Use FFmpeg’s periodic progress output to inspect what your encoder is producing, then check YouTube Live Control Room for what the platform is receiving. Those are separate views: a healthy local bitrate or zero local frame drops does not prove a clean YouTube ingest or viewer playback.
1. Check the YouTube target before streaming
Choose the ingest resolution, frame rate, and video codec first. Compare the intended video bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for that combination. The figures below are YouTube-published ingest recommendations, not guarantees of what your connection can sustain. YouTube’s current Help page describes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These recommendations are from YouTube Help, whose page does not show a publication date; they were current when accessed in 2026. They refer to video ingest bitrate, not the full network load: audio and transport overhead add traffic. YouTube recommends upload capacity for the total stream bitrate with 20% headroom. Check the current settings and YouTube’s network guidance before relying on a bitrate table over time.
2. Add local FFmpeg progress output
Use -progress with an explicit -stats_period to make FFmpeg emit periodic, program-friendly key/value progress. Place these options before the output whose encoding you want to monitor, and retain your actual input, encoding, mapping, and YouTube output arguments:

ffmpeg -stats_period 1 -progress pipe:1 ...
This is an option pattern, not a complete command: the ellipsis must be replaced by the real arguments for your stream. FFmpeg documents that options normally apply to the next input or output, so placement matters. Confirm support and exact behavior with ffmpeg -h full or documentation matching your installed build; FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and may describe a newer version. Progress arrives in key/value blocks and ends with progress=continue or, at completion, progress=end. The ordinary -stats display is another option; FFmpeg documents a default update period of 0.5 seconds for it. If a wrapper reads stdout, make sure it can parse progress blocks and handle other logs appropriately. Record timestamps when observing changes so a brief fluctuation is not confused with sustained drift.

3. Interpret bitrate and frame information cautiously
Bitrate is local output telemetry
FFmpeg reports progress for its own process, not a direct measurement of what YouTube received or what viewers played. FFmpeg’s documented -vstats format defines br and avg_br in Kbit/s, along with frame count and output stream identifiers. Do not assume those fields are identical to fields in every -progress output: available fields and their meanings can depend on FFmpeg version, encoder, and output path. Inspect the output from the build actually running.
A frame counter is not a network-loss counter
A drop_frames field may appear in progress output, but confirm its presence and meaning for your build and output path. FFmpeg’s frame-rate modes can duplicate or drop frames to meet synchronization behavior: cfr targets constant frame rate, vfr may drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps, and passthrough passes frames with their timestamps. The separate -frame_drop_threshold option concerns how far behind frames may be before they are dropped. These local behaviors are not a universal count of Internet packet loss.

Likewise, -r is context-dependent. For encoded output, it can duplicate or drop frames to reach a constant frame rate; with stream copy, it signals a frame rate to the muxer and does not itself cause frames to be duplicated or dropped. It is not a general dropped-frame detector. A zero FFmpeg counter cannot prove that no frames were lost after packets left FFmpeg, while a nonzero count does not by itself prove an Internet problem. Consult FFmpeg’s documentation for the relevant options and your version.
4. Check YouTube’s side of the stream
Open YouTube Live Control Room during the event. Inspect the stream-health status and messages, and review the preview. YouTube says to monitor stream health and review messages during an event; its status can show specific errors and instructions. This is a platform-side observation, separate from FFmpeg’s local progress. YouTube Live encoder settings and stream health.

Compare readings on like-for-like terms: note the source (FFmpeg or YouTube), time window, metric, codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether the preview is healthy. YouTube’s health view is not a directly comparable universal dropped-frame counter for FFmpeg’s local count.

FFmpeg bitrate is below target or encoding falls behind
- Check encoder errors and CPU load, then assess whether the host can encode the selected codec, preset, resolution, and frame rate in real time.
- Verify the source audio/video and inspect a local recording if available. YouTube also recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load. YouTube stream troubleshooting.
FFmpeg looks stable, but YouTube reports a connection or bitrate problem
- Measure actual outbound capacity during the stream and account for shared-network congestion or interruptions.
- Ensure upload capacity exceeds the total stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check the stream configuration as well as the connection. YouTube network guidance.
FFmpeg shows drops or duplicates
- Inspect input timestamps and cadence, output
-r, and-fps_modebehavior. - Use YouTube health and preview alongside local diagnostics; do not treat the counter alone as proof of network loss.
YouTube preview is healthy, but viewers report problems
Compare reports across viewer connections and investigate playback-device or client-side conditions. Encoder progress cannot diagnose every viewer’s route or playback environment.
