To play children’s videos in a random order in OBS, add them to a VLC Video source and turn on Shuffle Playlist. VLC must be installed first, and if you want the playlist to stop after one pass, turn off Loop Playlist, which is on by default.
Set up a shuffled playlist in OBS
- Install VLC Media Player. OBS’s Media Sources guide says VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. Match the bitness: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Open the scene where you want the videos to appear. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. See OBS’s Sources Guide for the source-adding workflow.
- Add your video files. Open the VLC Video source properties and add the local files to its playlist. VLC Video supports multiple media files; the regular Media Source is intended for a single media file.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist. OBS describes this setting as randomizing media files instead of keeping the order of the file list. Its documented default is off.
- Choose whether to repeat. Loop Playlist is on by default and restarts the source after it runs out of media files. Leave it on for continued playback, or turn it off for one pass.
- Check Visibility Behaviour if the source may be hidden or its scene may change. The setting controls what playback does while the source is not visible.
OBS’s official documentation establishes that shuffle randomizes the playlist, but does not promise a particular randomization algorithm or that each video will trigger a fresh shuffle. An OBS forum discussion describes files playing once each in shuffled order before repeating; treat that as community guidance, not a guarantee for every current OBS version. OBS’s source implementation includes shuffle logic, but implementation details can change with versions.
If VLC Video is missing
- Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s bitness; in particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- If you installed VLC while OBS was open and the source still does not appear, restart OBS and check the Sources dock again. Restarting is a troubleshooting step, not a documented requirement.
Optional alternative: a playlist plugin
The community-listed Media Playlist Source plugin advertises playlist editing without restarting video, selecting a file or folder item, saving the current file for playback on OBS restart, and shuffling. Its listing specifies OBS Studio 30.0.0 as the minimum version and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Those are listing claims, not a guarantee of compatibility with your current OBS installation; verify compatibility and only install plugins from sources you trust. For a straightforward shuffled playlist, begin with OBS’s built-in VLC Video source.
