To show different prerecorded videos at set times on a 24/7 YouTube channel, schedule a YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio and use an encoder or cloud service that can schedule playlist changes. Studio schedules the event; it does not switch between video files on a clock. The encoder sends the feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key.
What you need before scheduling video changes
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Video files you have the rights to stream, plus an encoder or service that supports playlists and time-based transitions.
- A stable internet connection from the encoder to YouTube, and a plan for monitoring, restarts, and backup content.
YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to schedule an event and connect an encoder, but it does not document timed switching among prerecorded files. Confirm that your chosen encoder or service can run the exact playlist schedule you need before building a continuous channel around it.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Manage and schedule a stream. Scheduling gives viewers an upcoming event to find and lets them opt in to reminders; it does not automate changes to the video feed. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Set the event title, visibility, and other stream details in Studio.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into your encoder. The URL is the destination; the key identifies the stream. Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. Manage live stream settings.
- Set up the encoder’s playlist and time-based transitions separately. Specify which file should play at each time, what happens between files, and what should happen when the playlist ends. Labels and controls vary by encoder or service; YouTube Studio does not provide this timed-file-switching function.
- Start the encoder, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and then start the scheduled event when ready. Test beforehand and monitor both picture and sound. YouTube live-streaming tips.
Choose how to run the playlist continuously
Software encoder on a computer
A software encoder can send your feed to YouTube and may suit a channel that already has a suitable computer and an encoder with playlist scheduling. Configure the schedule in that software, not in Studio. The computer, encoder, media files, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue, so plan for power or network interruptions and check how the software resumes playback and reconnects.
Dedicated hardware encoder
YouTube lists hardware encoders as an option and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. Hardware is optional, not a requirement for every prerecorded stream. Before buying, verify that a specific model supports the protocol, resolution, file playback, playlist scheduling, and recovery behavior you need; the YouTube guidance does not recommend a particular model or establish that all hardware encoders can schedule prerecorded files.

Cloud streaming service
A cloud service can keep the feed running without relying on a computer at home, but playlist scheduling and recovery features differ by provider. Confirm that the service accepts your video files, supports the timing pattern you require, and can send a compatible feed to YouTube. YouTube’s list of encoder options includes third-party services, but inclusion alone does not establish that a service supports your particular playlist workflow.
Set the stream protocol and quality
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. In your encoder, use the YouTube-provided stream URL and key, choose a supported resolution and frame rate appropriate to your source video and upload connection, and check the encoder’s codec, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings against YouTube’s current guidance. HLS is another YouTube ingestion option for certain codec or HDR needs. It has higher latency than RTMP and requires a transport-stream segment format, a rolling playlist, and segment durations from 1 to 4 seconds. A schedule of prerecorded videos does not itself require HLS; use it only when your encoder and stream requirements call for it. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Plan around stream length and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24/7 event will be automatically archived under the same behavior. The cited YouTube guidance does not describe a way to bypass or extend that archive condition, so confirm current platform behavior and plan stream restarts or archive handling with your encoder or service. A continuous channel may therefore require an operational schedule that accounts for event duration as well as video rotation. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Test and monitor a 24/7 schedule
- Run a test stream and verify the Studio preview before relying on the schedule.
- Check sound and picture after each scheduled transition, including that the next file starts at the intended time.
- Decide how the encoder should behave if a file is unavailable, a playlist ends, or the connection drops.
- Set up a way to notice an interrupted feed, and define who or what restarts it.
- Keep a backup source or content plan so a failed file or encoder does not leave the channel without a feed.
- Check that each video is accessible to the intended audience and that the event is visible as intended.
YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. The exact alerting and recovery setup depends on the encoder or service you choose. YouTube live-streaming tips.

The scheduled event is live, but the video never changes
The event schedule and the media playlist are separate. Set up timed transitions in the encoder or cloud service, and confirm its schedule is enabled and assigned to the correct stream.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and key for the scheduled event, that it is sending to YouTube, and that Live Control Room shows an incoming preview. If a key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder with the new key.
The feed stops when the computer is off
A software encoder running on that computer depends on it staying powered on, connected, and running the encoder. Use a suitable always-on computer or move the workflow to a cloud service if you do not want a home computer to host the feed.

The stream runs longer than expected, but there is no expected archive
YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Review how your workflow handles event duration and archives; do not assume a 24/7 event produces an archive in the same way.
The picture or sound is unstable
Test the encoder’s quality settings against the available upload connection, check audio and video in the preview, and adjust the encoder settings using YouTube’s current recommendations. Use RTMPS unless a specific requirement calls for another ingestion option.
