Choose to record the entire screen or a selected portion, set any options you need, then click Record. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, supported Macs also offer selected-window recording.
Record your Mac screen with Screenshot
- Open Screenshot: Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose what to capture: Select Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. To capture a window, choose Record Selected Window if it appears; Apple documents this option for macOS Tahoe 26 or later.
- Set options, if needed: Click Options to choose a microphone, show mouse clicks, set a timer, change where the file is saved, or select an available capture format.
- Start recording: Click Record. For a selected portion, adjust the selection before starting if necessary.
- Stop recording: Click the Stop control in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Esc.
- Open or locate the video: Click the floating thumbnail to work with the recording, or wait for it to save. The default save location is the Desktop unless you change it. Apple says the automatic filename follows the format “Screen Recording [date] at [time].mov.”
Apple’s current guide describes the built-in workflow in its screen-recording instructions. For playback or editing, Apple says recordings can be opened in QuickTime Player, iMovie, and other compatible video apps.
Choose the right recording options
Microphone and narration
In Options, select a microphone if you want your voice or other audio input recorded with the screen. Apple documents microphone selection; an external microphone is not a requirement.
Show mouse clicks
Turn on the click-display option if you want a black circle to appear when you click. It can make a game settings walkthrough or other demonstration easier to follow.

Timer and save location
Use the timer in Options when you need a few seconds to prepare before capture. Choose Save to to set a destination other than the Desktop.
Capture format
On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple lists SDR (Most Compatible), which records standard dynamic range in H.264, and HDR, which uses HEVC. The available choices depend on the Mac and macOS version, so check the options shown on your device.

Use QuickTime Player as another starting point
Open QuickTime Player and choose File > New Screen Recording, or press Control-Command-N. Apple’s current guide says this opens Screenshot and its recording controls.
Some Macs may instead show QuickTime’s older recording window. In that interface, use the arrow beside Record to choose a microphone or pointer-click display, then click to record the full screen or drag over an area and choose Start Recording. If QuickTime opens the Screenshot toolbar, use the Screenshot steps above.

Know what screen recording may not capture
Some app windows restrict recording. Apple gives Apple TV as an example of an app that may not allow its window to be captured; its documentation does not establish a universal workaround. If the window appears blank or unavailable, the restriction may come from the app rather than a setting you missed.

Screen recording saves a video file; it does not keep a YouTube channel live.
