To make OBS try to reconnect when its connection to YouTube drops, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatically Reconnect, and set a positive Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. The delay is the starting wait, not a fixed interval: OBS doubles the wait after each retry. These settings help OBS recover from a connection loss; they cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback for viewers.
Turn on automatic reconnect in OBS
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find Automatically Reconnect and enable it.
- Set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries to positive values. A retry count of zero disables reconnecting for outputs that support it.
- Select Apply or OK to save the settings.
The English OBS interface uses the labels Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries. If your interface uses another language, look for their localized equivalents. The OBS English interface strings list the English labels.
Choose retry values for your situation
The cited OBS documentation does not prescribe a universal best delay or retry count. Choose values according to the likely length of a brief interruption and how long you can wait before intervening manually.
- Retry Delay: Treat this as the initial wait before a retry. The OBS Project’s output reference says the retry time doubles on each retry to prevent overloading services. Later attempts will therefore be farther apart.
- Maximum Retries: Set a positive count that gives OBS time to recover from a short disruption while keeping in mind when you or another operator can check the stream. Setting it to zero disables reconnecting.
For a brief network fluctuation, a reasonable configuration is one that allows several attempts while an operator is available to monitor the stream. For a longer outage, more attempts do not repair the underlying connection; OBS may continue retrying while the network remains unavailable. Test your chosen values rather than assuming a particular combination guarantees recovery.

Test the stream before relying on reconnect
- Start a test stream before the event, using audio and on-screen movement similar to what you plan to broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, and confirm that the picture and audio reach the live stream as expected.
- Observe what happens if the encoder connection is interrupted, if you can safely test that behavior before the event. Confirm OBS attempts to reconnect and that the stream recovers acceptably.
- During the event, monitor YouTube’s health indicators and messages so you can distinguish a temporary recovery from a continuing connection problem.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, choosing a quality the available internet connection can reliably sustain, and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
Keep OBS reconnect settings separate from YouTube stream settings
OBS reconnect controls govern how the encoder tries to restore its output connection. They are different from the settings that tell YouTube where the feed is going and which stream to accept.

- Stream URL and stream key: These configure the encoder-to-YouTube destination and identify the stream. YouTube explains them in Manage live stream settings.
- Auto-start and auto-stop: YouTube provides controls for whether a broadcast can be started or stopped from the encoder. These affect stream lifecycle behavior; they do not change OBS’s retry delay or count.
If OBS reconnects but the YouTube broadcast does not behave as expected, check the stream lifecycle settings separately from OBS’s reconnect options.
Troubleshoot repeated disconnections
Dropped frames or recurring disconnects
OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check whether the configured bitrate is appropriate for the available connection rather than merely increasing the retry count. OBS explains this in its stream connection troubleshooting guide.

Unreliable Wi-Fi
If Wi-Fi is unstable, OBS recommends using a wired connection. Ethernet may improve stability in that situation, but it is not a guarantee; continue to diagnose the connection if drops persist.
OBS reconnects, but viewers still experience an interruption
Automatic reconnect is an encoder-side recovery attempt, not a promise that YouTube will keep every broadcast active through any length of disconnection or that viewers will see uninterrupted playback. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, and test the complete setup before a live event.

The stream does not start or stop as expected
Confirm the stream URL and key in the encoder, then review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Those controls are separate from OBS reconnect behavior.
