Start by checking which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames point to the connection between your encoder and YouTube, while rendering lag or encoding overload points to work your computer cannot keep up with. Fix the matching path before changing settings at random. OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing.
Identify the kind of frame loss first
Open View > Stats in OBS and watch the counters while the stream is running under a representative workload. Review the OBS log around the time the problem occurs as well. A brief idle snapshot may miss the cause: animation movement, scene changes, audio, and other active sources affect the load. More than one counter can rise, so treat network and local performance as separate branches rather than assuming one cause explains everything.

OBS describes connection-related drops as a connection stability or bitrate-capacity problem. Rendering and encoding problems are local workload issues; lowering the network bitrate alone will not fix a GPU bottleneck.
Fix network-dropped frames
Lower the bitrate to a stable level
In OBS, open Settings > Output and check the streaming video bitrate. OBS suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee: a speed test does not prove that your connection can sustain the same rate continuously, especially for a 24/7 broadcast. Use YouTube’s ingest recommendations as a ceiling and compatibility check, then choose a rate that remains stable in a real stream.

For the YouTube recommendations listed on its encoder settings page, H.264 ingest rates are 8 Mbps for 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. The same page lists AV1/H.265 recommendations of 6 Mbps, 10 Mbps, and 12 Mbps for those respective formats. These are recommended ingest bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate—not proof that your connection can sustain them. YouTube lists minimum rates separately; do not confuse a minimum with a recommendation. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before configuring a stream because platform recommendations may change.
Test the ingest route and destination
If bitrate reduction does not stop the counter, try another ingest server if YouTube or your streaming setup offers one. A temporary test to another service can help determine whether the issue is specific to a route or destination, but it is diagnostic and may not repair the original connection. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring Stream Health during the broadcast.

Check software and network hardware methodically
- Review whether a VPN, security application, or bundled network optimizer is interfering with OBS or deprioritizing its traffic. If you temporarily isolate security software for diagnosis, restore protection immediately afterward.
- Update network drivers where indicated, then retest with the same stream settings.
- Inspect the physical path only when there is reason to suspect it: modem, router, switch, extender, network card, and Ethernet cable can all be potential failure points. Isolate components one at a time rather than replacing equipment blindly.
- If local checks do not identify the fault, contact your ISP with the affected destination, timestamps, and OBS logs. Congestion or changes outside your home network may be involved.
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is worth considering only if testing implicates the existing cable or it appears damaged or unreliable. A new cable does not address an overloaded encoder, an ISP route problem, or an unsuitable bitrate.
Use OBS network options as tests, not cures
On Windows, OBS offers Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing; OBS notes these may help some users, but neither is guaranteed. Dynamic bitrate (Beta) can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce picture quality and does not fix the underlying connection. Testing IPv4 only can help isolate a network issue; revert it if it makes no difference. These options are not substitutes for stable upload capacity.

Fix rendering lag or encoding overload
Reduce scene and GPU workload
OBS uses GPU resources to compose and render scenes. Simplify scenes by removing unnecessary sources and expensive filters, and close applications you know are GPU-intensive. High-resolution animation displayed at a small size can also consume more resources than needed; use appropriately sized media when practical.
Reduce resolution or frame rate if needed
Lowering output resolution reduces rendering and encoding work. Frame rate also affects workload: if 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps and assess whether it suits the animation’s motion. Do not assume that 60 fps is necessary simply because the stream is continuous. Make one change at a time and test with representative movement and audio.

Apply Windows-specific advice only when it fits
OBS suggests running the application as administrator on Windows as a possible quick fix in some GPU-overload cases. It is conditional advice for local performance problems, not a remedy for network-dropped frames.

- Choose the source-appropriate output. Match resolution and frame rate to the animation and your system’s tested capacity; use YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations as a reference rather than a target your connection must reach.
- Check the stream key and encoder configuration. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. Its help page describes custom stream keys for manual settings. Use a key configured for your intended setup and avoid changing several variables at once.
- Run a representative test broadcast. Include the motion, scene complexity, and audio expected during the real stream. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch Stream Health while live. Read YouTube’s messages alongside OBS Stats; if the network counter rises, return to the network branch, and if rendering or encoding indicators rise, reduce local workload.
Because this is a children’s animation channel, make the correct audience declaration in YouTube Studio when the content is made for kids. The YouTube Live Streaming API documents selfDeclaredMadeForKids as the channel owner’s declaration field when inserting a broadcast and madeForKids as a read-only status. That technical reference does not resolve every legal or platform-policy question, so follow YouTube’s current audience-setting guidance for the channel.

Troubleshooting: match the symptom to the next move
