To put a podcast episode on YouTube with a custom background image, either submit an eligible show’s RSS feed and let YouTube create static-image videos from its cover art, or combine the episode audio and your chosen image into a video file and upload it. YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist of videos, so an MP3 alone is not an episode. Keep the square podcast cover separate from the usually landscape thumbnail for an individual video.
Choose an upload method
| Method | What YouTube does | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| RSS feed | Creates static-image videos from the show artwork for selected feed episodes; new episodes can upload automatically. | An audio-first podcast whose feed and cover art are already maintained, if RSS ingestion is available in the creator’s region. |
| Prepared video file | Uploads a video you have made from the episode audio and image, or from an audiogram or other visuals. | Creators who want to choose a different background or visual treatment for each episode and control each file before upload. |
YouTube describes both static-image uploads and audiograms or dynamic video as ways to turn an audio podcast into audiovisual content. The RSS and manual-upload workflows are distinct; choose based on regional availability and how much control you want over episode visuals and corrections. See YouTube’s RSS feed guidance and podcast distribution guidance.
Option 1: Submit an RSS feed
- In YouTube Studio, submit your podcast’s RSS feed and select the episodes you want to bring in. RSS ingestion is available only in select countries or regions; if the option is unavailable to you, use the prepared-video method below. See YouTube’s RSS instructions.
- Check that the show artwork in the feed is the image you want behind the episodes. YouTube uses that artwork to create static-image videos for selected episodes.
- Review the imported episodes before making the podcast public. RSS setup begins with videos private, giving you a chance to check them first.
- For future episodes, YouTube can upload new feed episodes automatically. Review publishing controls and access requirements in YouTube’s RSS publishing instructions.
Know what RSS updates do—and do not do
RSS ingestion does not distribute your podcast to other platforms, automatically synchronize edits to show details, or replace audio on an already-published episode when the feed source changes. To correct episode audio, re-upload it from the RSS feed; the previous YouTube video becomes private. Plan to review the YouTube version as its own publication rather than assuming edits to your podcast feed will update it.
Option 2: Make a video with your custom image
For a manual upload, combine the episode audio with the image or visuals you want viewers to see, export the result as a video file, then upload that video as an episode. A still image can remain on screen for the episode; alternatively, YouTube identifies audiograms and dynamic video as formats for audiovisual podcasts. The exact editing steps depend on the software you use, but the key requirement is that the upload be a video containing the episode—not an MP3 by itself.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare the episode video. Add the full episode audio and your chosen background image to a video project, then export a video file. Listen to the export or inspect it before uploading to catch missing audio, unintended silence, or an incorrect image.
- Create or choose the podcast playlist. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then New podcast. Add the show title, description, visibility, and square podcast thumbnail. You may need to verify your account. If you already have a suitable playlist, you can designate it as a podcast instead. Follow YouTube’s podcast setup instructions.
- Upload and add the episode video. Add the newly uploaded video—or an existing episode video—to the podcast playlist. Keep this playlist for full-length episodes from the show, not clips or other shows.
- Set the episode thumbnail separately if desired. A custom episode thumbnail is a separate image from the podcast’s square artwork. Custom video thumbnails require an eligible account; see YouTube’s thumbnail guidance.
- Check the playlist order and details. Use the show name for the podcast title and a useful description. YouTube suggests newest-to-oldest ordering for episodic shows and oldest-to-newest for serial shows. Its podcast discovery tips cover playlist composition and ordering.
Use the right artwork for each surface
| Asset | Shape and guidance | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Podcast/show thumbnail | Square, 1:1; YouTube recommends 1280 × 1280 pixels. | The podcast playlist or show artwork. RSS-generated static-image episode videos use the show art. |
| Episode video thumbnail | Generally 16:9 for a video thumbnail. | The individual episode video, when you upload a custom thumbnail and your account is eligible. |
These are separate assets: a square show cover does not take the place of a landscape thumbnail for an individual episode video. Make separate crops if you want artwork suited to both placements. YouTube’s custom-thumbnail page says file-size limits vary by device: desktop lists a 50 MB limit for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails, while mobile limits differ. Check the live thumbnail guidance before exporting because limits can change.
Use images you have the rights to use, and make sure thumbnail artwork complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube’s podcast setup page and thumbnail guidance explain the relevant requirements.

Keep the podcast organized and eligible
- Use one podcast playlist for each show and include full-length episodes from all seasons in it. Avoid mixing clips, other shows, or videos uploaded from other channels.
- Give the podcast a clear show title and useful description; title each video by episode name, optionally adding the show name.
- Follow the order that fits the format: newest to oldest for episodic shows, oldest to newest for serial shows.
- Podcast features may include YouTube Music availability and audio-only playback, but eligibility is not guaranteed. Some playlists are ineligible, including content not owned by the creator. Shorts that promote a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music. Check YouTube’s podcast guidance for current eligibility details.
Copyright, sponsorships, and monetization checks
Review each episode for copyright and monetization issues before publishing. Only use music, images, and other material you have permission to include. If an episode contains branded content such as a host-read promotion, sponsorship, or endorsement, declare it using the relevant YouTube setting and follow applicable policies. See YouTube’s RSS guidance and RSS publishing controls.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Problem | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot find the RSS submission option. | RSS ingestion is available only in select countries or regions. | Check YouTube’s current RSS availability and setup guidance. If it is not available, create a video file with the episode audio and image and upload it manually. |
| An episode appears with the wrong image. | RSS-generated videos use the show artwork from the feed. | For a manual workflow, prepare a video with the intended episode image. For RSS, check the show art and remember that changing feed details does not automatically synchronize already-published YouTube show details or episode audio. |
| A feed audio correction did not change the published YouTube episode. | Changes to the source feed do not automatically replace audio in an already-published episode. | Re-upload the corrected episode from the RSS feed. YouTube says the previous video becomes private. |
| Your custom thumbnail will not upload. | Custom thumbnails require an eligible account, and file-size limits vary by device. | Check account eligibility, use a 16:9 episode thumbnail, and confirm the current device-specific limits on YouTube’s thumbnail page. |
| The podcast playlist does not appear to include a video or podcast feature. | The playlist may not meet podcast eligibility requirements; content not owned by the creator can be ineligible. | Confirm that the playlist is designated as a podcast and contains full-length episodes from your show. Review podcast setup and eligibility guidance. |
