You can schedule a YouTube livestream in YouTube Studio and enable auto-start and auto-stop so YouTube responds when your encoder starts or stops sending the feed. Scheduling alone does not switch on the encoder or start and end the broadcast at set times: you must arrange those actions separately.
What YouTube can automate—and what it cannot
A scheduled event creates an upcoming livestream page that viewers can find and use to set reminders. Your encoder sends the live video and audio to YouTube. With auto-start and auto-stop enabled, YouTube lets you start or stop the stream from the encoder; the settings do not, by themselves, start or stop the encoder on a clock-based schedule.
So an automatically timed broadcast needs two parts: a scheduled YouTube event and an encoder or other control system configured to begin sending the feed at the start time and stop sending it at the end time. The YouTube guidance cited here describes encoder-controlled start and stop, not a timer that operates the encoder when an event is scheduled.
Check that your channel can livestream
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s stated minimum age for livestreaming is 16.
Confirm eligibility and current account status in YouTube Studio before relying on a scheduled event.

Schedule the event and enable encoder controls
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Schedule the stream. Open Manage, choose Schedule stream, then create a new event or reuse settings from a previous stream. Reusing settings also carries over the previous auto-start and auto-stop selections, so check them rather than assuming they are off.
- Set the stream options. In the stream settings, turn on auto-start and auto-stop if you want the encoder to control when YouTube starts and stops the stream.
- Configure the encoder. Use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The stream key is the credential that allows the encoder to send the feed to YouTube; keep it private and enter it only in the encoder or service you intend to use.
- Set the encoder’s timetable separately. Configure the encoder or another control system to start sending the feed at the event’s planned start time and stop sending it when the broadcast should end. Scheduling the YouTube event does not perform this step.
- Check the event and preview. Confirm the scheduled time and settings in Live Control Room, then verify that the expected video and audio appear in the preview when the encoder connects.
Prepare and monitor the broadcast
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder livestream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to begin. Use that lead time to confirm the encoder connects, check the preview, and resolve problems before viewers arrive.
- Watch the stream health indicators in Live Control Room.
- Check that both video and audio are present and behaving as expected.
- Keep an eye on the broadcast while it is live. A scheduled start does not remove the need to monitor the feed.
End the stream and protect the recording
At the planned end, stop the encoder feed and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup; do not rely on an archive for a broadcast longer than 12 hours.

Choose a method that can actually run on a timetable
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as ways to livestream, but the auto-start and auto-stop guidance specifically describes starting or stopping from an encoder. The documentation reviewed does not establish that the same timetable behavior is available for every streaming method. For any setup, check whether it can send a feed to the scheduled event, start and stop at the times you need, and let you inspect preview and stream health. If keeping a local copy matters, confirm that your setup can record one.
Common scheduling and automation problems
The event is scheduled, but no broadcast begins
Scheduling creates the event page; it does not turn on the encoder. Check that the encoder or control system is configured to start sending the feed, and that it has the correct stream URL and key.

The encoder connects, but YouTube does not start or stop as expected
Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in YouTube Studio. If you reused settings from a previous stream, verify the selections carried over. These controls let YouTube respond to the encoder; they do not supply the encoder’s timetable.
The preview or stream health is not right
Use the time before the event to confirm the encoder connection, preview, audio, video, and stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event and setting it up at least two hours in advance.

The livestream is missing from the archive
Check its duration. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Make a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
