For unattended checks, YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health fields that a custom monitor can query—but the API fields alone do not provide an alert service.
Check a live stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the active stream in the Live section. Select it to open the Live Control Room. YouTube describes Studio as the place to manage current, upcoming, and past streams (YouTube Studio live streaming guidance).
- Look at stream health and status first. The Live Control Room shows stream status and can display specific errors with instructions. Check any message beside the health indicator and note its timestamp. YouTube’s error guidance distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow ones (YouTube live streaming error messages).
- Review audience signals separately. The dashboard’s real-time analytics include concurrent viewers, views, chat rate, and average view duration, among other metrics. These describe audience activity; they do not by themselves diagnose the encoder-to-YouTube feed. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide.
A healthy ingest signal does not prove that every viewer’s playback is smooth. If viewers report buffering while the health indicator looks good, treat that as a playback problem to investigate separately rather than assuming the dashboard has ruled it out.
What the monitoring signals tell you
Stream status and health
For automated monitoring, the YouTube Live Streaming API’s LiveStream resource documents status.streamStatus values including active, inactive, error, ready, and created. active means YouTube is receiving data; inactive means it is not. The resource also documents health status values good, ok, bad, and noData, along with the last health update time and configuration issues (YouTube LiveStreams API reference).
Do not interpret noData as healthy: it means YouTube’s live backend has no health information. If status is not active, health is bad, or configuration issues are listed, check the relevant error detail in Live Control Room and investigate the encoder or connection.

Audience performance
Concurrent viewers, views, likes, chat rate, average view duration, reactions, and reminders set help describe audience activity during a broadcast. They are not substitutes for stream health. After the live phase, YouTube Analytics provides reports such as watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Some live-stream analytics become available within minutes after a stream ends; a particular vertical-stream breakdown may take 24 hours (YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide).

The API reference establishes fields that an implementation can read; it does not by itself establish notification delivery, a guaranteed polling interval, or automatic text, email, or push alerts. Check current API documentation for authentication, quotas, and implementation requirements before building a monitor.

Understand “VOD stream” in this context
“VOD” usually refers to video on demand, while an always-on broadcast is monitored as a live stream for as long as it is active. Once it is archived or viewed on demand, use YouTube Analytics to examine its post-live performance. YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts API also documents a monitor stream for broadcaster review before a broadcast is shown publicly; that is a pre-broadcast review feature, not a remote alert mechanism for an already-running public stream (YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference).
Troubleshoot common monitoring findings
- The stream is inactive: YouTube is not receiving data. Check whether the encoder or streaming service is still sending the feed, and review Live Control Room for an error and its instructions.
- The status is error or health is bad: Read the specific dashboard message and listed configuration issues before changing settings. The error detail is more actionable than audience metrics.
- The health value is noData: YouTube has no health information to report. Treat it as unknown, not confirmation that the stream is healthy, and check the dashboard directly.
- Health looks good but viewers report playback trouble: Ingest health and viewer playback are different signals. Check audience reports and playback-related analytics rather than treating a healthy feed indicator as proof of smooth playback for everyone.
- Viewer numbers or chat activity look low: These are audience measures, not proof that the stream has stopped sending video. Confirm stream status independently.
