The project, now called Cyberpunk 2 and formerly known as Project Orion, entered preproduction in May 2025. Some fans want a new protagonist; others hope to see V again, but online threads are not representative polling.
Has CD PROJEKT RED named V’s replacement?
No protagonist has been identified in the official sequel announcements reviewed. The claim that V has an “official replacement” is therefore unverified. The publisher has shared broad information about the project and its development, not the identity of its lead character.
CD PROJEKT RED described Project Orion as a follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077 in February 2024, saying it was in early development at the company’s North American studio. In a May 28, 2025 update, CD PROJEKT said development had completed the conceptual phase and moved into preproduction, and referred to the game as Cyberpunk 2, formerly Project Orion.
The publisher’s June 2024 description characterized the next mainline game as a story-rich, morally ambiguous experience in the same dark-future world, with Unreal Engine 5 visuals. It did not name a protagonist. No official material reviewed confirms whether V, Johnny Silverhand, or another character will appear.

What do fans want: V or a new main character?
Individual Reddit discussions illustrate both preferences. Some commenters favor a new playable lead, while others discuss whether V could return. Those threads show that opinions differ, but they cannot establish how fans overall feel or whether one position is more popular.
There is a story-design tradeoff either way. Bringing V back could create a direct connection to the original game and its customized protagonist. A new lead could give the sequel a fresh viewpoint and avoid making every new player account for the first game’s outcomes. These are possibilities, not confirmed plans.

Cyberpunk 2077 has multiple endings, which makes speculation about a direct continuation complicated. That does not prove V cannot return; no official announcement reviewed here settles how the sequel will handle those outcomes.
Does Keanu Reeves’s Johnny Silverhand comment confirm a return?
No. PC Gamer reported that Reeves said, “Absolutely, I’d love to play Johnny Silverhand again.” That is a statement of his willingness to reprise the role, not confirmation that he has been cast in Cyberpunk 2. It also does not establish that Johnny—or V—will be the sequel’s protagonist.

What is confirmed about Cyberpunk 2?
- It is the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED announced Project Orion as the sequel project in February 2024.
- Its current name is Cyberpunk 2. The publisher used that name in its May 28, 2025 update and identified Project Orion as the former codename.
- Its latest dated development stage in the announcements reviewed is preproduction. CD PROJEKT said it had moved there after completing the conceptual phase in May 2025.
- The protagonist remains unannounced. The official materials reviewed do not say whether the game will follow V, introduce a new lead, or feature other familiar characters.
Do sales or awards show which protagonist fans prefer?
No. CD PROJEKT RED reported that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 25 million copies and received over 200 awards in its June 2024 press material. In May 2025, CD PROJEKT reported over 10 million copies sold for Phantom Liberty. Those figures describe sales and awards, not fan preference about the sequel’s protagonist. No representative statistic measuring support for V versus a new lead appears in the sources reviewed.
