First check which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection between OBS and YouTube, while Rendering Lag or Skipped Frames (Encoding Lag) points to local GPU or encoder overload. Fix the branch that matches the counter; lowering bitrate will not repair rendering lag, and lowering game graphics will not fix an unstable internet route.
Identify the kind of frame loss
Check OBS Statistics during a representative test
Open OBS’s Statistics window and note whether network-dropped frames, rendering lag, or skipped frames due to encoding lag increase. Menu labels and locations can vary by OBS version. Run a short unlisted test stream, or another test appropriate to your channel, while reproducing a busy section of the game with movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health and messages.
Change one setting at a time, then compare the relevant OBS counter and YouTube’s stream-health status. That makes it easier to tell whether the change addressed the symptom rather than coinciding with a temporary improvement.
- Network dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote server at the configured bitrate.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to compose scenes, often because the GPU is overloaded or competing with the game or other programs.
- Encoding lag: OBS is not encoding frames quickly enough. Check encoder load and system resources rather than assuming the internet is at fault.
If OBS reports network dropped frames
Test the connection before changing quality
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” and recommends a wired connection. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee: Ethernet will not fix ISP congestion or a bad route beyond your home network.
- Check upload capacity, then reduce bitrate if needed. Run an upload speed test and compare the result with the bitrate configured in OBS. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal safe limit. Available upload bandwidth can vary, and other devices or services may use it while you stream. Reduce OBS’s video bitrate in measured steps and repeat the representative test.
- Try another available ingest server. If your encoder or platform offers a server choice, test another option and watch the same counters. The best setting depends on the connection and route available to you.
- Review OBS network settings. Keep Bind to IP at its default unless you have a specific reason to change it. On Windows, OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing as possible tests. It also documents testing IPv4-only; if that makes no difference, return to the IPv4/IPv6 default. These controls may not exist on other operating systems or in every version.
- Check software and drivers that can interfere. Note whether a VPN, security suite, bundled network “optimizer,” or outdated network driver coincides with the drops. If security software is suspected, test cautiously: temporarily check whether it is responsible, add an OBS exception if appropriate, and re-enable protection. Do not leave security software disabled.
- Restart the modem or router, then escalate if needed. If drops continue, contact your ISP with the times, stream settings, and test results. Routing congestion or ISP-side changes may be outside your control.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS can dynamically lower bitrate during network congestion. This may reduce interruptions, but it does not fix the underlying connection and can reduce picture quality. Treat it as mitigation, not a substitute for a stable route and sustainable bitrate.

If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
Reduce the work competing with OBS
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a possible quick fix for GPU overload; it is not a guaranteed remedy.
- Free GPU resources. Close or reduce other GPU-heavy programs. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync so the game does not consume more GPU capacity than it needs.
- Lower the game’s graphics settings. Reduce demanding settings and check whether OBS’s rendering-lag counter changes during the same gameplay section.
- Simplify OBS scenes. Reduce demanding sources, filters, and browser sources where practical, especially in scenes active during gameplay.
- Reduce OBS output settings if the counters still rise. Lower output resolution or frame rate as needed. OBS notes that reducing from 60 fps to 30 fps is an option when 60 fps is not working. This can reduce smoothness or image detail; it is a performance trade-off, not a network repair.
If rendering and encoding remain healthy while only network-dropped frames increase, prioritize connection and bitrate troubleshooting instead of sacrificing output quality.
Use viewer reports to locate the problem
Ask affected viewers whether they see buffering, dropped playback, or an error, and check the stream from another device and network. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance distinguishes reports by scope:

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- One viewer: the viewer’s device or connection is a likely cause.
- Several viewers on the same internet connection: investigate their shared network.
- Viewers on different connections: the encoder may be involved. Check encoder output, CPU load, YouTube dashboard messages, and any local recording; then test the outbound connection and contact your ISP if needed.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a frame rate up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its H.264 bitrate figures below are YouTube recommendations listed on the page accessed October 3, 2026—not a measurement of your upload connection or a guarantee that your stream will be stable.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
Use an upload speed test and a representative stream test to decide whether your connection can sustain the setting. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and responding to its messages; the available recommendations and diagnostics can change.
