You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Mac mini by keeping an encoder such as OBS Studio running on the computer, connected to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream URL and key. For prerecorded 24/7 playback, the Mac must stay powered, connected and running the encoder; a cloud service is an alternative when you do not want a computer at home to handle the stream.
Choose the right setup for your stream
A Mac mini hosts the encoder; it does not send a YouTube stream by itself. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS Studio is one open-source software option listed in YouTube’s encoder directory, and OBS provides macOS installation guidance.

Check channel eligibility before setup
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days.
- First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before the planned start.
- Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A live encoder does not grant permission to use copyrighted music, gameplay footage or other material.
- If you plan to monetize, assess YouTube’s current reused-content and monetization policies separately; eligibility to go live does not guarantee monetization.

Install OBS on macOS
- Download OBS Studio for macOS from the OBS Mac installation page.
- Open the downloaded disk image and drag OBS into the Applications folder as directed by OBS.
- Open OBS and grant any macOS permissions required for the sources you intend to capture, such as screen or microphone access.
- Check OBS’s current macOS compatibility and version information at installation time. The cited OBS installation page is dated 2021-05-29, so its steps should not be treated as confirmation of current version compatibility.
No specific Mac mini generation or configuration is established as a requirement. If you already own a suitable Mac, you do not need to buy another computer just to try the workflow. A camera or microphone is optional input hardware, not a prerequisite for prerecorded playback.
Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Set the stream title, visibility/privacy and other event settings. Use the current Studio prompts for whether the event is scheduled or started immediately.
- Copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding service fields in OBS. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then verify the picture and sound before starting or confirming the public event as Studio prompts.
- Open the published watch page on another device to confirm viewers can see and hear the stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported by the encoder. If you believe your key has been exposed, use YouTube Studio’s stream settings to reset it, then replace the old key in OBS. Current interface wording can change; consult YouTube’s live stream settings help for stream configuration and key management.

Set encoder output and test the feed
Use YouTube’s current recommendations as starting points, not as a promise that a particular internet connection or Mac can sustain the stream. The following encoder values are from YouTube Help’s settings guidance accessed in 2026.

Choose a resolution and frame rate that your upload connection can sustain, including overhead and other devices using the network. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of continuous capacity. If the connection is constrained, lower the output resolution or frame rate, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators while sending representative content.

- Test audio and moving video, not just a static screen; check for clipping, silence, dropped frames and visible artifacts.
- Make the test resemble the intended stream’s actual scene complexity, audio and duration.
- If using a local recording, play it back and verify it separately; a healthy YouTube preview does not prove that a local recording is usable.
- For unattended operation, test how the setup behaves after an encoder closure, Mac restart and network interruption. These are prudent operational checks, not guarantees that the Mac or YouTube will recover automatically.

Plan for long-running playback and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete video: the cited guidance does not establish a complete archive outcome for streams over 12 hours or a universal Mac mini method for rotating segments. If you need an archive, test retention and recording separately before relying on it.

A continuous local stream also depends on more than the computer: power, internet service, macOS, the encoder and the YouTube connection all matter. The available platform guidance does not establish a Mac mini-specific maximum duration or reliable uptime. Plan for what you will do after a power loss, software update, network outage or lost stream, and test that recovery plan.
