You can broadcast prerecorded gaming VODs as a YouTube Live stream by putting the local video files in OBS Studio’s VLC Video source playlist, then sending the OBS output to a YouTube encoder event. Install VLC as well as OBS, keep the computer and internet connection running for the broadcast, and test playback before going live. What you need before setting up the playlist
- An eligible YouTube channel. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person live-streaming must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before the planned broadcast. YouTube live-stream requirements and YouTube encoder guide.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the same computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC; if using 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources.
- Your VOD files available locally. Check that each file includes the video and audio you intend to broadcast, and that the files remain accessible to OBS throughout the stream.
- Rights to everything in the broadcast. A previously uploaded VOD is not automatically cleared for a new live broadcast. YouTube places responsibility on the creator to have the rights needed for live content, including applicable music rights. YouTube livestream terms.
Set up a playlist in OBS with VLC
- Open OBS and select or create the scene you want to use for the broadcast.
- In the scene’s Sources box, choose + and add VLC Video. If that source option is missing, install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS; restart OBS after installation if needed.
- In the VLC Video source properties, add your local VOD files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Choose the playback behavior. OBS documents Loop as on by default and Shuffle as off by default. Keep loop enabled if you want playback to repeat after the last item; enable shuffle only if you want the order randomized. These are documented software defaults, not guarantees about performance.
- Confirm the source appears correctly in the OBS preview. Check framing and audio, and make sure any other scene elements you intend to broadcast are present.

Connect OBS to a YouTube Live encoder event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live event and choose the encoder workflow.
- Use the stream connection information shown in Live Control Room to connect OBS to the event. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not show it in a public scene, screenshot, or recording, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- In OBS, start streaming when you are ready to send the feed. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, verify that the incoming preview is the intended playlist and that the event is ready before starting the public broadcast.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection where available, and watch the stream-health status during the event. YouTube describes encoders as suitable for gameplay and overlays as well as other advanced production. See its encoder setup guide.
Test the broadcast before viewers arrive
Run a private or unlisted test event if appropriate for your channel and confirm that the stream works end to end. YouTube’s settings guidance recommends testing with representative video movement and audio, then monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder settings guidance.
- Watch the YouTube preview, not only the OBS preview, to confirm the signal reaches YouTube.
- Listen for game audio, commentary, and any other audio you intend to include; check that levels are sensible and not clipping.
- Let a playlist item finish and verify the next item starts. If looping is intended, test what happens at the end of the full playlist.
- Check that the broadcast uses the right scene and that no desktop notifications, private windows, or stream-key details are visible.
- Check stream health and correct problems before promoting or starting the public event.
The cited YouTube guidance does not support one bitrate or resolution as the right setting for every channel. Choose settings based on the quality you want, the computer encoding the feed, and the available upload connection; use YouTube’s current settings guidance rather than applying a universal number.

Keep the broadcast compliant
YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Its livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the rights needed to use the content on Google services, including music licensing rights where applicable, and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. That responsibility can apply to gameplay footage, game audio, background music, and other material inside a VOD. The rights status depends on the specific content and circumstances; this is not legal advice about any particular game or soundtrack. Review YouTube’s live-stream rules and livestream terms before broadcasting.

VLC Video is missing from OBS Sources
OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. Install VLC, matching 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS and check Sources again. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

The playlist plays only one file or does not repeat
Reopen the VLC Video source properties and confirm that all intended files are in its playlist. Check the Loop setting if playback should repeat, and verify Shuffle is off if you need a fixed order. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as the defaults, but source settings can be changed.
The YouTube preview is blank or has no sound
Confirm the VLC source is visible in the active OBS scene, the files are accessible, and the source’s audio is reaching the OBS output. Then check OBS’s stream connection and YouTube’s incoming preview. Test a representative video and listen to the result before going public.

YouTube does not receive the encoder signal
Confirm the correct event and stream connection information are being used, then review YouTube’s Live Control Room status and OBS’s streaming state. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours according to YouTube’s encoder guide. Use the current YouTube encoder setup instructions.
The stream stops when unattended
A local OBS setup depends on the computer and connection running the encoder. For a broadcast that must continue without a home computer left on, use the cloud workflow described above instead.
