To keep a useful record for a 24/7 YouTube stream, either capture stderr through the VPS service that runs FFmpeg or configure an FFmpeg report file. Use routine, readable logging for normal operation and a more verbose report when diagnosing a problem. Then check YouTube Live Control Room separately: an active FFmpeg process and clean local logs do not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Choose where the logs should go
There are two practical ways to retain FFmpeg output on a VPS. A report file is straightforward for a one-off diagnostic or a deliberately managed file. For a long-running service, capturing stderr through its supervisor or service manager usually fits the deployment better. The exact retrieval, persistence, rotation, and retention steps depend on your VPS distribution and service setup; there is no single verified command that applies to every host.

Write a detailed report for troubleshooting
Use -report for a one-off investigation
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation says, “By default the program logs to stderr.” The -report option writes the full command line and log output to a timestamped report in the current directory. It also turns on debug verbosity, which can produce far more output than you want to keep indefinitely.
ffmpeg -report -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'This is an illustrative shape, not a complete stream configuration. Replace INPUT, the encoding options, output format, and RTMPS destination with the values for your stream. Ensure the working directory is writable and has adequate access controls and retention. The full command line can contain the stream key: redact it before sharing a report or command, and do not publish it in screenshots, support requests, or public logs.

Set a report filename and level with FFREPORT
For a configurable report, the FFmpeg manual documents FFREPORT. This example writes a report named ffreport.log at level 32, the documented numeric alias for info:
FFREPORT='file=ffreport.log:level=32' ffmpeg -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'The fixed filename is suitable as an example, but it is not a rotation strategy. Configure file rotation and retention for your actual host rather than assuming FFmpeg will manage them. FFREPORT uses colon-separated key/value options; escape special characters and delimiters in values as the FFmpeg manual specifies. Configuration parsing errors are not fatal and do not appear in the report, so check that the expected file is actually created. Protect the command and output as you would any file that may contain the stream key.

Capture routine output for a long-running service
For a 24/7 process, configure the service manager or supervisor that starts FFmpeg to retain its stderr, or explicitly redirect stderr to a managed file. After deployment, verify the configured destination and check it again after restarting the service. Decide how logs will be rotated and retained so continuous output does not silently consume the VPS’s disk.
The right commands depend on the operating system, service manager, and existing service definition. Do not copy a generic systemd or journald command without confirming it matches your host; the logging destination and persistence settings are host-specific. A service-managed log can be easier to retrieve and associate with process restarts, but it still needs an understood retention policy and access controls.

Set useful verbosity and distinguish logs from progress
FFmpeg’s documented default log level is info. Its levels run from quiet through panic, fatal, error, warning, info, verbose, debug, and trace. The level flag prefixes messages with their level; time or datetime adds time information. For example:
-loglevel level+datetime+infoKeep routine records readable and retained; turn to -report when an incident needs more detail. Because -report implies debug verbosity, using it continuously can make logs much noisier and larger.

FFmpeg also has progress signals. -stats logs encoding progress at info level and is enabled by default. -progress URL emits program-friendly progress information. These signals can help show what FFmpeg is doing, but they are not confirmation that YouTube accepted the feed or is distributing a healthy live stream.
Check YouTube’s stream health separately
- Get the destination details from YouTube. In YouTube’s encoder setup workflow, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder configuration. Treat the key as secret: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not expose it in copied commands, reports, screenshots, or public support messages.
- Use compatible encoder settings. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the specific ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Test under representative conditions. Choose a stream quality your upload connection can sustain, run a speed test, and preflight with representative movement and audio. These checks help reveal problems before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Watch Live Control Room while streaming. YouTube says stream health and analytics can be checked there while streaming, and status messages include specific errors with instructions. Compare these destination-side messages with FFmpeg’s local stderr or report: the local log helps diagnose the input and encoder, while YouTube’s status shows what the ingest service reports.
Account for continuous-broadcast edge cases
Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast is one ordinary archived stream
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A planned 24/7 broadcast should not assume that a single uninterrupted 24-hour session is archived under that same condition. Check YouTube’s current live-stream guidance for the workflow and archive behavior appropriate to your broadcast.

Protect the VPS from log growth and credential exposure
- Choose a log destination with enough disk space and a defined retention or rotation policy.
- Restrict access to report and service log files, especially if the FFmpeg command line is recorded.
- Redact the stream key before sharing logs; if a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder configuration.
- After restarting the service, verify that new output still reaches the expected destination and that log collection did not rely on a transient shell session.
Troubleshoot common logging and streaming problems
