Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can broadcast one YouTube event in both landscape (16:9) and portrait (9:16) so viewers in the Shorts feed on mobile see a vertical version while other viewers see the horizontal stream. Set up dual streaming before you go live: YouTube does not let you add the vertical feed after the broadcast has started. Most creators can configure both formats in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; encoder users can instead send a second vertical feed with RTMP(S) and a separate stream key.
Before you start: check eligibility and enable live streaming
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Its general live-streaming eligibility guidance also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. If this is your channel’s first live stream, enable the feature well ahead of the event because initial activation can take time. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
Dual format is a presentation choice, not a substitute for an event plan. Have the video, audio, graphics, and internet connection ready, and leave time to inspect both previews before you begin.
Set up dual format in YouTube Live Control Room
This built-in workflow is the simplest route if you want YouTube to create the landscape and portrait versions from your stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Choose an existing stream or schedule a new one.
- Open that event in Live Control Room and go to its stream settings. Check that Dual stream is enabled. YouTube’s default Live Control Room behavior is to create horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together.
- Open the vertical preview’s editing canvas and choose a layout: Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked.
- Adjust the zoom and position, then inspect the portrait preview. Keep important faces, text, game action, and interface elements inside the vertical frame.
- Preview and test the event before starting the broadcast. You cannot add the vertical format once the stream is live.
Choose a layout that fits the content
- Center crop: A practical starting point when the main subject stays near the center. Check that the crop does not cut off players, gameplay details, or on-screen text.
- Fit to phone width: Can preserve more of a wide image, though it may leave unused space around the image in portrait view.
- Stacked: Can suit content that benefits from arranging two visual regions vertically, such as a game feed and a presenter view.
These are composition considerations based on the available layout options, not guaranteed results. Use the actual subject and graphics in the preview to decide. YouTube says a layout edited through the canvas can still be adjusted while live, but make those changes carefully and watch the vertical preview.
Configure an encoder to send a separate vertical feed
If you use a third-party encoder and want to control the two feeds there, configure the vertical destination in Live Control Room before the event.

- In the event’s Stream tab in Live Control Room, open the vertical preview’s Auto menu and choose Encoder.
- Choose RTMP(S) and select a second stream key for the vertical feed.
- Configure the encoder to send the landscape feed to its corresponding horizontal key and the portrait feed to the separate vertical key. Confirm that each feed appears in the correct Live Control Room preview.
- Start the event from YouTube Studio after checking both previews and stream health.
A YouTube stream key is a credential that tells your encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private; reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport. Its guide to encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions covers those settings; the dual-format setup guidance does not name a mandatory encoder model.
What viewers see—and which features differ
Viewers use one shared stream URL, and subscribers receive one go-live notification. People watching from the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. Both formats share the same live chat. Vertical live can be discovered while people browse the Shorts feed, including by viewers who are not already subscribers.

| Horizontal | Clickable links in chat and the channel description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, 4K bitrate broadcast support, Premieres, and Live Redirect. |
| Both | Memberships and gifted memberships. |
Do not assume every channel can use every ad or fan-funding feature: availability depends on eligibility. YouTube’s dual-stream documentation describes the format differences.
Preflight and monitor the broadcast
For an encoder event, YouTube advises setting up the encoder well before airtime, checking the Live Control Room preview before starting, confirming the event is accessible on channel or watch pages and on mobile, and monitoring audio, video, and stream-health messages during the broadcast. Test with movement and audio similar to the real event; a static test image will not reveal every issue. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.

- Listen for clean, synchronized audio and watch for dropped frames, interruptions, or stream-health warnings.
- Open the event on a mobile device and a non-Shorts watch surface to confirm the intended viewer experience.
Read analytics for both formats
Live Control Room combines metrics for the two streams during and immediately after the broadcast. Metrics for the vertical stream alone become available 24 hours after the stream ends. Use the combined metrics for live monitoring, then return after that delay to review vertical-specific performance. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.
Troubleshooting dual-format live streams
There is no vertical preview
Check that Dual stream is enabled in the event settings. For the encoder workflow, confirm that the vertical preview is set to Encoder and that the second key is selected. Dual format must be configured before the event starts; you cannot add the vertical version mid-stream.

The vertical frame cuts off a face, game detail, or text
Adjust the vertical canvas’s zoom and position, or try another layout. Recheck the preview with the actual content, especially if important information sits near the edges of the landscape frame. A layout that works for a centered presenter may not work for a game HUD or wide gameplay scene.
The wrong image appears in one format
In the encoder workflow, verify which feed is being sent to each key and compare both outputs with their corresponding Live Control Room previews before starting. For the built-in workflow, revisit the vertical layout and confirm the intended crop.
The stream key may have been exposed
Treat the key as a password for the stream destination. Reset a compromised key in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement before going live.
Vertical-only analytics are missing
Use the combined stream metrics while the broadcast is live. Vertical-only metrics are available after the stated 24-hour delay following the end of the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
Dual-format streaming is for a live event; if instead you need an uploaded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
