What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First check whether YouTube is jumping to a different podcast episode or the player is moving to another point in the same live stream. A changed title suggests a playlist or autoplay issue; an unchanged title with a changed playhead points to timeline, chapter, or live DVR behavior. Then check whether it happens to one viewer or to everyone.
Identify what “skipping” means
Note the stream title, the player’s progress bar, and what changes when the problem occurs. That distinction determines which checks are useful; the symptom alone does not establish a cause.
- The title changes: YouTube has moved to another video. Check the playlist or queue and autoplay controls. This is different from seeking within a live stream; YouTube’s guidance does not establish one universal fix for playlist skipping.
- The title stays the same, but the playhead jumps: You may be seeing a seek, a selected chapter, or a change in live playback position. Creators can add chapters, which viewers can select from the timeline or video description. YouTube explains chapters and seeking.
- The picture or sound pauses, then catches up or resumes: Treat it as a playback interruption and test the connection, quality setting, app, and device.
Write down whether the title changed, whether the playhead moved, when it happened, what device and app or browser you were using, and whether another viewer saw it too.
Check whether you are behind the live stream
If you paused or rewound, you may be watching from a point behind the live edge rather than the latest broadcast. With DVR enabled, YouTube says playback resumes from where you paused. You cannot seek to a time before the stream began, and rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; some devices and app versions have lower limits. Check the live/DVR timeline to see whether playback is still behind live. YouTube’s DVR guidance describes these limits.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fix playback problems on your device
- Try another connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if practical, then replay the stream. If the issue disappears on the other connection, the original network may be contributing. Network congestion can interrupt live programming even when a connection appears to be working normally. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.
- Lower playback quality. Select a lower video quality and see whether interruptions stop. This is a diagnostic check, not proof of a particular fault. Lower live latency can also mean more buffering; if you are watching YouTube Primetime Channels on a TV, YouTube describes the Default broadcast delay as best for minimizing interruptions. YouTube live stream settings.
- Refresh the YouTube app or device. Close and reopen the app, clear its cache, check for an app update, and restart the device. If possible, try another supported device and note whether the problem follows you or stays with the original setup. YouTube playback troubleshooting.
- Check your browser. Update it, close unnecessary tabs, clear cache and cookies, and test in an incognito window or with extensions disabled. If another browser or device plays the stream correctly, focus on the original browser setup. YouTube video error troubleshooting.
- Compare with another viewer. Ask someone on a different device and, if possible, a different network to watch at the same time. A problem limited to your device or connection calls for local checks; a shared problem across networks warrants the broadcaster’s stream checks below.
What the number of affected viewers can tell you
| Who sees the problem | What to check next |
|---|---|
| One viewer | That viewer’s device, app or browser, extensions, network, playback quality, and position on the live/DVR timeline. |
| Several viewers on the same network | Shared network capacity and congestion, as well as whether lowering playback quality changes the symptom. |
| Viewers on different networks | The broadcaster should inspect stream and encoder health, including Live Control Room metrics and outbound connectivity. |
This pattern narrows the investigation; it does not by itself prove the cause. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance separates viewer-side problems from checks broadcasters can make to their stream.
Checks for the person broadcasting
If multiple viewers on different networks report the same skips, inspect the broadcast rather than asking each viewer to keep changing settings.

- Review Live Control Room. Check the live stream’s error metrics for warnings or problems that coincide with the reported times.
- Inspect the encoder and local recording or archive. Confirm the encoder is current, review its preview or local archive, and check that the audio and video sources are routed as intended. If the local output also jumps or drops, investigate the encoder, sources, or computer load.
- Check CPU load and outbound upload connectivity. If the encoder output or archive looks unhealthy, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder. If local output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection and contact the ISP if needed.
- Prepare the next broadcast with headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate, using a reliable network, checking the preview, verifying the stream on the channel or watch page and on mobile, and monitoring audio and video. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions. YouTube’s streaming tips.
Report a persistent problem with useful details
If playback still skips, send feedback through YouTube’s playback troubleshooting flow. Include the stream title or URL, approximate time of each incident, whether the video title or only the player position changed, device model, app or browser version, connection type, and whether another viewer reproduced it. These details help distinguish a local playback issue from a problem shared by viewers. YouTube playback troubleshooting.
