How to Run Separate 24/7 YouTube Streams from One VPS with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run one independently configured FFmpeg process for each distinct program, and give each output the YouTube ingest details for that program. Keep the processes supervised and monitored: FFmpeg reconnect options can help with temporary failures, but they do not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. The VPS must also sustain the combined encoding workload and outbound traffic; there is no universal VPS size that fits every stream count and profile.

How separate YouTube streams fit together

A YouTube live broadcast is the event viewers watch; a live stream is the incoming feed and its delivery configuration. YouTube’s documentation puts it plainly: “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens. Each broadcast is a distinct YouTube video.” YouTube Live Streaming API overview

For separate programs—such as different game feeds or playlists—configure an appropriate feed for each program, then send each FFmpeg job to its matching ingest endpoint and stream name. A stream can be associated with multiple broadcasts when the same content is intentionally shared, but that is different from running different content on simultaneous channels. YouTube liveStreams resource

  • One program, one job: keep its media source, explicit audio/video selection, output settings, and ingest configuration together.
  • Independent processes: separate jobs have their own logs and can be restarted or changed without reconfiguring an unrelated program.
  • One VPS, shared failure domain: the jobs share the host’s CPU, network, and availability. A host outage can affect every program on it.

Prepare the YouTube ingest for each program

  1. In YouTube Studio or through the Live Streaming API, create/configure the broadcast viewers will watch and the live stream that will receive the encoder feed. They are separate YouTube resources; creating a broadcast alone does not necessarily create the encoder connection.
  2. For each incoming feed, obtain its ingest address and stream name from YouTube’s encoder setup or API response. Match those details to the intended program’s FFmpeg job.
  3. Choose a supported ingest protocol and encoder profile. YouTube documents RTMPS as RTMP protected by SSL, using port 443. Protect the stream name/key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that ingest.
  4. Check the broadcast preview and stream-health report before scheduling or leaving the feed unattended.

YouTube’s encoder guidance reports configuration problems including unsupported codecs, missing or excess audio/video streams, bitrate issues, long keyframe intervals, and mismatched primary and backup streams. It flags keyframe frequency above four seconds, so use a keyframe interval of four seconds or less and verify the actual output in YouTube’s health report. Follow YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one profile fits every feed. YouTube Live API encoder settings and health

Build one FFmpeg command per stream

FFmpeg can read multiple inputs and write multiple outputs, but options generally apply to the next input or output. For distinct programs, separate commands make the option scope and recovery path easier to inspect. Use explicit mapping so each job sends the intended audio and video streams, not whichever streams FFmpeg happens to select by default. Consult the documentation for the FFmpeg version and build installed on your VPS: the online manual tracks the newest revision. FFmpeg documentation

Use this as a command shape, not a copy-ready command: substitute the local input, desired mapping and encoding settings, and the ingest address and secret stream name supplied for that particular YouTube feed.

ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/program-a.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0

  -f flv "rtmps://[ingest-address]/[stream-name]"

Repeat with a separate command, input, settings, and matching YouTube ingest details for each distinct program. The bracketed encoding section is deliberately not a fixed profile: choose codecs, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate according to YouTube’s current recommendations and the source media. If the media is already compatible and you stream-copy it instead of re-encoding, that changes CPU demand; confirm that the copied codecs and stream layout are acceptable for the destination.

For a single identical feed sent to multiple destinations, FFmpeg’s multiple-output model may fit better than separate program jobs. That is not the same as separate content. YouTube also documents associating one incoming stream with multiple broadcasts when the content is shared intentionally. FFmpeg documentation

Keep jobs running and recover from failures

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an output-recovery example using -attempt_recovery 1 and a one-second recovery wait for temporary RTMP output failures. Treat this as retry behavior, not an uptime guarantee; check the exact FIFO options and syntax against your installed FFmpeg version and build. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation

  • Run each command under a service manager or equivalent process supervisor so a crashed process can be restarted.
  • Keep separate logs per job and configure log rotation so continuous output does not fill the disk.
  • Alert on process exits, disk pressure, and loss of expected outbound traffic; check periodically that YouTube still reports each feed as active and healthy.
  • If media is stored locally, monitor available disk space and verify that input paths remain accessible.
  • Consider whether placing every program on one machine is an acceptable failure risk. Separate hosts can reduce shared-host failure impact, at the cost of operating more infrastructure.

Size and validate the VPS against the workload

No fixed CPU, RAM, or monthly transfer figure is established for this setup. Capacity depends on how many feeds run at once, their resolution and frame rate, whether FFmpeg stream-copies or decodes and re-encodes, encoder choice, and output bitrate. Check the VPS provider’s current sustained-CPU policy, outbound transfer limits, connectivity, region, and support terms before committing to a host.

Measure the real workload with the chosen media and settings. Check aggregate CPU and network use while every job is active, and leave headroom for variation rather than sizing from a single idle or partial run. Do not assume a provider permits sustained encoding or traffic merely because a machine can start the processes.

  1. Start every job and confirm that each YouTube preview shows the correct program.
  2. Review stream health for codec, audio/video stream count, bitrate, and keyframe warnings; verify primary and backup settings match if you use both.
  3. Restart one supervised process deliberately and confirm that it returns to the correct program and ingest.
  4. Observe the combined workload over a representative operating period and verify it remains within both your measured capacity and the provider’s permitted limits.

RTMPS or HLS?

Ingest choice What to know When it fits
RTMPS RTMP protected by SSL; YouTube documents port 443. A conventional FFmpeg live-ingest setup where this protocol is available for the configured stream.
HLS Segmented upload; YouTube says latency is usually higher than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingest. Its HLS guidance recommends media segments of one to four seconds and sets a five-second maximum. When HLS is deliberately selected and its segmented-delivery behavior suits the workflow—not as a default requirement for every FFmpeg setup.

Use the ingest type and endpoint YouTube exposes for the configured stream, and consult its HLS requirements if choosing HLS. YouTube HLS ingest guidance

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The wrong program appears: check that the process uses the intended input file, explicit -map selections, and the ingest details for the matching broadcast.
  • YouTube reports a codec or stream-count problem: inspect the actual output streams and encoding options; correct unsupported codecs or missing/excess audio and video streams.
  • Health reports bitrate or keyframe warnings: revisit the selected output profile against YouTube’s current recommendations and ensure keyframe frequency is four seconds or less.
  • Feed stops after a brief network interruption: verify the installed build’s FIFO recovery settings and that a supervisor restarts a terminated process. Confirm the ingest is healthy after recovery; retries alone do not ensure return to service.
  • Several feeds fail together or the VPS slows down: check host load, outbound connectivity, transfer policy, and provider limits. Multiple jobs compete for shared resources.
  • HLS latency is higher than expected: account for segment-based delivery; YouTube notes HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingest.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube stream without operating a VPS and FFmpeg processes, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and the computer at home does not have to stay on. One slot runs one always-on stream; every slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, and supports playlists.

There are no quality tiers: uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. Visit StreamNeo or start the free day.
