To keep background music in both your YouTube gaming livestream and its replay, use music whose license covers livestreaming and archived video, capture it as a separate source in OBS, and include it in the main stream audio mix. YouTube can scan a live stream for third-party content and claim an archive after the stream ends, so test the setup and check the replay before relying on it.
1. Choose music that permits both the live stream and replay
The safest starting point is YouTube Studio’s Audio Library. YouTube says music downloaded from the library is copyright-safe on YouTube and will not be claimed through Content ID. Check the individual track’s terms: if it requires attribution, copy the credit shown in Studio and include it in your video description. YouTube’s Audio Library guidance explains how to find and use its music and sound effects.
For music from another library or a purchased track, read the actual license before using it. Confirm that it covers livestreaming and the resulting archived video, as well as monetization if relevant, your territory, the license term, and any attribution or proof-of-license requirements. A “free” label or a credit in the description does not establish permission. YouTube warns that even online music labeled “free” might still be flagged by Content ID. What about Creator Music?
Creator Music uses terms displayed for each track. As of October 3, 2026, YouTube’s FAQ describes availability for U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion beyond the U.S. pending, and says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. Do not assume a Creator Music video license covers a livestream or its replay; check current eligibility and track-specific terms in Studio. Read YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ.

What about a game soundtrack?
Game audio is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast just because it plays during gameplay. Check the current publisher policy and the game’s audio settings. Rights can vary by game, and the available platform guidance does not establish permission for any particular soundtrack.
2. Add the music to OBS as a separate audio source
A separate source lets you adjust the music independently from gameplay and voice. OBS’s per-application audio capture guide documents the feature for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. - Open your OBS scene. In the Sources panel, add an application-audio capture source if your Windows version and OBS setup support it, then select the music player. If you use a supported game or window source that captures its audio, you may be able to route that audio through the source instead.
- Prevent duplicate capture. If per-application capture is picking up the music player, disable the global Desktop Audio source if it would capture the same sound too. Capturing one application through both routes can cause duplicated audio or echo.
- Check the mixer. Play the game and music, then watch the OBS audio meters. Confirm the expected sources respond and that the music is not being captured twice. Lower the music source as needed so it sits behind game audio and voice rather than obscuring them.
3. Make sure the replay uses the same mix
Include music in the main stream mix if you want it heard in an ordinary YouTube replay. OBS supports multiple audio tracks for recordings, but typical video players play only one track at a time. If you intend to publish a recording without editing it, OBS advises assigning all relevant sources to track 1. A music-only extra track might not play in the final video as you expect. OBS’s multiple audio track guide explains the distinction.
Separate tracks can be useful when you plan to edit the recording, but they are not a substitute for checking the live stream’s main audio mix. Choose the track arrangement for the output you actually plan to publish.

4. Test the stream and inspect its replay
- Start a short test stream and check that gameplay, voice, and music are all audible.
- Listen for duplicate music, echo, or a level that makes speech and game audio hard to hear. If possible, monitor playback on a separate device as well.
- After the test ends and the archive is available, play the replay and confirm it contains the intended mix. A correct-looking OBS mixer alone does not confirm what viewers will hear in the archive.
5. Know what can happen with copyright claims
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may interrupt or terminate a stream when it identifies such content, and an archived live video can receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. These are distinct risks: a stream that finishes normally can still have an archive claim. For third-party licensed music, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID; having a license alone may not prevent a live interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Keep records of third-party licenses and follow their attribution requirements. Permission does not necessarily prevent automated detection, while a Content ID claim does not by itself establish what rights your license grants. Resolve the claim using the relevant license and YouTube’s available procedures rather than assuming that a description credit is enough.

If YouTube claims the replay
YouTube Studio may offer options to trim the claimed segment, replace claimed music with Audio Library tracks, or mute the claimed song or all audio in the affected segment. Since June 2025, edits saved in Studio cannot be reverted. Preview carefully before saving, and keep an original local recording if you need an independent copy. See YouTube’s instructions for removing claimed content.
Troubleshooting
- Music is absent from the live stream: Check that OBS is capturing the correct player or source, that its meter responds during playback, and that the source is included in the main stream mix.
- Music is doubled or has an echo: Check whether both Application Audio Capture and Desktop Audio are capturing the same application. Disable the redundant route.
- Music plays live but is missing from the replay: Check the main stream mix and audio-track assignment. If the recording will be published without editing, assign all required sources to track 1.
- The replay is claimed even though you bought or licensed the track: Review the license’s livestream, archive, monetization, territory, and term provisions, then contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel through Content ID. A license may not prevent interruption or automated claims.
- A Studio edit removes more than intended: Do not save until you have previewed the change. Saved Studio edits cannot be reverted under YouTube’s guidance since June 2025; retain a local original if you need a separate copy.
