YouTube documents manual chapters for videos, but its public guidance does not document a chapter control for an active scheduled livestream. The dependable workflow is to note each show segment’s start time, then add chapter timestamps to the stream’s replay after it is archived. Don’t promise listeners that chapters will work during the broadcast unless you have tested that behavior on your own channel.
What chapters do—and when to add them
YouTube describes video chapters as sections with individual previews, helping viewers navigate to parts of a video. Manual chapters are made by adding timestamped titles to a video’s description in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-stream guidance separately covers scheduling and stream controls; it does not document a way to add chapters to an active broadcast. YouTube Help: Video Chapters · YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
For a scheduled radio show, treat chapters as replay navigation: prepare a rundown during the program, then put its timestamps in the archived replay’s description. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not explicitly settle whether creator-added chapter markers can display before a livestream ends.
How to add chapters to a scheduled radio livestream replay
- Schedule the broadcast. Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to schedule the stream and enter its show details. YouTube says scheduled streams may appear to subscribers as upcoming, with an option to choose “Notify me.” Manage live stream settings
- Keep a segment rundown. Note each segment’s actual elapsed start time and a short, accurate title as the show runs. This is production advice, not a YouTube requirement; it avoids estimating times from memory later.
- End the stream and locate its replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. In Studio, look for the Live Replay. Streams are archived by default, though you can manage the archive settings. Create a live stream via webcam · Promote your live stream
- Edit the replay description. In YouTube Studio, open the replay’s details, add timestamp-and-title lines to its description, and save the change. Follow YouTube’s manual chapter requirements: the first timestamp is
00:00, there are at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Video Chapters - Verify the watch page. Open the replay and check that the chapter titles and breaks appear and lead to the intended segments. YouTube notes that chapter access depends on feature eligibility. Test on your channel before advertising chapters as an in-stream feature.
- Organize the archive if useful. You can place the replay and related highlight clips in playlists; YouTube’s promotion guidance recommends playlists for organizing livestream archives and highlights. Promote your live stream
Manual chapters versus automatic chapters
For a radio rundown with planned segments, manual timestamps let you name and time each section yourself. YouTube also offers automatic chapters, but says not all videos qualify and not every eligible video receives them. Creators can allow or disable automatic chapters in Studio; they should not rely on the feature to identify a show’s segments accurately. A channel with active strikes or content considered inappropriate to some viewers may not have chapter access. If the feature is unavailable, YouTube says creators can apply for Advanced features. Chapters and DVR solve different problems
| Feature | When it applies | What it lets viewers do |
|---|---|---|
| DVR | During the live stream, when enabled | Pause, rewind, and continue playback during the stream. YouTube Help |
| Chapters | In a video, such as the livestream replay | Navigate to named sections and revisit a show segment. YouTube Help · Use chapters, mentioned people and places, & seeking features – Computer |
Use DVR for live-session controls and replay chapters to make a finished show easier to navigate. Neither feature is a substitute for the other.
