For a low-cost pilot, use a computer you already own, a suitable webcam (or its built-in camera), YouTube Studio and an encoder. Start at 720p30 over RTMPS with H.264 video, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. YouTube recommends 3 Mbps video for H.264 at 720p30; leave about 20% upload headroom and test the actual programme before scheduling it. The hardest part is usually not the equipment: it is getting the correct online rights for every recording and composition you play.
What you need for a low-cost pilot
Start with the equipment you have rather than buying a dedicated hardware encoder. A computer that can run an encoder, a usable webcam or built-in camera, headphones for monitoring, and a stable internet connection are enough to try a simple radio-first programme. The visual can be a station graphic or a camera view; an external USB webcam is optional if the camera you already have is unsuitable. YouTube’s guidance says a laptop and webcam can be used for a live stream.
- Computer-led setup: Use an existing computer for the encoder and YouTube Studio workflow. This is the practical starting point when the show is mainly audio with a simple visual.
- Phone-led setup: A phone can work for a simpler camera-led stream. Check that its connection, audio capture and battery arrangements suit the planned broadcast before relying on it.
- Monitoring: Keep headphones available to catch silence, clipping or an unexpected source change during rehearsal and broadcast.
No equipment model or purchase price is established here, so compare options by compatibility with your existing device, audio quality, upload headroom and whether the setup can be monitored reliably. Avoid buying an encoder appliance until a pilot shows that the computer workflow is inadequate.
Configure YouTube and the encoder
- Check channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to create or schedule a stream. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If live streaming is unavailable, resolve the channel eligibility issue before troubleshooting the encoder.
- Create the stream and protect its key. Use the stream setup in YouTube Studio and copy its stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Set a conservative profile. Begin at 1280 × 720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and stereo AAC at 128 kbps. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations list 3 Mbps video for 720p30. Choose RTMPS when the encoder offers it.
- Fit the stream to the connection. Add the video and audio bitrates to estimate the total streaming bitrate, then make sure it fits within the upload bandwidth available during the broadcast. YouTube recommends leaving roughly 20% headroom. Test from the actual broadcast location and at a representative time; a single speed test is not a guarantee, especially on a shared connection.
- Use a simpler picture if needed. For an audio-led station, a static graphic can reduce the video workload. If the connection struggles, lower the resolution or video bitrate rather than letting the stream interrupt. Keep the audio intelligible and continuous.
- Rehearse and monitor. Test the planned voice/music mix and visual, check the YouTube preview and audio levels, and watch stream health while live. Keep original station assets locally and prepare a simple fallback scene so you can recover from a mistaken visual or source selection.
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s encoder and streaming guidance was checked on 2026-10-03; confirm its current recommendations when you configure the broadcast.

Clear music rights before going live
A recording can involve separate rights in the sound recording and in the underlying musical and literary works. A permission from one rights holder or collecting society does not automatically clear the other layer. Make an itemized track list, identify the relevant recording owner or administrator and composition/publishing rights, and obtain written permission for the actual YouTube use, territories and any archive or video-on-demand availability.
Do not assume that buying a recording, subscribing to a consumer music service, or holding a venue or terrestrial-radio licence authorizes an internet simulcast. PPL’s current tariffs information says its on-ground licence covers physical venue use and does not permit non-physical or digital use; its FAQ says it does not issue digital-platform licences and directs users to individual labels. Its description of radio broadcast licensing for terrestrial private or public FM and community radio is not evidence that the same permission covers YouTube. Ask the relevant rights holders for written scope specific to your stream.

IPRS describes its remit as musical works and literary works associated with music, while sound-recording rights are handled by owners or administrators such as PPL, Novex and RMPL. It says platforms using its repertoire, including online streaming platforms, need a licence or author-royalty arrangement for that repertoire. Verify the actual repertoire and rights holders rather than assuming a single society clears every track.
IPRS explains the distinction this way: “Just as purchasing a printed copy of a theatrical play that is in copyright does not entitle the purchaser to perform the play in public, so also the purchaser of a copy of a piece of music or of a commercial recording, does not entitle him to perform in public the work embodied in the copy or recording.”

Before scheduling a stream, confirm whether the rights cover online communication to the public, the territories where viewers may watch, and any archived version. If a rights holder uses YouTube Content ID, ask whether the channel must be allowlisted and arrange that before broadcast. Keep the written permissions and any allowlisting confirmation with your station records.
This is operational guidance, not a quote for a licence or a determination of what a particular station owes. IPRS reported ₹602.4 crore in digital-streaming income for FY 2024–25, compared with ₹378.0 crore in FY 2023–24, and characterized the increase as 59% growth. Those are industry collection figures; they do not establish the price of a small station’s licence or what it may earn.

What can go wrong during a YouTube music stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Identified material may cause a placeholder, interruption or termination if it remains in the stream. Even licensed third-party content can trigger an interruption if the owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. An archived live stream may also receive a claim after the broadcast ends.
- YouTube Studio says live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies from the preceding 90 days.
- The encoder cannot connect: Confirm that the stream key is copied correctly and that the encoder is using the server details for the stream created in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
- Stream health shows network trouble or the programme stutters: Check the total bitrate against available upload capacity, including the recommended 20% margin. Reduce video resolution or bitrate and test again on the broadcast connection.
- Video is smooth but audio is missing, distorted or too loud: Check the selected audio input, listen on headphones, and rehearse the actual mix before going live. YouTube recommends testing the planned audio and video rather than relying on settings alone.
- The stream is interrupted for a music match: Do not assume that a licence alone prevents this. Contact the rights holder about the specific track and channel allowlisting, and do not resume with the same material until its use and Content ID handling are resolved.
- A claim appears on the archived stream: Review the claim against the written permissions and archive/VOD scope you obtained. Live clearance and the right to keep an archive should both be addressed before launch.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your station is built from prerecorded programmes rather than a live microphone or camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It does not broadcast a live camera or microphone, so it is not a substitute for an interactive live radio show.
