First check where the picture disappears: OBS preview, YouTube playback, or just one source in an otherwise normal scene. If OBS preview is black, troubleshoot the selected scene and its sources before changing bitrate. If preview is normal but viewers see a black or frozen picture, check OBS rendering, encoding, and connection indicators. That comparison is a useful diagnostic starting point, not proof of a particular cause.
1. Identify where the black screen appears
- OBS preview is black: Start with scene selection, source visibility, layering, transforms, and the source-specific checks below.
- OBS preview is normal, but YouTube is black or frozen: Check OBS rendering or encoding performance and stream connection status. Compare the YouTube player on another device or ask a trusted viewer to check; a viewer-side playback issue can differ from what OBS is outputting.
- Only one part of the scene is black: Treat it as a source problem first. Identify whether it is a game, media file, browser page, camera or capture card, or display/window capture.
This split helps choose what to inspect, but it does not by itself establish the cause. OBS documents source composition, performance, and connection problems as separate troubleshooting areas.
2. Check the scene and source layout
- In OBS, select the scene intended for the live stream. Make sure you are not previewing a different scene from the one you expect to be live.
- In Sources, check that the picture source is visible using its eye icon. If it is hidden, turn visibility back on.
- Check the order of the sources. Sources higher in the list render above lower sources, so an opaque image, color, browser, or other layer can cover the video. Hide likely covering sources one at a time to find the obstruction, then restore any you still need.
- Select the expected picture source and inspect its position, size, and transform. Confirm its bounding box is in the canvas and large enough to see; a source can be present but placed off-canvas or reduced to a tiny area.
OBS’s Sources Guide explains source visibility and stacking order. Interface details can vary by OBS version, so rely on the scene and Sources concepts even if a label or control has moved.
3. Fix the source that is actually failing
Game Capture is blank
- Confirm the intended game or window is selected and the capture mode matches it.
- Some games may require OBS to run as administrator. Some fullscreen games stop rendering when you alt-tab; test whether the picture returns when the game is active.
- If Game Capture does not work for that title, try Window Capture where supported. OBS identifies Game Capture as Windows-only; on macOS and Linux, use the supported screen or window capture sources instead.
- On a system with multiple GPUs, OBS and the game may need to use the high-performance GPU together. Check which GPU each application is using before changing capture settings.
These compatibility cases and alternatives are covered in OBS’s Game Capture Source guide and Game Capture setup guide. A black Game Capture source does not necessarily mean the entire scene or stream is broken.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Media Source or VLC playlist stops showing video
- Confirm the file still exists at the configured location and can play outside OBS. For playlists, confirm the entries are available.
- Check the source’s loop setting and what it does at the end of playback or when the source becomes inactive. A file that reaches its end can leave no moving picture to show.
- Do not assume the default loop behavior: OBS documents Media Source looping as off by default, while VLC Video documents Loop Playlist as on by default. Your configuration or OBS version may differ.
See OBS’s Media Sources guide for the available playback controls. A loop setting is only useful if the file or playlist itself is accessible and plays correctly.
Browser Source is blank
As a practical first check, reload or inspect the page and confirm that the page and any external dependencies it uses are available. This is a troubleshooting check, not a documented guarantee that reload will fix a black source. Browser sources can also add rendering workload, especially in complex scenes.

Camera or capture card has no picture
- Verify the device is powered, the intended input is selected, and the camera or HDMI source is producing a signal.
- Check cables and inputs with another known-working combination if available. Another application may also be using the device.
- OBS describes video capture sources as inputs for webcams, capture cards, and other devices. Consider replacing hardware only when tests point to a faulty or inadequate device; do not buy a capture card to fix a software source or scene-layer issue.
Display or window capture is black
Confirm the intended display or window is selected and that the capture source is supported on your operating system. Platform permissions can matter, but the OBS source documentation cited here does not establish a specific permission fix for every system, so avoid applying an unrelated platform-specific remedy without checking the operating system’s current guidance.
4. Check rendering and encoding performance separately
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If the output becomes stale, choppy, or blank under load, look for rendering lag or encoding overload in OBS before assuming that a particular source is defective. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide notes that GPU overload or a bottleneck can cause performance trouble.

- Close or reduce other applications competing for GPU resources.
- Simplify complex scenes, and reduce resource-heavy browser sources or filters where practical.
- If performance remains inadequate, consider lowering output resolution or frame rate. This can reduce workload, but it is a performance trade-off rather than a source-specific repair.
Each source consumes resources, and a performance problem can affect the output as a whole. That does not prove overload caused a particular black source; if only one source is black in preview, follow its source-specific checks first.
5. Investigate the connection only when the symptoms point to delivery
A black source in OBS preview is not, on its own, a reason to lower bitrate. If OBS shows dropped frames or disconnections while the preview remains correct, investigate the stream connection. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream.

- Check OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators while the problem occurs.
- Compare the configured bitrate with upload capacity that remains stable during the stream, not just a brief peak.
- Test a wired connection if possible. OBS also lists VPN or security software interference and network drivers among relevant connection troubleshooting considerations.
- Reducing bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain the configured rate. Dynamic bitrate is a workaround that can lower quality; it does not fix the underlying network cause.
Use OBS’s Dropped Frames and Disconnections guide for connection troubleshooting. Viewer buffering or loading is not automatically evidence of a black OBS source: OBS notes that viewers’ devices, locations, and network conditions vary, and buffering can occur without dropped frames.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. A 24/7 stream needs a source that keeps producing video
For an always-on scene, look for content-specific failures before buying hardware: media may have reached its end, a game may have stopped rendering, or an external device may have lost its input signal. A long-running stream does not change the basic diagnostic order: locate the black output, inspect its source, then check performance or delivery if their indicators support that branch.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 channel is built from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or game capture, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
