For a typical pre-recorded 24/7 channel, start with the VLC Video source for playback and add Advanced Scene Switcher only if you need timed or conditional changes. Add WebSocket only if another application needs to control OBS. OBS describes plugins, scripts, and WebSocket as extension and control mechanisms, not reliability guarantees (OBS Remote Control Guide; OBS Developer Guide).
Install and configure the playlist and automation
1. Check OBS and plugin compatibility
Before installing Advanced Scene Switcher, verify the current OBS version and the plugin’s operating-system-specific download on its official OBS forum resource page. As listed on October 3, 2026, version 1.36.1 requires OBS 31.1.1 or later and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Plugin compatibility can change with OBS releases, so recheck the listing before upgrading OBS or the plugin. Back up your OBS settings before an upgrade.
2. Add video playback
- Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a source: in the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Name it, then add the video files to its playlist.
- Choose playback behavior: enable looping to repeat the playlist, or shuffle if you want randomized order. Confirm that the selected files have usable audio and video in the OBS preview.
- Test transitions: let the playlist reach a file boundary and confirm that the next item plays as intended. If you use shuffle or loop, verify the setting with the actual playlist rather than assuming it has taken effect.

3. Add scene or media automation when needed
Install Advanced Scene Switcher using the instructions for your operating system, then create a macro by selecting the condition that should trigger it and the OBS action to perform. For example, a time condition can trigger a scene change at a planned time; media or streaming conditions can trigger actions based on OBS state. The plugin listing describes these condition/action categories, but it does not validate a universal macro for unattended recovery. Test each macro in a non-critical session, including what happens when a condition is false or delayed.
4. Enable remote control only if you need it
OBS 28 and later includes WebSocket, so current OBS users generally do not need a separate obs-websocket download. In OBS, open Tools > WebSocket Server Settings, enable the server if required by your controller, and configure authentication with a strong password. Give that password only to trusted tools. OBS’s Remote Control Guide explains the built-in server; releases older than OBS 28 may require a legacy setup.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test the broadcast
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. Complete that step before the planned launch, not at broadcast time.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Scheduling helps viewers find a planned broadcast; it does not start or supervise OBS for you.
- Configure OBS’s stream connection. Use the YouTube integration if offered, or enter the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it, and replace it if exposed.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate according to the current YouTube encoder settings and your upload capacity; there is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every stream.
- Run a representative test. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Watch the OBS preview and YouTube stream health, check for audio problems or dropped frames, and confirm that the playlist and any scene changes work.
- Monitor after going live. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages and keep an eye on OBS, the host computer, power, and network. Plan what you will do if any of those fail.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish archive behavior for broadcasts lasting 12 hours or more; do not rely on a long-running stream being archived without checking current YouTube guidance (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
What a 24/7 OBS setup can—and cannot—automate
A continuous OBS broadcast depends on more than a plugin: the host computer must remain powered and available, the operating system and OBS must keep running, the media must play, the encoder must send a valid feed, and YouTube must accept it. A scene-switching macro or playlist handles only part of that chain. The reviewed official OBS and YouTube pages do not publish comparative 24/7 uptime results for plugins or validate a particular unattended recovery configuration.

OBS WebSocket can let an external controller change scenes or sources, but it does not itself keep OBS online. YouTube’s reconnect or ingest behavior should not be treated as a substitute for monitoring and a tested recovery plan. If uninterrupted availability matters, decide who or what will detect a failure, how the host will recover, and how you will verify that the stream has returned.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Advanced Scene Switcher will not install or load: check that your OBS meets the plugin’s listed minimum version, download the installer for your operating system, and confirm the current compatibility notes. The listed release requires OBS 31.1.1 or later.
- VLC Video source is missing or cannot play files: install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS. Re-add or verify the media paths, then test playback in OBS before going live.
- The playlist stops at the end: check the VLC source’s loop setting and test a complete playlist cycle. Shuffle changes item order; it is not a recovery feature.
- A macro does not trigger: check the condition, action, and any timing or state assumptions in the macro. Test the trigger in OBS and confirm that the target scene or media source exists and is available.
- An external controller cannot connect: verify that WebSocket is enabled and that the controller uses the configured connection details and authentication. Do not disable password protection to make a remote connection easier.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm live streaming is enabled, OBS is using the current stream URL and key, and the encoder settings follow YouTube’s guidance. Check the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- Stream health is poor or frames drop: compare the selected quality and bitrate with the available upload connection, run a representative test, and reduce settings if the connection cannot sustain them. Monitor stream health rather than relying on a generic preset.
- The stream disappears while the playlist still runs: playback alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a feed. Check OBS’s connection and YouTube stream health, then follow your recovery plan; the plugin sources do not establish guaranteed automatic recovery.
