Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and confirm YouTube identifies it as a current live broadcast. A 24/7 title, continuous animation, or a video that still plays is not enough: the channel may have left a replay available after the broadcast ended.

Open the specific stream on YouTube’s watch page, rather than relying on a link preview or an embedded player.

Look for YouTube’s current-live presentation on that page. The exact badge, text, or placement can vary by device, app, geography, and interface update, so do not rely on one specific icon or color.

If the page does not make the status clear, open YouTube’s Live section and check whether the same channel or broadcast appears among current streams. YouTube describes live streams as media broadcast in real time and offers its Live destination for browsing current and upcoming streams. YouTube Help: Watch live streams

Use chat and playback as clues, not proof
Live Chat on the watch page can support your check: viewers can interact while watching live. But chat availability alone does not prove the broadcast is currently live, and chat is unavailable in embedded players. Treat YouTube’s live status on the watch page as the primary check, with chat as a secondary clue. YouTube Help: Watch live streams
Likewise, continued playback does not establish that the event is still live. YouTube says a channel may post highlights or a replay after a stream ends, and those appear as videos. A replay can look like a continuous cartoon stream while no live broadcast is underway. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams

For channel owners: check broadcast status through the API
If you administer the channel or are building an authorized check, YouTube’s Live Streaming API can return broadcasts filtered by active status. The liveBroadcasts.list method defines broadcastStatus=active as returning current live broadcasts. The request requires authorization; the mine option applies to the authenticated user’s own broadcasts, so this is not an anonymous way to query any channel. Google for Developers: liveBroadcasts.list
Do not confuse an active incoming video feed with a live public broadcast. YouTube models the feed as a liveStream resource and the viewer-facing event as a separate liveBroadcast. A stream’s status.streamStatus can show that YouTube is receiving data, while the broadcast has its own lifecycle. If the broadcast just started, give it time to transition
A newly started broadcast may not become live immediately. YouTube’s API workflow documentation says the transition typically takes 5–10 seconds and can take up to one minute. While it is pending, the lifecycle can be liveStarting; once it reaches live, viewers can watch. This describes the API workflow, not a guarantee that every viewer interface updates on an identical schedule. Google for Developers: Live broadcasts and events
