The broadcast and the playlist are separate: editing the playlist does not itself end the stream, but OBS does not promise that edits to its built-in VLC playlist will take effect seamlessly while it is playing. Test the exact setup before relying on it for a continuous stream.
What “without restarting” means
A YouTube encoder stream has two relevant parts: OBS sends the live output to YouTube using the configured stream URL and key, and a media source in an OBS scene supplies the bhajan video and audio. To add songs without restarting, keep OBS sending output and adjust the media source or its playlist. Do not stop the encoder or end the event in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to end a stream by clicking End Stream and stopping the encoder output (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
Changing a playlist is not the same as changing the YouTube stream key or metadata. YouTube’s stream settings page covers settings such as metadata and resetting a key; it does not document a YouTube-side editor for the bhajan queue being played by OBS (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).
Set up a playlist in OBS before going live
Use VLC Video Source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS lists VLC as a requirement for its VLC Video Source.
- In OBS, select the scene that carries your live program. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video Source and add the bhajan video files to its playlist. OBS documents playlist playback and loop and shuffle settings for this source (OBS Project: Media Sources).
- Set the playlist behavior you want, such as looping when the list reaches its end. Check that the source is visible in the scene and that its audio is reaching the OBS mixer. OBS’s source guide explains how to add and arrange scene sources (OBS Project: Sources Guide).
- Test the playlist locally: play through track changes, confirm the intended order, and check both video and sound before using it for a valuable broadcast.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the encoder stream and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key as appropriate for your OBS version.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live there to begin the public broadcast, following YouTube’s encoder workflow (YouTube Help).
How to add bhajans while the stream is live
Safest approach: prepare and test the change
Keep OBS streaming and the YouTube event live. Add the new files to the VLC playlist or update the playlist according to the controls in your installed OBS/VLC setup. Watch the program output and Live Control Room preview to confirm the change has actually taken effect. Avoid ending the stream or stopping OBS output merely to change the queue.

Do not assume a live edit will preserve the current track, take effect immediately, or append new tracks in the order you expect. The official OBS documentation describes playlist support, but does not guarantee seamless edits to a playlist during playback. An OBS community discussion reports inconsistent results when adding media to a running stream; it is useful evidence of uncertainty, not a dependable procedure (OBS Project Forums: Adding media to running YouTube Live Stream).
If editing the active playlist is unreliable
One alternative is to prepare a separate scene or source with the updated playlist and switch to it while the encoder remains connected. Scene switching is a possible workaround, not a guarantee: test that the transition, audio, and playback work as intended in your exact setup before using it live. The community discussion suggests scene switching, but does not establish it as a universally reliable fix.

A third-party OBS resource called Media Playlist Source advertises editing a playlist without restarting video. Treat that as a plugin feature claim, not a promise that it will work with every OBS version, operating system, or current source configuration. Check its current version and compatibility against your setup, then test before depending on it (OBS Project Forums: Media Playlist Source).
Will the YouTube live link stay the same?
Changing the media playlist while you keep the same YouTube live event and encoder session running is not, by itself, an instruction to end that event. The sources establish that playlist handling occurs in OBS and that ending the broadcast is a separate action in Live Control Room and the encoder. They do not make a specific guarantee about how every channel’s URL or event behaves under every configuration, so verify the live page after making a change rather than assuming a playlist edit creates a new event.

YouTube Live Redirect is not a way to add tracks to the current program: it hands viewers off after a stream ends, rather than editing the queue of a stream that is still live (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).

Troubleshooting playlist changes
- The new bhajans do not appear. Confirm that you edited the playlist used by the source in the active scene, then check the output preview. A playlist edit is not guaranteed to be ingested during playback.
- The current song restarts or the transition is unexpected. The sources do not establish consistent current-item behavior for live edits. Test with a non-public or otherwise low-stakes run; consider preparing a separate source or scene and testing a switch.
- There is no video or audio. Confirm VLC is installed, the intended source is active and visible, and the source’s files remain available. Check OBS’s audio mixer and preview before concluding the change worked.
- The YouTube broadcast ends. Check whether OBS stopped sending output or whether End Stream was clicked in Live Control Room. Changing a playlist should not require either action; YouTube’s documented end workflow uses both.
- A plugin does not behave as described. Check its current listing and compatibility with your installed OBS and platform. A third-party feature claim is not a substitute for a test on the actual broadcast setup.
Keep the bhajan content and channel in good standing
Only stream recordings and arrangements you have the right to use. A live broadcast can still raise copyright issues if the music, recording, or video belongs to someone else; playlist management does not grant permission. Review YouTube’s current rules and the rights attached to each track before adding it to a continuous public stream.
