Pin a short invitation that tells first-time viewers what the stream is, what they can expect if they return, and one next step. For example: “Enjoying the 24/7 [topic] stream? Subscribe for more [specific benefit] and join us again tomorrow.” Replace the bracketed text with a truthful description of your channel. No wording is proven to increase subscriptions; treat this as clear, practical copy, then judge its results using your own channel data.
What makes a useful pinned message?
A viewer arriving at an always-on stream may not know the channel or its schedule. Make the pin understandable without relying on context they have not seen.
- Name the stream’s actual value: say what viewers are watching, such as a game, music format, or recurring event.
- Offer a specific, truthful reason to return: for example, a named series or a real recurring feature. Do not promise something the channel does not deliver.
- Ask for one action: if the aim is subscriptions, make subscribing the main request. Avoid competing requests to subscribe, click, donate, and comment all at once.
- Keep it brief: YouTube’s live-chat message limit is 200 characters. A concise line is easier to scan in a fast-moving chat.
Pin examples to adapt
Replace the bracketed details with specifics your channel can stand behind. These are copy suggestions, not tested conversion formulas.
- Direct invitation: “New here? Subscribe for more [topic] and come back for [specific recurring benefit].”
- Community invitation: “Enjoy the stream? Subscribe, then tell us what you’d like to see next in chat.” Use this only if discussion is genuinely part of the stream.
- Next event: “Subscribe for the next [event or series]. Find the schedule on our channel page.” Check that the schedule is current and easy to find.
How to choose between pin options
YouTube documents how pinning works, but its official help material does not establish a best-performing subscription prompt or a conversion rate for particular wording. Compare your candidates for clarity, truthfulness, one-action simplicity, and readability within the chat limit. If you want to claim that one version performs better, use your channel’s subscriber analytics or a controlled wording trial rather than assuming the phrasing caused a change.

What YouTube pins and live-chat rules allow
- A creator can pin their own message or a viewer’s message. Only the channel owner can pin; only one message can be pinned at a time, and pinning another replaces the current one.
- Live-chat URLs are clickable in horizontal streams according to YouTube’s link-sharing guidance, but are not clickable in the mobile app’s vertical live feed. A link-dependent pin therefore may not work for every viewer.
- YouTube’s live-chat help says messages have a 200-character limit and viewers can send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds. It also says URLs or special characters are not allowed in live chat. YouTube’s separate link-sharing guidance describes clickable URLs in certain live-chat contexts, so link behavior is context-dependent; do not build the pin around a link alone.
- YouTube’s external-links policy applies to live streams and pinned content. Do not direct viewers to external material that violates Community Guidelines.
Use chat settings for participation, not as a growth guarantee
YouTube provides subscriber-only chat, an optional subscription-duration threshold, and slow mode. These controls can shape who participates and how quickly messages arrive, but their availability is not evidence that enabling them increases subscriptions. Choose them to suit the moderation needs and format of the stream.
When a live transition is part of the schedule
Live Redirect can send viewers to a Premiere or another channel’s live stream. YouTube’s eligibility guidance requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Its best practices include preparing the destination Premiere and telling viewers to wait for the transition. This can support a programmed event, but it is separate from an evergreen pinned invitation.

A pinned message can invite viewers to subscribe, but no particular wording guarantees subscriber growth. Keep the promise specific and honest, and use your own channel data to assess what resonates.
