Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can turn archived podcast videos into a YouTube live stream by playing the files through an encoder such as OBS Studio and sending that feed to a YouTube event. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, add the stream URL and key to OBS, start the encoder, check the preview, then select Go live. The archive files supply the video; the encoder creates the live feed.
Choose the right format for your archive
Decide whether you want to broadcast one episode as a scheduled event or play a sequence of episodes from a playlist. A scheduled event gives an episode its own watch page and promotion opportunity. A playlist is more suitable for repeating a sequence, but it depends on the encoder computer and media files staying available.
| Approach | Best fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| One video per scheduled event | A curated episode broadcast with its own title and promotion | Create or schedule each event separately. YouTube’s archive guidance favors keeping a stream under 12 hours if you want an automatic on-platform replay. |
| Playlist in an encoder | A sequence of episodes or continuous programming from local files | The encoder machine and files must remain available. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and looping; VLC must be installed. |
| API-managed broadcast and stream | Developers automating recurring events or managing broadcast resources | This requires more technical setup: create and bind broadcast and stream resources, then manage their statuses. |
YouTube distinguishes the broadcast event from the stream carrying its audio and video. A reusable stream can support recurring events; YouTube also documents a 24/7 feed scenario for API users. Most creators do not need the API for the workflow below.
Check your files and rebroadcast rights
Gather the finished podcast videos and check that you have permission to rebroadcast every element in them, including music, clips, guest contributions, and other licensed material. An earlier YouTube upload does not by itself establish permission for a new live use. YouTube provides rights-management controls for live content and advises creators to ensure audio and video do not infringe others’ rights. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and the terms that apply to each episode before broadcasting.

Set up the archive playback in OBS
For one episode
- Open OBS Studio and create or select the scene for your stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source.
- Name the source, select the video file, and confirm the source settings. Check the scene preview to make sure the picture is framed as you intend.
For a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source.
- In OBS, select Sources → + → VLC Video.
- Add the video files in the intended episode order. Enable looping if you want the playlist to repeat, and use shuffle only if the episode order should vary.
- Check the preview and audio before connecting to YouTube. OBS documents playlist controls, but that does not guarantee gapless transitions or unattended operation.
See the OBS media sources guide for the source options. Match output settings to your files, computer, connection, and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. There is no single bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or hardware specification established for every archive and setup, so avoid choosing a profile by guesswork.
Create the YouTube event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab for a straightforward event, or open Manage → Schedule Stream to set a future start.
- Add a clear title and description, choose visibility, and add a thumbnail when appropriate. A scheduled stream can appear as an upcoming event, and viewers may request a start notification. See YouTube’s scheduling guidance.
- In the event’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share or publish it. YouTube’s encoder setup steps explain the connection.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then check the picture, audio, episode order, and first transition in the preview.
- When the preview is right, select Go live in YouTube Studio. Starting the encoder sends the feed; the Studio action starts the event for viewers.
Plan the event length and keep a backup
YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete on-platform replay, plan an event shorter than 12 hours and keep a separate local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends recording a local archive, but does not specify a drive type, capacity, or brand. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Confirm OBS is using the server URL and stream key shown for the correct event. Check that the key was copied accurately and has not been exposed or replaced.
- The stream reaches YouTube but is not live for viewers: Check the Live Control Room preview and select Go live in Studio after it appears.
- The playlist source is unavailable: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and add the VLC Video source.
- Episodes play in the wrong order or do not repeat: Review the file order and loop setting in the VLC Video source before starting the event.
- A replay is missing or incomplete: Check the event duration. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured, so use a local recording as a recovery copy.
- Rights concerns interrupt a broadcast: Recheck licenses for every music track, clip, and guest contribution, and review YouTube’s live-content rights controls before trying again.
