Neither ads nor memberships reliably earn more for every always-on YouTube channel. Ads can scale with eligible viewers, but YouTube does not guarantee that an ad will serve. Memberships bring recurring payments from viewers who join for your perks. The useful comparison is your channel’s actual creator revenue from each source over the same period—not advertiser CPM against membership income.
How live-stream ads earn revenue
When monetization is enabled for a live stream, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Mid-roll ads can be automatic or inserted manually. Automatic mid-roll settings offer low, medium and high frequency; YouTube describes those choices as corresponding to lower, medium and higher earnings potential. Manual and scheduled mid-rolls are also available, with scheduled intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30 minutes. YouTube’s live monetization guidance explains these options.
An ad slot is only an opportunity: YouTube’s ad systems decide whether to serve an ad, so a slot does not guarantee revenue. Delivery can vary with the audience, advertiser demand and settings. Ads are also turned off when a stream is embedded on an external site with auto-start.
YouTube reported that channels using automatic live mid-roll ads had, on average, over 20% higher in-stream ad revenue per hour than channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a platform-reported aggregate comparison of mid-roll settings—not a forecast for an individual channel, a guaranteed causal lift, or evidence that ads beat memberships.

To examine live ad revenue, use YouTube Analytics’ Live filter and distinguish live-stream revenue from live-replay revenue where the available breakdown allows it. YouTube notes that the Live filter can show a breakdown of ad revenue from streams and live replays.
How channel memberships earn revenue
Memberships are recurring monthly payments from viewers who choose to join in exchange for creator-defined perks. Examples include members-only badges and emojis. YouTube describes memberships as a possible fit for a small but passionate niche community; that is general platform guidance, not a prediction of what a particular channel will earn. Membership income depends on how many viewers join, the tier prices you offer, how long members stay and what it costs you to provide the perks. Recurring payments are not automatically profit: account for fulfillment work and any applicable transaction or tax treatment in your own reporting.
What YouTube’s revenue shares do—and do not—tell you
YouTube’s current partner earnings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, states a 55% share of net Watch Page ad revenue for creators who have accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module. It states a 70% share of net revenue from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks for creators who have accepted the Commerce Product Module. These are shares of different revenue bases, not a head-to-head earnings result. A higher percentage does not by itself mean a feature earns more: audience behavior, volume, ad delivery and the amounts viewers pay all matter.
Compare your channel’s actual earnings
- Choose one reporting period. Use identical start and end dates for both sources, and a period long enough to reduce the influence of day-to-day ad variation.
- Isolate live ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter and the available breakdowns to separate live streams from live replays. Do not treat a blended revenue figure as live-ad income.
- Record membership revenue for those dates. Use creator-reported revenue after the applicable platform share, and account separately for transaction or tax treatment that applies to your reporting.
- Record the audience and operating context. Note live hours and, if consistently available, unique live viewers or watch time. Track membership churn and the work or expense involved in delivering perks.
- Compare totals, then normalize. First compare actual creator revenue for each source. Then calculate revenue per live hour and, when the data supports a consistent comparison, per 1,000 live viewers or watch hours.
- Repeat over time. The result can change as your audience size and geography, ad inventory, schedule and membership offer change.
Use the right metrics
CPM is an advertiser-focused ad metric before YouTube’s revenue share; it is not the amount the creator takes home. RPM is creator-focused and reflects reported revenue after revenue share, but it can combine multiple sources—including ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers for videos. As a result, a blended RPM is not a clean measure of live-stream ad earnings. Use available Live analytics breakdowns to isolate live ad income before comparing it with membership receipts. What to weigh beyond the revenue total
- Volume and delivery: Ad income depends on eligible viewers and ads that actually serve. Membership income depends on paying members and their tiers.
- Consistency: Ads can vary with delivery and advertiser demand. Membership payments recur while members remain subscribed.
- Viewer experience: More frequent mid-rolls may affect an always-on stream’s viewing experience. Consider that alongside the potential earnings setting.
- Work and costs: Membership perks need ongoing delivery. Consider that effort before treating gross recurring payments as profit.
