YouTube supplies the live-stream connection; your playback setup supplies the loop. Before you start, confirm that you have permission to rebroadcast the specific game footage and tournament recording—being able to watch or download a replay does not grant those rights.
First, make sure you can rebroadcast the replay
Check permissions for the exact game, recording, event, territory, and intended monetization. Game-publisher rules and tournament-operator rules are separate: an allowance to make videos from game content does not necessarily cover an official event broadcast, its commentary, graphics, music, or someone else’s VOD.
- Riot games: Riot’s Legal policy allows some forms of individual gameplay-stream monetization under stated exceptions, but cautions against simply reusing existing esports matches or other players’ VODs with light commentary. Commercial projects outside its exceptions require a written license. Check the current policy for your use.
- Valve games: Valve’s Video Policy permits certain videos made with Valve game content and YouTube Partner Program monetization, but does not allow charging for access to or selling/licensing videos. Third-party material, including music, must be cleared separately.
- Dota 2 tournament footage: The DotaTV License allows tournament operators to set requirements for community streams. Check the specific event’s current terms.
These examples are not interchangeable. If the replay is an official tournament VOD, obtain permission from the relevant rights holder or use a source whose terms expressly allow your planned rebroadcast.
Check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general starting guide sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream. Review the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming guide before scheduling.

Build the replay playback and encoder setup
Prepare the replay sequence
Use a playback source that can continuously present the authorized match files or playlist to your encoder. Set an intentional transition, slate, or intermission screen between matches so gaps do not become an accidental blank feed. Keep desktop notifications, private information, and unlicensed music or overlays out of the captured output. These are production choices; YouTube does not provide a universal replay-loop recipe.
Connect an encoder to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Set the title, description, audience, privacy, and start/stop options for this broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room into the encoder’s YouTube or RTMP connection settings. YouTube describes encoders as a way to broadcast gameplay and overlays; its setup guide covers connecting an encoder and managing a stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Start the replay playback and encoder, then wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video and audio are correct before making the event public.
You can reuse stream settings, but verify the event details and audience setting each time. YouTube also supports software encoders; a capture card is not inherently required for replay files already available to the playback computer.

Set video quality and latency for a long broadcast
Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer and sustained upload connection can handle. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube documents H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate in YouTube’s current table for your chosen output rather than borrowing a value from another setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS when your encoder supports it. - Leave upload headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend a 20% margin between your stream’s bitrate and available upload bandwidth. Check the connection under load, not just its advertised maximum.
- Test motion and sound: Fast gameplay can reveal dropped frames or encoding limits that a static screen hides. Listen for missing game audio, excessive levels, and unintended microphone input.
- Choose latency deliberately: Lower latency can make chat interaction more responsive but may increase buffering. For a replay channel where immediate interaction is less important, favor stability. YouTube exposes latency and DVR controls in stream settings.
For a different protocol, YouTube’s HLS setup supports listed encoders including OBS, but HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires its own protocol configuration. Follow the current HLS setup instructions rather than applying RTMP settings unchanged.

Test, launch, and monitor the stream
- Run a private or unlisted test using representative match footage, transitions, and audio.
- Start the encoder early and inspect the Live Control Room preview and the watch page on the devices viewers are likely to use.
- Verify that playback advances into the next replay as expected, with no dead air, unintended desktop capture, or audio discontinuity.
- If keeping a local recording, check that it is being written and can be played back. Test any configured failover before relying on it.
- Once the public broadcast begins, keep monitoring stream health, picture, and sound. YouTube recommends preparing in advance, checking the preview, and monitoring quality throughout the event in its live streaming tips.
Plan stream length and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not promise the same automatic archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours. If you need a longer continuous channel, plan manageable broadcast segments or maintain a separate recording and verify the current archive behavior in Studio. Consider whether one long event or multiple scheduled events better fit your archive and restart needs.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot enable live streaming: Check channel verification and whether a live restriction has applied in the preceding 90 days. For first-time enablement, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no encoder signal: Confirm that the encoder is using the current stream URL and key, the correct protocol, and an active connection. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Reduce output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain; preserve the recommended upload headroom and inspect the encoder’s dropped-frame and YouTube stream-health indicators.
- The picture stutters despite a stable connection: Check whether the computer can decode the replay and encode the outgoing stream at the selected settings. Lowering output demands can help distinguish a local processing bottleneck from a network problem.
- Audio is missing or inconsistent: Check the playback source and encoder audio-device selection, then repeat the test with the same transitions and match audio planned for the live run.
- The stream ends or the archive is missing: Review the encoder’s stop behavior and YouTube’s stream controls. Do not assume a broadcast beyond 12 hours will receive the documented automatic archive treatment.
- A rights claim or restriction appears: Stop and review the rights to the game, event production, VOD, music, and graphics separately. A YouTube connection working technically does not establish permission to broadcast the content.
