Keep the YouTube livestream title stable, and show the episode that is playing in an on-screen “Now Playing” overlay driven by your playout system’s current-item metadata. YouTube’s broadcast title describes the broadcast—one YouTube video—not a changing label for each file in a continuous stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation does not describe the title field as an automatic per-episode display.
Separate the channel’s live title from the episode name
Use the YouTube title and description to identify the overall stream—for example, that it is a continuous children’s story stream—and use an on-screen label to identify the current story. Changing the broadcast title is not a dependable way to show each episode as your playlist advances: the API describes the title as broadcast metadata, and each broadcast represents one YouTube video. YouTube Live Streaming API
A “Now Playing” overlay can display the current item’s title as the playlist rotates. The text depends on the title metadata in your media library; if that is missing, an overlay may show a filename instead. Playout.video documents this behavior for its overlay, but that description does not establish compatibility with every playout system or stream setup. Playout.video’s overlay guide
Set up an episode-name display
- Give each episode a clean, consistent title. Enter the name in the media library or playlist metadata that your playout system uses. Check that every item has a title viewers can understand; do not assume the overlay will turn a raw filename into a polished episode name.
- Choose a playout or overlay system that exposes the current item. Confirm it can read the metadata format your library uses and pass the changing title into the stream composition. The documented features of individual tools do not guarantee compatibility with your specific software, operating system, or stream destination.
- Add a compact title element to the stream scene. Preview it over representative story frames, including bright, detailed artwork. Check the longest episode name for wrapping, clipping, or truncation, and adjust the text size, width, contrast, or background bar as needed. The overlay guide recommends checking contrast and long-title fit.
- Choose when the label appears. A persistent title helps late-arriving viewers identify the story in progress. A title shown only at transitions covers less of the artwork for less time. Playout.video documents both always-visible and transition-only display behavior; the choice depends on whether constant identification or less visual obstruction matters more for your stream.
- Test a complete episode change in the output. Preview the actual stream output—not just the editor canvas—and confirm the label changes to the correct next episode. Check for stale titles, delay, or a mismatch between the playlist item and displayed text.
Choose a workflow that fits your setup
| Approach | What is documented | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stable YouTube broadcast title | YouTube provides title and description fields for broadcast metadata; the API does not establish per-episode title changes within one continuous broadcast. Source | Use it to name the overall live event, not as the changing on-screen episode label. |
| Automated Now Playing overlay | Playout.video documents an overlay that displays the current video or track title, updates as content rotates, and can be styled for persistent or transition-only display. Source | Verify episode metadata, title legibility, how much of the picture is covered, transition behavior, and integration with your particular stream setup. |
| OBS 24/7 Playout workflow | The project repository describes continuous playlist or rundown playback and a Now/Next display with progress and upcoming-video information. It does not establish compatibility with every operating system or destination. Project repository | Check current maintenance, setup requirements, compatibility with your OBS environment, and whether its display can be placed in the stream where viewers need it. |
| Manually changing a graphic | No source here establishes a particular manual-graphic workflow as an automated solution. | Consider operator workload and the risk of leaving the previous episode name on screen after a transition. |
Keep captions separate from the episode label
An episode title identifies the story; it does not caption its spoken audio. YouTube documents live captions through caption data embedded in the video or delivered through supported software. Its guidance includes a one-caption-feed-per-stream-entry-point constraint, so check the current requirements for your specific caption workflow. YouTube live caption requirements

Set the audience designation accurately
YouTube’s Live Streaming API includes the selfDeclaredMadeForKids field for setting a broadcast’s child-directed designation and the madeForKids field to indicate that designation. The fields do not determine how a particular channel should classify its content. Use YouTube’s current audience settings and applicable guidance for your stories. YouTube Live Streaming API
Or let it run in the cloud
If the stream is a YouTube loop of uploaded story videos, StreamNeo can keep it running without a computer or home connection staying on. Upload the recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. For episode names, prepare accurate titles in your media library and use a compatible playout or overlay system; StreamNeo’s stated features do not include a Now Playing episode-title overlay.
