Lower the stream’s quality or enable its data-saving mode, then estimate usage from the service’s per-hour figure and multiply by 24 and the number of days. There is no single best resolution for every connection: the stream, player, and screen affect both data use and picture quality.
Change the player settings first
Use the controls in the service playing the cartoon. A lower quality setting is the clearest documented way to reduce data; automatic quality can rise when conditions allow. The trade-off is a less sharp picture, and exact savings depend on the stream.
YouTube
- For the current video: open the player’s Settings, choose Quality, then select Data saver or a lower resolution. YouTube describes Data saver as: “Lower picture quality, but videos may start faster.” The YouTube quality settings guide notes that Higher picture quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often. The Advanced option is not available for every video.
- To set a preference: open your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences. Set the preference for mobile networks separately from Wi-Fi so the metered connection does not inherit a higher-quality choice. See YouTube’s instructions.
Netflix
- In a browser: go to Account → Profiles → select the profile → Playback settings, then choose a lower data setting.
- In the mobile app: go to My Netflix → profile name → App Settings → Video Playback → Cellular Data Usage, then choose Save Data or Wi-Fi Only as appropriate. The profile’s playback setting can constrain the mobile setting. Netflix says the mobile control may be unavailable while Automatic is enabled or downloads are pending. Follow Netflix’s data-use instructions for the current controls.
“Wi-Fi Only” is useful if you want to prevent cellular playback, but it will not provide a lower-data option when you are watching over cellular. Choose Save Data if you intend to keep watching on that connection.
Estimate what continuous viewing will use
Use a service’s own per-hour estimate when it provides one. Multiply that figure by 24 for a day, then by the number of days you expect to watch. For example, Netflix’s Help Center lists per-device estimates of up to 0.3 GB per hour on Low, up to 0.7 GB on Medium, and on High up to 1 GB at standard definition, 3 GB at HD, or 7 GB at 4K. If sustained for 24 hours, those rates imply the daily totals below. Netflix’s figures are service estimates, not guarantees for a particular cartoon livestream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Netflix setting or quality | Published estimate per hour | Calculated estimate for 24 hours |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Up to 0.3 GB | Up to 7.2 GB |
| Medium | Up to 0.7 GB | Up to 16.8 GB |
| High, standard definition | Up to 1 GB | Up to 24 GB |
| High, HD | Up to 3 GB | Up to 72 GB |
| High, 4K | Up to 7 GB | Up to 168 GB |
The 24-hour amounts are arithmetic based on Netflix’s hourly estimates, not separately published measurements. Netflix also estimates mobile playback at about 4 hours per GB on Automatic and about 6 hours per GB on Save Data; Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more. See Netflix’s data-use estimates.
For another planning method, a stream held at 1 Mbps for 24 hours transfers approximately 10.8 decimal GB; for 30 days, approximately 324 GB. This is a bitrate conversion, not a measured result for a specific service or video. Leave headroom: actual encoded bitrate, network overhead, selected quality, and player behavior vary. Do not treat a quality label as a guaranteed data rate.

Choose a quality that fits the screen and the cap
Start low enough to protect the cap, then raise quality only if the image is too soft and your remaining allowance can support it. Compare the likely data use with clarity at the actual viewing size, buffering on the available connection, and whether the choice persists on the metered network.
- YouTube identifies 360p and 480p as typical SD resolutions, 720p and 1080p as HD, and UHD as 2160–3840 vertical lines. Its guidance says UHD needs a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps and uses much more data than HD or SD; see YouTube’s video quality and buffering guidance.
- Netflix recommends stable connections of 3 Mbps or higher for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. These are connection-speed recommendations for quality, not per-hour data guarantees; see Netflix’s internet connection recommendations.
A New Zealand Commerce Commission report published 27 October 2022 explains that Netflix encoding changed in 2021 so bitrate varies with video complexity. It says programs with fewer colors and less movement, such as cartoons, are encoded at a lower bitrate than fast-paced action films. The report also describes a 4K stream previously encoded at 15.6 Mbps being transmitted at no more than 12 Mbps as a worst case after that change. This is a dated, scoped description of Netflix encoding—not a current rate promise for every cartoon or platform. See the Commerce Commission’s Measuring Broadband New Zealand Spring Report 2022.

That encoding observation is a reason not to assume every cartoon consumes the same data as high-motion video, not a basis for predicting a specific saving. Simply making the player window smaller is not established as a way to reduce the downloaded stream.
Separate data-cap problems from buffering
A metered plan limits how much data you can use; a slow or unstable connection limits how smoothly the video can arrive. Lowering quality may help with buffering as well as data use, but the two problems are different. If the stream still buffers at a lower setting, check connection stability and the service’s quality guidance rather than assuming the data cap is the cause.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming your own uploaded cartoon videos as a 24/7 YouTube channel, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploaded videos, not a camera feed. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. This is an alternative for keeping a YouTube channel live, not a way to lower data use for watching a stream on a metered connection. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free day.
