To run FFmpeg continuously on an Indian VPS without exhausting its monthly bandwidth, calculate transfer from the stream’s bitrate first, then choose a VPS whose outbound quota and post-quota behavior cover that usage. At a steady bitrate, a 3 Mbps stream uses about 972 GB in a 30-day month; a 24/7 H.264 1080p30 stream at YouTube’s recommended 5 Mbps video rate uses about 1,620 GB of video data before overhead. Lowering resolution only saves data if you also run at a lower bitrate.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?

For decimal gigabytes and a steady bitrate B in megabits per second, estimate transfer with these formulas:

  • Per hour: B × 0.45 GB
  • Per 24-hour day: B × 10.8 GB
  • Per month: B × 0.45 × stream hours

These are bits-to-bytes calculations, not VPS measurements. Add headroom for protocol overhead, audio if its bitrate is not included, reconnects, monitoring, software updates and any other traffic the provider meters. Providers may define GB/TB differently and may meter inbound and outbound traffic differently, so confirm the quota definition.

Example stream Approximate video transfer Basis
3 Mbps, continuously for 30 days 972 GB 3 × 10.8 × 30; calculated, before headroom and other traffic
5 Mbps, continuously for 30 days 1,620 GB YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommended video rate; calculated video transfer before headroom

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p60. The 1080p60 rate alone implies approximately 151.2 GB per day, or 4,536 GB over 30 days, for video at a constant rate. Recommendations are platform guidance, not a guarantee of picture quality on every source or network route. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before choosing your settings, since recommendations can change.

If your quota is fixed, solve for hours rather than assuming 24/7 operation: maximum hours ≈ available GB ÷ (bitrate × 0.45). Reserve a margin instead of planning to use every included gigabyte. For simultaneous streams, add their bitrates to estimate their combined outbound use.

Choose settings that fit both YouTube and the quota

Bitrate determines transfer at a given streaming duration. Resolution is not a direct bandwidth measurement: lowering resolution helps only when you choose a correspondingly lower bitrate. Pick a codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate together, then check their data use against the VPS allowance.

Ingest setting YouTube guidance Bandwidth implication
H.264, 1080p30 5 Mbps recommended video bitrate About 54 GB/day, or 1,620 GB per 30-day month for video alone
H.264, 1080p60 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate About 151.2 GB/day, or 4,536 GB per 30-day month for video alone
H.264, 720p30 or 720p60 8 Mbps recommended video bitrate About 86.4 GB/day, or 2,592 GB per 30-day month for video alone
H.264, 480p30 3 Mbps recommended video bitrate About 32.4 GB/day, or 972 GB per 30-day month for video alone
H.264, 360p30 4 Mbps recommended video bitrate About 43.2 GB/day, or 1,296 GB per 30-day month for video alone
AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended About 43.2 GB/day at the listed minimum or 108 GB/day at the recommended rate
AV1 or H.265, 720p30 2 Mbps minimum; 6 Mbps recommended About 21.6 GB/day at the listed minimum or 64.8 GB/day at the recommended rate

The listed AV1 and H.265 figures are separate from the H.264 recommendations; use the codec-specific figures in YouTube’s current table. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported ingest codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR. For stereo audio, it recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps. 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Review the official settings for current details.

Choose the lowest bitrate that still gives acceptable results for the specific footage and motion. Do not assume a high-quality desktop preset will fit a small VPS transfer quota. For example, moving from 1080p30 H.264 at 5 Mbps to 480p30 at 3 Mbps reduces calculated continuous video use from about 1,620 GB to 972 GB per 30-day month; the resolution and bitrate are both different in this comparison.

Check a VPS’s quota, speed and encoding capacity

A port-speed headline and a monthly transfer allowance describe different limits. A 1 Gbps uplink does not mean the VPS can transmit at that rate all month, and a generous quota does not guarantee a stable sustained route to YouTube ingest.

  • Outbound transfer: Confirm the monthly allowance and whether inbound traffic also counts.
  • What happens at the limit: Find out whether service is throttled, stopped, suspended or charged overage fees. Check any speed cap after the quota.
  • Sustained throughput: Ask about sustained network rate, not just advertised port speed.
  • Location and route: Verify the server’s actual data-center location and test the route to YouTube ingest. An India-branded offering may be hosted elsewhere.
  • Compute and storage: If transcoding, confirm vCPU capacity is sufficient for real-time encoding. Stream copy can reduce CPU demand when the media is compatible, but container and timestamp compatibility still matter. Check RAM, disk space and operating-system support.
  • Price and policies: Review renewal price, taxes, fair-use rules and whether an “unlimited” claim is subject to resource policies.

Published provider terms illustrate why the allowance and its consequences matter. VPSWala’s catalogue, reviewed 21 August 2026, lists 50 GB monthly transfer for VPS 1 and 100 GB for VPS 2. OVHcloud’s Asia-Pacific VPS page lists 500 GB monthly for VPS-1 and says traffic beyond the quota is capped at 10 Mbps. These are provider-published listings, not independent network tests; confirm the live plan, location and regional conditions before purchase. Run FFmpeg to YouTube Live from the VPS

The command depends on the source file or playlist, installed FFmpeg build, available encoders and whether the media can be copied without transcoding. The following is an illustrative transcode template, not a command tested on an Indian VPS. Replace every placeholder privately and adapt it to the input and encoder available on your system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install and inspect FFmpeg. Use a trusted package or release source for your distribution. Record the build and check which encoders it includes with ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders; package versions and codec support vary.
  2. Prepare the input and pacing. For a prerecorded file, use real-time pacing so FFmpeg sends it at playback speed rather than uploading it faster than the stream can play. In a template, -re before the input is commonly used for this purpose. For a playlist, account for transitions, timestamps and any gaps. Use stream copy only if the existing audio/video codecs, timestamps and container are acceptable to the ingest path.
  3. Select a supported target. Choose an available encoder and set output resolution, frame rate, video bitrate and audio settings to match your quota calculation and YouTube’s current codec-specific guidance. The example below uses H.264 at 3 Mbps video, suitable only if that rate and output are appropriate for your source; it is not a universal quality recommendation.
  4. Set rate control and keyframes. Configure CBR behavior, a two-second keyframe interval and the encoder’s maximum rate/buffer as appropriate. With 30 fps, a two-second GOP is typically 60 frames; at 25 fps, it is typically 50. Confirm how the specific encoder interprets its GOP and rate-control options.
  5. Get the private ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the ingest URL and stream key generated for the broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection through to Google’s servers. Do not paste a real key into a public tutorial, screenshot, repository, shell history or logs. See YouTube’s security guidance and Live Streams API documentation.
  6. Test and monitor. Run a private or unlisted representative test, then check YouTube stream-health feedback and messages before relying on the setup. Test content with representative audio and motion. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

ffmpeg -re -i "/path/to/input.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3M -minrate 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Replace the input path and the ingest URL/key placeholders; do not literally use them. This assumes an FFmpeg build with libx264, an input suited to the selected output and a YouTube ingest URL/key in the expected RTMPS format. Options and support vary by FFmpeg version and build. The command exposes the key in its process arguments while running, so on a shared server use a safer secret-handling approach appropriate to your setup and restrict file and account access. For exact option behavior, consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg codec documentation.

For compatible media, consider stream copy

If the source’s codecs, timestamps and container are already suitable, stream copy can avoid re-encoding and reduce CPU use. It does not fix incompatible media, bad timestamps or unsuitable bitrate, and it does not reduce network transfer if the encoded bitrate is unchanged. Validate the output with a test stream before depending on it.

Protect the channel and the content

Keep the stream key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing. Only stream recordings you have the rights to use. A technically valid FFmpeg stream does not ensure YouTube will permit or monetize the content: copyright claims, live-stream rules and reused-content monetization policies are separate issues. Review YouTube’s applicable policies for the channel and material.

Troubleshoot quota, encoding and ingest problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The VPS reaches its monthly limit early Actual bitrate, audio, retries or other traffic exceeds the estimate; provider meters more traffic than expected Inspect outbound usage in the provider panel, verify whether inbound traffic counts, recalculate from the observed bitrate and reserve more headroom. Reduce bitrate or stream hours if needed.
The stream is unstable despite a fast advertised port Headline port speed does not guarantee sustained throughput or a stable route to the ingest server Check sustained network behavior and YouTube stream-health feedback; verify the VPS location and route, and contact the provider about shaping or congestion.
FFmpeg exits with an encoder or option error The installed build lacks the selected encoder, or the option differs for that encoder/version Check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders; select an available encoder and consult its documentation for rate-control and GOP options.
FFmpeg uploads a prerecorded file too quickly The input is not paced in real time Use real-time input pacing for the file and confirm the stream progresses at playback speed.
YouTube reports ingest or stream-health warnings Unsupported settings, unstable upload, key/URL error, or media timing/format issues Recheck the Live Control Room ingest URL and key, supported codec and bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval; test representative audio and motion and follow the specific health message.
Stream copy fails or playback is broken Source codecs, container, timestamps or metadata are not suitable for the chosen output Inspect the source and transcode to supported settings instead of copying; test before relying on the stream.
The key appears in shell history, a script or logs Secret was embedded in a command or stored where others can read it Restrict access, remove exposed copies where possible and rotate the stream key in YouTube Studio if it may have been disclosed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than managing FFmpeg and a VPS, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account.

StreamNeo’s plans differ by billing length, not features. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps costs the same per slot, and automatic recovery handles a YouTube drop. See StreamNeo or pricing, then start your free day.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
