First confirm that your YouTube channel can livestream and that an eligible OCI instance is available in your tenancy’s home region. Then install FFmpeg for the VM’s operating system, prepare media you have permission to stream, and connect FFmpeg to the event-specific server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the event’s RTMPS address when your FFmpeg build supports it, and check the incoming preview before taking the event live.
What this setup does—and what “Oracle Cloud India” means
The arrangement is: OCI virtual machine in an eligible region → FFmpeg running on that VM → YouTube Live ingest. FFmpeg reads your playlist and sends an encoded live feed to YouTube. The VM, rather than your home computer, runs the encoder.
“India” does not guarantee that an Always Free instance can be created in an Indian region. Oracle’s Always Free compute eligibility is tied to the tenancy’s home region, and available capacity can vary. Check the region and the Always Free eligibility shown in your own OCI Console; do not assume an account can use a free instance in a region other than its home region. OCI Media Streams is a separate managed video service and is not a required part of this direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow.
Before you create the VM
Make sure YouTube Live is enabled
Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says enabling livestreaming for the first time can take at least 24 hours, so do not leave channel eligibility until the day you intend to launch. YouTube’s general guidance sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16.

Check OCI region, shape, and cost eligibility
In OCI Console, confirm your tenancy’s home region, then check which compute shapes are available there and explicitly marked as Always Free eligible. Availability can be constrained by temporary capacity shortages. If the console cannot create the instance, try again later or assess another eligible option in your home region; do not treat a listed free allowance as a promise that capacity is currently available.
Oracle’s documented Always Free quantities include up to two VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro instances per tenancy, and a VM.Standard.A1.Flex allowance of 3,000 OCPU hours and 18,000 GB hours monthly, equivalent to 4 OCPUs and 24 GB of memory for eligible Always Free tenancies. These are allowance figures, not a recommendation that every shape is suitable for every playlist or encode workload. Check current eligibility, usage, and any charges in your own account before provisioning or scaling resources.

For a playlist stream, compare candidate shapes by current regional availability, CPU architecture, memory, and whether the VM can handle the intended encode workload. The available evidence does not establish a universally suitable India-region shape, current India capacity, or a current VM price.
Create the VM and install FFmpeg
- Choose an eligible instance. In OCI Console, select the tenancy’s home region, create a compute instance using an available shape and operating-system image, and review the free-eligibility label and estimated charges shown during setup. Resource and image labels can change, so rely on the current console rather than an old screenshot or a shape name alone.
- Connect to the VM. Use the access method configured for your chosen image and account. Restrict access to the VM to people who need it, especially if its configuration will contain a YouTube stream key.
- Install FFmpeg using the image’s package instructions. The package manager and package availability depend on the guest operating system and image. On an apt-based system,
sudo apt install ffmpegis an example of an OS-dependent installation command, not a guaranteed OCI command for every image. Confirm the current package instructions for the image you chose, then verify that FFmpeg is installed and that its build supports the input formats and output protocol you plan to use. - Check protocol support. Use the FFmpeg build’s own help or build-configuration information to confirm whether RTMPS is supported. If it is not, install or select a build that supports the protocol before relying on an RTMPS ingest address.
Prepare a playlist you have the right to stream
Put the media files somewhere the VM can read them, and prepare a playlist in a format your installed FFmpeg build supports. The exact playlist syntax and encoding settings depend on the media, playlist format, and FFmpeg build; confirm those details for your files rather than pasting a command written for a different setup.

Clear rights for every video and audio track you stream, including music. You are responsible for the rights needed to stream and archive the content, as well as compliance with applicable laws and YouTube’s rules. A video being available online or appearing in a playlist does not by itself give you permission to rebroadcast it.
Create the YouTube event and connect FFmpeg
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event you intend to use.
- Copy that event’s server URL and stream key from its stream settings. The values are event-specific encoder credentials; use the values shown for the event instead of assuming a URL or key from another stream will work.
- Choose RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS. Open the lock control in YouTube’s stream settings to obtain the RTMPS address, and use that actual address rather than changing an RTMP URL by hand. The interface may display ordinary RTMP as the default. YouTube identifies port 443 as a troubleshooting option in relevant RTMPS cases.
- Configure FFmpeg for your playlist and the event’s ingest details. Use settings compatible with the source files, the installed FFmpeg build, and the server address supplied by YouTube. No complete command is included here because a correct command depends on those details and has not been validated for a particular VM, playlist format, codec, or build. Do not place a real stream key in a public example or reusable public script.
- Start FFmpeg, then inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that video and audio are present and that the feed is stable. Use the control room’s event controls to go live only after the preview is correct.
- When finished, stop the encoder and end the event from the appropriate controls. Stopping FFmpeg and ending the YouTube event are distinct actions; confirm the event is ended in Live Control Room.
Protect the stream key
Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream. Avoid putting it in public scripts, screenshots, shared logs, or shell commands that may be retained in shell history. Limit who can read configuration files and inspect logs or process information on the VM. If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration with the replacement.

RTMP or RTMPS?

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The OCI instance cannot be created
Check that you are in the tenancy’s home region, that the selected shape is marked eligible for your account, and that capacity is available. Free-tier eligibility does not eliminate temporary capacity limits. Review the console’s current availability and any charges before choosing a different shape or region.
The ffmpeg command is not found
FFmpeg may not be installed, or the image may use a different package manager or package name. Follow current installation instructions for the selected guest operating system, then verify the executable and its protocol support.

YouTube receives no feed
Confirm that FFmpeg is running, that the event-specific server URL and key were copied correctly, and that the output protocol matches the URL. For RTMPS, check that the installed build supports it and that you used the address displayed by YouTube’s lock control. Do not substitute an RTMP URL and simply edit its scheme.
The preview has no sound, no picture, or the wrong content
Check that the playlist files are readable by the VM, that the playlist format is supported by this FFmpeg build, and that the selected media streams and encoding configuration suit the source files. Resolve the problem in the incoming preview before taking the event live.
The stream key may have leaked
Reset the compromised key in Live Control Room, replace it in the protected encoder configuration, and restrict access to any logs, scripts, or accounts that could expose the old value.
