How Much Upload Bandwidth Does a YouTube Radio Livestream Need?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for at least 20% more upload capacity than your encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, as YouTube recommends. For example, a single stream sending 6 Mbps needs about 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity. A radio programme’s audio format alone does not determine the requirement: if it is sent as a video livestream, the encoder’s complete output bitrate is the useful figure.

Calculate the upload speed you need

  1. Find the encoder’s configured total output bitrate for the stream. Include the video and audio being sent.
  2. If you send a simultaneous backup stream, add its bitrate to the primary stream’s bitrate.
  3. Multiply that total by 1.2 to leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  4. Compare the result with your available upload speed—not your download speed.

For a single stream at 6 Mbps, the calculation is 6 × 1.2 = 7.2 Mbps. If you send a backup stream, include it before applying the 20% margin. YouTube’s 20% recommendation is a planning guideline, not a guarantee that any particular connection will remain stable.

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate examples

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists the following recommended H.264 video bitrates. The upload targets below apply the 20% headroom rule to those video bitrate figures for one stream; for your own setup, calculate from the encoder’s actual total output, including audio.

Resolution and frame rate Recommended H.264 video bitrate Upload target with 20% headroom
720p30 8 Mbps 9.6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps Not stated in the supplied figures
1080p30 14 Mbps 16.8 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 20.4 Mbps

The target for 720p60 is not calculated here because the figures provided specify the 720p30 example, not a separate worked target for 720p60. YouTube’s guidance varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec; it also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1, each with its own recommended bitrates. Check the live encoder table for the exact combination you use rather than carrying an H.264 figure over to another codec.

Does a radio livestream need less bandwidth?

Not necessarily. A radio show with a static visual may be configured at a lower video bitrate than a feed with detailed or changing visuals, but the audio-only nature of the programme does not by itself set the network requirement. Use the bitrate your encoder is actually sending and choose settings appropriate to the visual and the YouTube guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

YouTube’s H.264 live guidance specifies CBR and AAC or MP3 audio, with 128 Kbps recommended for stereo audio. That audio recommendation is only one part of the stream’s total output; it does not replace the video bitrate or the headroom calculation.

Check that your connection can sustain it

  1. Measure upload speed. Use a speed test that reports upload capacity. Download speed is not a substitute: YouTube notes that inbound speed is often higher than outbound speed.
  2. Test under realistic conditions. Before the broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the real programme. Other people using the same network can reduce the capacity available to the encoder.
  3. Monitor stream health. A passing speed test is only a snapshot. Watch the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health status during the broadcast so you can respond if the connection becomes unstable.
  4. Prefer Ethernet for a computer setup. YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection for live streaming from a computer. A wired connection can reduce Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot raise the upload speed your internet plan provides.

If you use a Cat6 Ethernet cable to connect the computer to the router, treat it as a way to avoid some Wi-Fi variability—not as an upgrade to your ISP’s upload capacity.

What if your upload speed is not enough?

  • Lower the encoder’s configured bitrate or choose a resolution and frame rate whose YouTube recommendation fits your available upstream capacity with headroom.
  • Check whether a simultaneous backup stream is consuming additional upload capacity. Include it in the total, or do not send it if your connection cannot sustain both streams.
  • Pause large uploads and reduce competing network use during the broadcast, then test again.
  • If Wi-Fi is inconsistent, try Ethernet and repeat the test; a wired connection will not fix an upload-capacity limit from the internet provider.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel running with uploaded radio recordings rather than broadcast live from a microphone or camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on; it does not go live from a camera.
