If a YouTube gaming rerun ends when its playlist reaches the last video, make the source feeding your live encoder repeat. A YouTube player’s loop setting does not keep a creator’s live feed going. If you want to avoid leaving a local computer and connection running, a hosted playlist-to-live service is another option—but confirm how it handles the end of a playlist before relying on it.
Why the stream stops when the playlist ends
A live broadcast needs a continuing video feed from its source. In a typical gaming rerun setup, media plays in broadcasting software and an encoder sends that feed to YouTube. When the source playlist ends, the encoder may stop receiving video; YouTube’s player cannot refill that source. YouTube’s encoder guide explains that to end a stream, you stop sending content from the encoder. It does not document automatic restarting of an exhausted playlist. Player loop and source loop are different
YouTube’s embedded-player documentation describes looping a video in a player with loop=1 and the playlist parameter set to that video’s ID. That controls playback in the embedded player; it is not a setting for a creator’s encoder or media playlist. YouTube IFrame Player API: Player parameters.
For a live rerun, configure repeat at the source that supplies video to your encoder, or use a hosted playlist-streaming workflow. The exact control depends on the software or service you use.

Make a local gaming rerun playlist repeat
- Check the playlist and permissions. Make sure the intended recordings are available to your source software and that you have the necessary rights to broadcast both their video and audio. YouTube specifically cautions creators to ensure trailer audio and video do not infringe others’ content. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enable repeat in your media source or playlist. In your broadcasting software, find the repeat or loop option for the media source or playlist. The cited YouTube guidance explains the encoder connection, not how to configure third-party media sources. Check the current documentation for your software to find its exact controls.
- Test the final item. Observe what happens when the playlist reaches its end. Confirm that playback returns to the first item and that the encoder continues sending video. If playback stops, inspect the source’s repeat setting and whether it applies to the entire playlist rather than only the current video.
- Connect the encoder in YouTube Studio. Create or reuse a live stream, then use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio to connect the encoder. YouTube’s stream settings explain that the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send content to your stream. YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings.
- Review stream lifecycle controls separately. Check the auto-start and auto-stop settings in the stream settings. These govern stream start and stop behavior; they do not restart an empty source playlist or make it repeat.
- Run an end-to-end test before scheduling. Let the playlist reach its last item while monitoring both the source and YouTube’s live preview. Verify that the source loops and the incoming feed continues before depending on it for a long rerun.
What YouTube’s stream settings do—and do not do
YouTube supports webcam, mobile, and encoder streaming, and its encoder instructions include broadcasting gameplay. The encoder workflow uses a YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Auto-start and auto-stop are separate lifecycle controls; neither supplies replacement media when the playlist ends. If the encoder stops sending content, the stream’s source feed has stopped.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. That is archive guidance, not a promise that a stream will restart or that an exhausted playlist will continue. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot a rerun that still stops
- Playback stops at the last video: The source playlist may not be set to repeat, or repeat may be enabled only for a single item. Check the source software’s current documentation and test the full playlist.
- The source loops, but YouTube stops receiving video: Check that the encoder is still connected and sending content, and that the source remains active after the transition. YouTube’s stream key and URL connect the encoder; they do not control playlist repeat.
- You enabled loop in an embedded player: That setting governs player playback, not the feed sent by your encoder. Enable repeat in the source workflow instead.
- The stream starts or stops unexpectedly: Review YouTube Studio’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Treat those as lifecycle controls, separate from the media source’s repeat setting.
- A hosted playlist ends instead of repeating: Check the provider’s current documentation and terms for end-of-playlist behavior. Do not assume that playlist streaming means automatic looping.
- You plan a long unattended broadcast: Test the entire end-of-playlist transition before scheduling it. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance for streams under 12 hours does not imply automatic restart.
