Before you put music on air, clear the rights for the recordings and underlying works: a terrestrial or community-radio licence should not be assumed to cover a YouTube stream. The technical setup is not Kerala-specific; the music-rights questions are specific to your content, channel and intended use in India.
Choose the broadcast format before you set up
The right source depends on whether your station is music-only, host-led or a mix. Copyright requirements apply to music in all three formats, whether or not the channel is monetized.
- Music-only: Prepare a continuous playlist or program as audio paired with a visual, such as station artwork. A USB microphone is not needed just to play music.
- Host-led: You will need a microphone for presenters or interviews; YouTube lists microphones among typical external audio equipment for encoder streams. A mixer may also suit your production setup, but is not a YouTube requirement.
- Mixed programming: Plan how recorded music, live speech, announcements and any visuals will move through the same encoder. Check the rights for each recording you plan to include.
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. The choice is yours; no particular paid encoder is required. A computer-based setup depends on that computer, local power and internet connection staying available, while dedicated hardware changes the equipment involved but still needs reliable power, connectivity and monitoring. Check YouTube Live eligibility and prepare the channel
- In YouTube Studio, confirm that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- If the channel has never streamed live before, enable live streaming in advance. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the planned launch.
- Choose whether to create a stream for immediate use or schedule it in Live Control Room. Set the title, description and visibility there as appropriate for your station.

Create the stream and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, and create or schedule the broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Select RTMPS ingestion if your encoder supports it.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it, share it publicly or include it in a visible screen recording. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- Configure the encoder for a supported video codec—YouTube’s specification lists H.264, H.265 and AV1—and constant-bitrate encoding. Set a two-second keyframe interval where possible; YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate the encoder and connection can sustain. Do not maximize resolution at the expense of a stable stream. YouTube’s specification calls for RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, but the available connection and encoder determine which supported settings are practical.
- Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public. Confirm that the intended audio is present, the visual is playing, and stream health shows no continuity problem.

Test upload speed and make a reliability plan
Measure the upload connection you will actually use, at the location and time of day planned for the broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom: a stream should use no more than about 80% of the stable upload capacity available to it. For example, if the stable upload capacity is 10 Mbps, keep the stream at or below about 8 Mbps. Leave additional capacity if a backup stream will also use that connection. Do not treat a single speed test as proof that an overnight connection will remain stable.

- Test at the intended bitrate and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators.
- Plan how the encoder will restart after a crash and how the source will resume at the right point in the program.
- Consider backup internet or encoder failover if a local outage would take the channel off air. Keep in mind that a backup stream also uses bandwidth.
- Account for power cuts and equipment restarts. A computer or hardware encoder cannot transmit while it has no power.
- Arrange human monitoring for overnight periods, including who will notice a failed stream and what they can do to restore it.
YouTube recommends reliable connectivity, testing and backup encoder failover. These measures reduce operational risk; they do not guarantee uninterrupted uptime. (YouTube Help, “Streaming tips,” current guidance accessed 2026.)
Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
Do not rely on a single 24-hour broadcast to become a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. If a replay matters, consider separate shorter sessions or make a local recording and confirm that it is saving correctly. A local copy is a separate recording workflow; it does not change the archive limit for the live stream. Clear music rights for the actual YouTube use
YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for exploitation of the live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for matches to third-party content; it can interrupt or terminate a stream, and an archive may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. A stream staying live, or not being monetized, does not establish that the music is cleared.
For an India-based station, identify permissions for both the sound recording and its underlying musical and literary works as applicable. IPRS describes licensing for musical and literary works in its repertoire, including an Internet Non Interactive category, and notes that sound-recording rights can be administered separately by organizations such as PPL, Novex or RMPL. PPL India describes its radio-broadcast licence in relation to sound recordings on terrestrial FM and community radio; that description should not be taken as confirmation that a licence covers a YouTube internet stream. - Make a list of every recording planned for the broadcast and identify its sound-recording rights holder and the owners or administrators of the underlying work.
- Ask the relevant rights holders what written permission covers the specific YouTube livestream, the territories in which viewers may access it, and the channel’s monetization status.
- Ask separately whether the permission covers an archive or replay, since that is a different use from the live broadcast.
- Confirm whether the rights holder must allowlist the channel for Content ID or other matching systems to avoid an interruption. YouTube advises that third-party music may interrupt a live stream without allowlisting.
- Keep the written terms and any channel allowlisting confirmation with your station records before going on air.
These sources do not establish which permissions clear any particular station’s chosen catalogue. Coverage depends on the works, recordings, ownership, territories and uses involved. They also do not settle whether a separate regulatory licence or registration applies to a particular operator in Kerala; do not infer either that one is required solely because the stream is on YouTube or that none is required.
