Keep sermon audio consistent by setting gain from the microphone outward, balancing speech and music in a dedicated stream mix, and checking the actual OBS output—not just the room sound. Use gentle compression for ordinary level changes and a limiter for brief peaks, then test a representative service and monitor the live feed. There is no established YouTube live LUFS target that every church should aim for.
Build a reliable audio path to the stream
If your console allows it, send a dedicated mix or matrix output to the streaming computer. A room microphone pointed at the sanctuary captures the room, not necessarily a mix that makes sense online. The right routing depends on your mixer and software; it is a production choice, not a YouTube requirement.
Before changing levels in OBS, confirm that the signal is clean at the console output and audio interface. OBS’s input indicator can help identify whether the signal entering the interface is too loud. Monitor again when the signal reaches OBS, as recommended in the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
Set gain from the source outward
- Check the microphone and preamp. Have the preacher speak at both their normal level and their strongest expected level. Adjust the microphone position and input gain so the loudest passages remain clean.
- Check each downstream stage. Follow the signal through the console output, interface input, operating-system audio path if used, and OBS source. Watch and listen at each point.
- Correct overload where it starts. If the microphone preamp or another upstream stage clips, lowering the OBS fader will not remove distortion already recorded into the signal.
- Record a normal session and listen back. OBS recommends testing with a recording before going live; playback can reveal problems that are hard to notice while operating the mix.
OBS documents a meter alignment level of -20 dBFS, described as near the average level for speech, and a permitted maximum of -9 dBFS to allow headroom for peak-meter behavior. These are OBS meter conventions, not instructions that every sermon must average -20 dBFS or peak at -9 dBFS. The figures and their purpose are explained in OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Read meters without mistaking them for loudness
dBFS is a digital scale whose maximum representable level is 0 dBFS; levels are shown below it as negative values. A signal exceeding 0 dBFS in the final stream can clip and distort. OBS’s main meter shows peak program level, while a separate RMS-style indicator gives a more loudness-like reading. OBS notes that its meter has limitations as a loudness meter, so use it to spot peaks and overload—not as a complete judgment of perceived loudness.
Listen as well as watch the meter. A voice and a musical passage can appear similar on a peak meter yet seem very different in loudness to viewers. If you need a measured loudness value for a defined production standard, use a meter suited to that measurement and state the standard as your own engineering goal. EBU R 128 Supplement 2, version 3 (21 November 2023), discusses loudness leveling for streaming, while AES TD1008 addresses internet streaming and on-demand distribution; neither establishes a fixed YouTube live-sermon target. Avoid claiming that YouTube requires -14 LUFS for live streams. See the EBU publication and AES recommendations.

Balance preaching, worship music, and transitions
Mix for clear, intelligible speech at an ordinary listening volume, then keep music and transitions from suddenly overtaking it. Set repeatable fader positions and write them down for volunteers. Check each microphone and service segment separately when different speakers, operators, or positions are involved. A processor cannot make a distant, quiet microphone equivalent to a well-positioned, properly gained one without audible side effects.
Judge the mix through headphones on the stream path, not only from the sanctuary or console monitor. YouTube also notes that viewer-side features such as Stable volume and Voice boost may affect perceived playback for some viewers, but they are not a substitute for a balanced source mix. Details are on YouTube’s video and audio quality enhancements page.

Use compression and limiting for different jobs
Compression for routine variation
A compressor can reduce ordinary differences between softer and louder speech. Use it gently: excessive compression can flatten natural emphasis, make room noise more prominent, or cause pumping. Listen to quiet passages and strong preaching after adjusting it.
Limiting for brief peaks
A limiter is peak protection, not a replacement for good gain staging or mix balance. OBS describes its Limiter filter as a compressor with a fast attack and high ratio, and says it should be the last filter in the chain. OBS lists -6 dB as the filter’s default threshold; that is a software default, not a universal output ceiling or recommended sermon loudness. Tune against your actual signal and listening tests. See the OBS Limiter Filter documentation.

Test the complete service before going live
- Run an unlisted or otherwise suitable test using the actual microphones, music, room, operators, encoder, and internet connection.
- Include quiet speech, the preacher’s strongest delivery, music, and transitions. A test should resemble the audio and movement of the real stream.
- Listen on headphones at the source and through OBS monitoring. Record the test and check playback on a phone speaker, headphones, and a television or other typical device if available.
- Check YouTube’s stream health during the test and correct audio problems before the service. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and live streaming tips cover stream setup and monitoring.
Monitor a nonstop stream and protect the archive
Assign someone to watch the outgoing mix and stream-health indicators during transmission. Keep a local recording and confirm that its file is growing and remains usable. Document device selection, gain positions, filter order, and settings, then use a short preflight checklist so a volunteer change or restart does not silently alter the mix. YouTube recommends continuous audio/video monitoring and checking local archive integrity in its live streaming tips.
Do not assume YouTube will preserve an all-day broadcast as one archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an on-demand archive matters, split the broadcast into appropriate sessions or rely on a verified local recording and editing workflow. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot uneven sermon audio
| What you hear or see | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Pastor sounds quiet online although the room sounds fine | The stream mix may not be receiving the console’s room mix, or the microphone is distant or under-gained. | Check the dedicated stream output and follow the signal from microphone through console and interface into OBS. Adjust the source or mix at the point causing the low level. |
| Harsh distortion on emphatic words | An upstream input or stage may be clipping before the OBS fader. | Watch and listen at the microphone preamp, console output, and interface input; reduce gain at the stage that overloads. |
| Worship music masks speech | The stream balance may favor music, or speech and music may have similar meter peaks but different perceived loudness. | Adjust the stream mix by listening to both sources at normal playback volume. Do not rely on matching peak-meter readings. |
| Volume surges between speakers or service segments | Microphone distance, input gain, or fader positions may differ. | Check each microphone and segment individually, establish repeatable positions, and document them. Use compression only for residual routine variation. |
| Limiter is working constantly or the mix sounds flattened | The input may be too hot, the mix may be unbalanced, or limiting may be doing more than catching occasional peaks. | Correct gain and balance upstream, then reassess the limiter threshold and listen for pumping or lost vocal emphasis. |
| There is no complete YouTube archive after an all-day stream | The broadcast exceeded 12 hours; YouTube says streams longer than that may not be captured. | Use separate sessions or verify a local recording intended for the archive. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded sermon recordings playing on YouTube continuously, StreamNeo can loop them from the cloud; it is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; your uploaded audio still needs to be mixed and checked before streaming. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one price per slot, with no re-encode, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start a free day.
