Choose a YouTube-compatible tool
Confirm that the tool can connect to your specific YouTube channel and read its live chat. Nightbot’s Song Requests documentation describes YouTube as a supported provider and explains its request queue controls. StreamElements’ song-request documentation describes Twitch-only commands; its YouTube chatbot help says Media Request is not available for YouTube accounts. Those product details can change, so check the current documentation before configuring a stream.

Define the allowed music catalog
Make a playlist of tracks whose rights explicitly cover your planned livestream use, then restrict requests to that catalog where the tool allows it. Nightbot recommends using licensed or free music and limiting requests to a playlist. A track appearing in YouTube search, or being described as “free,” is not by itself proof that you have permission to broadcast it.

Configure requests and moderation before going live
Decide who can submit requests, which providers are permitted, whether requests must pass music or other filters, and how moderators can remove or skip tracks. Add queue and per-user limits when available. Nightbot documents user-level, provider, music-category, and liked-video controls. StreamElements documents moderation, request and duration limits, blacklists, and a public request page for its Twitch-supported module; those features do not make its documented Media Request feature a YouTube solution.

Set a fallback playlist
Requests can run out. Nightbot documents that its channel playlist can continue playing when the request queue is empty. Configure a suitable fallback and check how your chosen tool transitions between requested tracks and the playlist.

Test the full viewer-to-playback path
Before relying on the queue for continuous playback, test a viewer request, moderator rejection or removal, the queue display, playback on the stream, and the return to fallback music. Product documentation describes available features; it does not verify how your channel’s particular configuration behaves.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
A request queue handles submissions and playback; it does not grant music rights. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. It may warn the streamer and replace the live image; if the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A licensed track can still trigger an interruption if the channel has not been added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say the channel provider represents that it has the necessary rights for livestream content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Keep permission records, confirm that the grant covers livestreaming in the relevant territories and any archived stream, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where applicable.

Do not treat a Creator Music license as permission for a live request queue: YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content.

Compare the features that affect an actual YouTube broadcast, not just whether a bot has a command called “song request.”

- YouTube Live compatibility: Can the tool connect to your channel and work with its live chat?
- Queue versus playback: Does it play the requested media, manage a queue, or do both?
- Eligibility and moderation: Can you control who requests tracks and let moderators reject, remove, or skip items?
- Catalog controls: Can you restrict sources or filter requests to an approved playlist?
- Limits: Are queue size and per-user requests configurable?
- Empty-queue behavior: Is there a fallback playlist, and how does playback return to it?
Nightbot documents YouTube requests and playlist behavior. StreamElements explains that its chatbot manages a queue while its Media Request player handles playback, but its documented song-request commands are Twitch-only and its YouTube chatbot help says Media Request is unavailable for YouTube accounts.
