoder may be using the wrong server URL or stream key, or may not be sending a supported stream. | Recheck the URL and key in YouTube Studio, confirm FFmpeg is still running, and inspect its output for connection or encoder errors. Reset a compromised key and replace it in the command. |
| Stream health deteriorates or frames drop | The chosen bitrate may exceed sustained uplink capacity, or the host may not encode fast enough. | Reduce output demands as needed, verify sustained upload rather than peak speed, and check encoder load. YouTube advises matching quality to a reliable connection and monitoring stream health. |
| Video appears but audio is absent or wrong | Input audio streams may differ or be missing, or the output mapping may not match the media. | Inspect the files’ stream layouts and test the playlist. Add suitable mapping or audio-generation options for the actual source rather than assuming the example command creates missing tracks. |
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stops | A process failure, bad input, host shutdown, power loss, or network interruption can end delivery. | Check the terminal log and host/network status. Configure and test a supervisor or fallback separately; an automatic process restart does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube session. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use stream copy instead of re-encoding?
Yes, if every playlist input already has compatible codecs and stream properties accepted by the concat demuxer and YouTube. Test the actual media; otherwise normalize or re-encode.
Will a 24-hour YouTube stream be archived in full?
YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule covers streams under 12 hours; it does not establish full archiving of an uninterrupted 24-hour stream.
