To make a YouTube radio livestream with a waveform visualizer, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send it audio and video from OBS, and add an audio-reactive visualizer as an OBS Browser source. YouTube still needs a video feed even when the program is audio-only. Test the complete scene before going live, monitor stream health, and confirm broadcast rights for every track and visual.
What you need
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- An encoder such as OBS, with an audio source and a video scene. The video can be a static station card, a loop, or a moving waveform visualizer.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the bitrate you choose.
- Permission to use the music and visuals in a YouTube livestream.
Create the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Choose the Stream tab to create an encoder stream, or open Manage to schedule a broadcast.
- Set the broadcast details and visibility. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service if available, and enter the stream key and server information. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a new stream, YouTube says the encoder connection creates the watch page. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current flow.
Build an OBS scene with a waveform
Add the radio audio
Add the source that carries your program audio, such as an audio input or playback source, and confirm that it registers on the OBS audio meter. Keep your scene simple while checking the signal: the goal is a clean audio feed that reaches the stream, not merely a meter that moves locally.
Add a video background
Create a video feed even if the broadcast is radio. A static station image is the simplest option; a looping video adds motion without needing a live camera. Add the background to the scene and make sure it fills the intended canvas.
Load the visualizer
For an audio-reactive waveform, add an HTML visualizer through Sources > + > Browser in OBS. Configure the browser source using the visualizer’s instructions, then position and size it over the background. The visualizer must receive the same audio signal that OBS is sending; browser-source behavior can vary with the visualizer, operating system, and audio routing, so confirm that its movement follows the intended program audio before going live.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If a live-reactive waveform is not essential, use a pre-rendered loop or station card instead. That removes the need to route audio into a browser visualizer, though a pre-rendered waveform will not respond to the current track.
Choose encoder settings and test the stream
YouTube detects the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you send, then transcodes the stream for viewers. In OBS, use a constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. YouTube’s published bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table rather than copying a preset meant for a different output.

As examples from YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, 1080p at 30 fps is listed at 5 Mbps, while 720p at 60 fps is listed at 6 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not a test of your internet connection. Set the video codec and audio format to options supported by your encoder and YouTube; YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio among its guidance.
- Start a private or unlisted test broadcast, if appropriate for your channel and use case.
- Play representative audio and show the same kind of visual movement planned for the real program.
- Check playback from a viewer’s perspective: confirm sound, waveform response, image framing, and sync.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS connection status. If the feed is unstable, reduce the bitrate or output settings to match the available upload capacity, then test again.
YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Its guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an unusually long broadcast will be archived in full.

Choose how to keep the radio stream running
| Approach | Best suited to | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on a local computer | A supervised broadcast when the computer can remain on | Direct control over the audio, scene, and visualizer, but the computer, encoder, and home connection must stay available. |
| FFmpeg on a VPS | A technically managed background process | Can run without a desktop session, but requires server and process-restart setup. A technical guide describes this approach; it does not establish comparative uptime or cost. |
| StreamNeo | Continuous YouTube playback from uploaded videos without leaving a home computer on | Cloud looping and playlists with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. One flat price per slot for uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; first day free. |
| Other hosted playout services | Creators whose chosen service supports their playlist and visual needs | Check the service’s current visualizer workflow, operating terms, recovery behavior, and cost. Vendor documentation is not an independent reliability comparison. |
These approaches are not backed by an independent comparative test of uptime, visualizer quality, or total cost. Choose based on how much local control you need, whether the waveform must react live, your tolerance for maintenance, and the recovery behavior you have verified.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. You do not need to keep a computer or home connection running. It loops uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details, then start the free first day.

Confirm music and visual rights
Clear the exact tracks and visuals for the intended livestream use before broadcasting. YouTube scans live streams for copyrighted content, and a track being available through a music subscription does not by itself establish that the subscription permits a live broadcast. Check the provider’s current terms for your catalog, territory, and use, including any relevant composition, recording, or public-performance permissions. A vendor guide notes licensed music as one possible route, but the license itself—not a general recommendation—determines what you may broadcast.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming stream | Encoder is not connected or the stream key/server information is wrong. | Compare the OBS stream settings with the current values in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as private and replace it if it has been exposed. |
| Audio plays, but the waveform does not move | The browser visualizer cannot access the program audio, or it is listening to a different source. | Check OBS meters and the visualizer’s audio-routing instructions. Test with representative playback; do not assume every browser source or operating system routes audio the same way. |
| Viewers hear no audio | The intended source may not be included in the active scene or stream mix. | Check OBS audio meters and monitor the test from a separate viewer session. Verify the selected audio source and output mix. |
| Stream health reports instability | Upload capacity may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the connection may be fluctuating. | Use a lower bitrate or output setting, confirm the encoder uses CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and retest under the same conditions as the planned broadcast. |
| Scheduled stream does not appear live | The encoder preview may be connected, but the scheduled event still needs to be started in Live Control Room. | Wait for the preview, check stream health, and select Go live for the scheduled broadcast. |
