YouTube’s Autoplay setting is for playing another related video after the current one ends; it does not launch YouTube when a device starts. Whether sound begins without a tap or click depends on the device, app or browser, and its autoplay rules.
Because the device and operating system matter, there is no single startup recipe that works reliably on every computer, phone, TV, or kiosk. The steps below show what to configure and how to test it without assuming that a page opening guarantees sound.
What must happen after the reboot
For unattended playback, three things have to work independently: the device must start or sign in, YouTube or a browser must open the right destination, and the player must be allowed to begin playing with sound. A failure at any one layer can leave the stream silent or unavailable.
- Device and app startup: The operating system or browser needs a supported way to launch YouTube or open the saved stream page after restart or sign-in.
- Playback permission: The YouTube app or browser must allow playback to begin. Browser sound autoplay can be blocked even when the page opens successfully.
- Stream availability: The destination must still exist and be live. A live broadcast can end or change; its availability and post-reboot restart behavior are not guaranteed.
Set up the device to reopen the stream
On a computer using a browser
- Copy the URL of the specific YouTube radio stream you want to open.
- In the browser, find its startup setting and choose the option to open a specific page or set of pages. Add the stream URL. The exact menu name and location depend on the browser version.
- Configure the computer to start or sign in as needed after a reboot. The steps vary by operating system; a browser startup-page setting alone does not necessarily sign you in or launch the browser at system startup.
- Save the changes, then perform a normal restart while connected to the network. Check whether the computer signs in, the browser opens the saved URL, and the stream is still available.
A Raspberry Pi forum post from 2020 describes adding a YouTube address to Chromium’s “Open a specific page or set of pages” startup option. Treat it as an example for a particular setup, not current universal instructions. Startup controls and kiosk behavior can differ across operating systems and software versions.

On a phone or TV
Check whether the specific device and YouTube app offer a supported setting to reopen the app or resume an activity after restart. The available controls differ by device and software version, and the sources cited here do not establish one reliable procedure for Android, iOS, or televisions. Do not assume a saved stream URL will be opened automatically after a reboot.
Check YouTube Autoplay—but know what it does
YouTube defines Autoplay as playing another related video after the current video ends. Its setting is available on computer, mobile or tablet, and TV, and can differ from one device to another. Turn it on and verify the setting on the device that will actually play the stream; do not rely on a setting changed on a different device.

Autoplay is not a boot or app-launch control. Turning it on does not make the operating system open YouTube after a restart. It also does not guarantee that an unattended live stream will reconnect or remain available. YouTube may stop Autoplay after inactivity in some circumstances.
If the page opens but there is no sound
A browser may open the stream page and still prevent audible playback until someone interacts with the page. Chrome’s documented policy allows muted autoplay; autoplay with sound may depend on prior interaction with the site or, on desktop, the user’s media engagement. That engagement is based on an individual’s prior media use, so behavior can differ across profiles and devices.

- On the device that will be left unattended, open the stream manually and click or tap Play once if playback is paused.
- Check the browser’s site playback or sound permissions for YouTube, then test playback again. The exact controls depend on browser version.
- Restart normally and check separately whether the browser opens, the player starts, and audible sound is present.
- If sound still does not start without interaction, treat that as an autoplay-policy limitation rather than evidence that the startup-page setting failed.
Chrome’s developer documentation lists chrome.exe --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required as a flag for locally testing a site as if the user were strongly engaged. It is a developer testing aid, not a general consumer fix or a guarantee that YouTube will play audibly after every reboot. For a dedicated kiosk, use the operating system’s and browser’s currently supported kiosk or startup-management controls, and retest after updates. Chromium guidance recommends providing a Play control when autoplay is rejected.
Embedded players are a different solution
If you control a web page containing an embedded YouTube player, the IFrame Player parameter autoplay=1 requests initial playback after that embedded player loads; the default is 0. Embedded-player playlist parameters can also control playlist and loop behavior. These settings do not make a device launch a browser after reboot, and they do not override browser autoplay policy. Enabling autoplay in an embedded player also causes playback data to be collected and shared when the page loads.

| Device or browser startup | Reopen an app or saved stream page after startup or sign-in, where the device supports it. | Audible autoplay, a successful sign-in, or continued availability of a live broadcast. | Startup, login, network, browser, and operating-system changes can interrupt it. |
| YouTube Autoplay | Play another related video after the current video ends. | Launching YouTube after a reboot or resuming a live stream. | Check the setting on the device being used; preferences can differ by device. |
| Embedded-player autoplay | Request initial playback in an embedded player when its page loads. | Launching the page at boot or bypassing browser sound-autoplay rules. | Requires a page with an embedded player and remains subject to browser policy. |
Troubleshoot a failed restart test
- The device restarts, but YouTube does not open: The app or browser launch step is missing, or the device did not reach the configured startup or sign-in state. Review the device’s supported startup controls.
- The browser opens the wrong page: Check the saved startup URL and whether another startup page or session setting takes precedence.
- The stream page opens but is paused: Try manual playback, then check the browser’s site playback settings and autoplay policy.
- The player starts but is silent: Check the device’s volume and output selection, then check site sound permissions. Page launch and audio output are separate.
- The stream is unavailable: Confirm that the same live broadcast is still active and that the device has network access. A startup setting cannot restore a broadcast that has ended or changed.
- It worked before an update: Retest startup and playback after browser or operating-system updates; kiosk and autoplay behavior can change.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep your own pre-recorded radio stream live on YouTube around the clock, rather than to make a listener’s device resume playback, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It does not play from a camera or solve autoplay on a listener’s device.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
