If your YouTube livestream stops when you turn off your computer, the computer is probably running the encoder that sends the video to YouTube. When that encoder shuts down, the feed ends. Keep the computer awake and online for a conventional PC-based stream, or move the streaming job to a compatible independent device or cloud service if the broadcast must continue while your computer is off.
Why turning off your computer stops the stream
A YouTube encoder stream needs an active source feed. When software on your computer encodes gameplay, a camera, or other video and sends it to YouTube, shutting down that computer stops the encoder and removes the feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder guide explains the workflow.
Scheduling a livestream does not host or generate the video. It prepares an event and watch page; the encoder still has to connect and send content. Auto-start and auto-stop settings can let the encoder control when a stream begins or ends, but they do not keep the encoder running after its computer shuts down. Keep the same computer streaming
If you want to continue using the computer-based encoder, it must remain powered on, awake, connected to the internet, and running the streaming application for the duration of the broadcast.

- Prevent shutdown and sleep. Keep the computer plugged in where practical, disable automatic sleep for the duration of the stream, and do not close or quit the encoder. Menu names vary by operating system and version.
- Check the encoder and YouTube preview. Confirm the streaming application is open and sending video. In YouTube Live Control Room, check that the preview shows the correct video and audio before you go live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Verify the stream key and server URL. If the encoder is not connecting, check that it uses the correct YouTube stream key and server URL. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s “password and address.” A scheduled event by itself does not supply a video feed. Review the live stream settings.
- Check the network, not only the computer. A running encoder cannot maintain a stream through an unstable connection. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of about 20% over the stream bitrate and warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
If the stream must continue with your computer off
There is no YouTube setting that can keep a PC-based encoder alive after its host is turned off. Instead, choose an encoder that can operate independently of that computer and suits the video source.

For prerecorded video or a playlist
If you want to loop prerecorded gameplay or other video, use a device or service specifically suited to scheduled playback of media. YouTube describes the AJA HELO Plus as supporting scheduled prerecorded playback to YouTube without a computer, but check the device’s current capabilities, supported media formats, and compatibility with your account before buying.

For a camera or live gameplay source
A standalone encoder may work when it supports your camera or other source and can connect to your network. A hosted encoding workflow may also fit, but it needs a way to receive the source feed; turning off the computer that captures gameplay or sends the source can still interrupt a setup that depends on it. Confirm exactly which stage the independent device or service replaces.
Prepare and monitor the stream
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Use that time to confirm the correct feed appears in Live Control Room, test audio and video, and check failover if your setup supports it. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. An archive is a replay, not a continuation of the live broadcast after the encoder stops. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable; that affects playback controls, not whether a source is still sending the live feed. Troubleshooting common failures
- The stream ends as soon as the computer powers off: The PC is likely hosting the encoder. Keep it running, or move the encoding/playback task to compatible standalone hardware or a hosted service.
- The stream ends even though the computer stays on: Check that the encoder application is still running, the computer did not sleep, and the network connection remains stable. Check the Live Control Room for the current stream status.
- The scheduled watch page is ready, but there is no video: Scheduling does not send a feed. Start the encoder and verify the stream key and server URL in its settings.
- The feed is unstable or drops intermittently: Check upload capacity and connection stability. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate; a network disruption can break the stream.
- You can watch a replay but the channel is no longer live: The archive preserves a stream that already happened; it does not restart or extend the encoder feed.
- You need a computer-independent setup but are unsure what to buy: First identify whether the source is a camera, captured gameplay/screen, or prerecorded playlist. Then confirm the proposed encoder can accept that source and send it to YouTube without relying on the computer you plan to turn off.
