To switch prerecorded videos automatically during a 24/7 YouTube broadcast, use a playout system that schedules or loops the files and an encoder that sends one continuous feed to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the feed; its auto-start and auto-stop settings do not, by themselves, choose or transition between video files.
How automatic video switching works
Think of the setup as two linked jobs: playout decides what video appears next, while an encoder delivers the resulting continuous audio-and-video feed to YouTube. Playout can run locally in software or a dedicated system, or in a hosted service. The encoder may be software or standalone hardware. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the ingest side, not a universal playlist-switching workflow.
Choose where the playlist runs

YouTube lists AWS Elemental MediaLive in its encoder directory for broadcast-grade live video processing. That description alone does not establish it as the right playlist-switching system; investigate it against your production requirements.
Set up the YouTube connection
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before a scheduled launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Configure your playout system. Add the prerecorded videos and set the playlist, schedule, or loop in the software or service you chose. The exact controls vary by product; the YouTube help pages do not document a universal sequence for switching local files.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s address and password in its encoder instructions and stream settings guidance.
- Send a test feed. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream. Confirm that the expected video and audio arrive and that the stream is visible from the channel and watch page.
- Run the service continuously. Keep the playout system and encoder running for a local setup, and check that the playlist advances as intended. If using backup encoding, test failover rather than assuming it works.
Test switching, access, and recovery
- Watch at least one transition in the Live Control Room preview. Check for a black frame, silence, abrupt audio changes, or an unexpected pause.
- Open the stream from the public channel and watch page, including on a mobile device, to confirm viewers can reach it and playback behaves as expected.
- Monitor stream quality while the broadcast is running. YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance covers stream setup and quality checks.
- If you use a backup encoder, deliberately test the handoff and verify that the live event recovers as expected.
- For local playout, test what happens after a computer restart, application crash, or network interruption. For a hosted service, check its own documentation for recovery behavior; a directory listing is not a guarantee of a particular recovery feature.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings govern starting or stopping an encoder stream; they do not describe automatic selection or transitions between video files. See YouTube’s stream settings documentation.

Plan for archives separately
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a complete 24/7 broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Copyright and channel considerations
Automating playback does not grant permission to use the videos, music, or other material in a stream. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current policies and the rights attached to each item before building a continuous playlist. A continuously available stream also needs active operational checks: confirm that the playlist advances, viewers can watch, and your archive plan is working rather than treating automation as a substitute for oversight.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream starts, but the video never changes. YouTube is receiving the encoder feed; confirm that the playout application or hosted service has a playlist or schedule configured and that its switching feature is enabled. YouTube’s auto-start setting is not a file scheduler.
- YouTube receives no feed. Recheck the stream URL and stream key in the encoder, ensure the encoder is running, and inspect Live Control Room for the incoming preview. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may still be pending.
- A transition causes a blank picture or missing audio. Review the files and transition settings in the chosen playout system, then observe another transition in the preview. The exact controls depend on that product.
- The stream stops during an outage. Identify whether the interruption came from the local computer, encoder, internet connection, or hosted service. Test restart or failover procedures for the component that failed; do not assume YouTube’s auto-start/stop settings switch files or provide playout recovery.
- The live broadcast has no complete archive. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep a separate recording if you need a complete copy.
