To change what plays in an always-on YouTube stream, edit the source playlist or media queue in the cloud host or encoder that sends the video to YouTube. YouTube’s live controls manage the broadcast and incoming feed; they are not a universal editor for a third-party host’s playlist. The exact steps—and whether an edit interrupts playback—depend on the service you use.
First, identify which playlist you mean
“Playlist” can refer to two different things:
- The source playlist: the ordered videos or media queue that a cloud encoder plays into your continuous live feed. Change this in the host or encoder supplying the feed.
- A YouTube playlist: a saved-video collection on your channel. Editing that collection changes its organization, not the media currently being sent to a live broadcast.
This guide covers the source playlist used by an always-on stream. If you mean a YouTube saved-video playlist, make the change in the playlist’s YouTube controls instead.
How to change the source playlist
- Find the service generating the feed. Sign in to the cloud host, streaming provider, or encoder connected to your YouTube stream. Locate the active channel, session, or output—not just the YouTube broadcast page.
- Open the media queue attached to that output. Look for the playlist or queue used by the active stream. Confirm it is the one currently supplying video to YouTube before changing anything.
- Make the change using the host’s controls. Reorder items, add or remove a video, or replace the playlist if the service allows it. Some hosts may support changes while running; others may require stopping or restarting the output. The provider’s instructions determine whether an edit is possible without interruption.
- Check the host’s output status. Confirm its encoder or transmission state shows that it is still sending video. If the output stopped or restarted, use the provider’s documented recovery controls.
- Check YouTube’s stream status and health. Inspect the live stream’s status and health information for an active feed or configuration warnings. The host’s output status and YouTube’s incoming-feed health answer different questions, so check both.
Why the playlist is usually changed outside YouTube
YouTube distinguishes the incoming video feed from the broadcast viewers watch. In Google’s API terminology, “A stream identifies the audio-video content that is being communicated to YouTube,” while “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” The broadcast is the viewer-facing event; the source queue belongs to the system producing and sending its video.
YouTube’s API documents broadcast and stream resources, rather than a general playlist editor for an unspecified cloud provider. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, for example, is a service for transcoding live linear video, but its documentation does not establish that it is the host behind your stream or that it provides the playlist control you need. Check your actual provider’s product documentation for its queue controls and live-edit behavior.

Do not confuse a playlist edit with stream settings
Changing the order or contents of a source playlist is not the same as changing delivery settings such as ingestion type, resolution, or frame rate. YouTube documents restrictions on updating certain stream properties after a stream is created; some changes require creating a stream with the proper settings. Those restrictions do not establish that an ordinary playlist edit requires a new broadcast.
Broadcast automation is separate, too. YouTube’s API includes settings related to starting or stopping a broadcast based on whether video is sent on its bound stream. These settings control broadcast lifecycle, not the contents of a provider’s media queue. If a change involves stream configuration rather than playlist contents, consult YouTube’s stream update documentation before altering the setup.

If the feed stops or the broadcast changes state
First check whether the cloud host is still producing output. Then check YouTube’s stream status and health details. If the output has stopped, follow the host’s recovery procedure. If the broadcast is transitioning, allow the transition to complete and verify that the bound stream is active before attempting another state change; YouTube documents transient states during broadcast transitions.
Do not assume that replacing a playlist requires creating a new broadcast, or that it can be done without interruption. Neither behavior is established for every provider. The host’s documentation is the authority on its own playlist controls and recovery steps.

Choosing a host when you do not know which controls you need
If you are selecting a service rather than editing an existing setup, ask each provider whether it supports in-place queue edits, whether edits interrupt or restart the outgoing feed, how it reports encoder and output health, what rollback or recovery controls it offers, and how it connects to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. The cited YouTube and Google Cloud documentation does not compare providers on these capabilities.
