Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can run a 24/7 rain ambience stream on a Raspberry Pi, but first choose what “stream” means: a self-hosted internet-radio audio feed uses Liquidsoap and an Icecast server, while a YouTube Live broadcast needs an encoder sending audio and video to YouTube. These are different setups. Neither the hardware guidance nor the platform documentation establishes guaranteed uninterrupted operation for a particular Pi build, so plan to test and monitor your setup rather than assume it will run without intervention.
Choose the kind of stream you want
| Decision | Self-hosted internet radio | YouTube Live |
|---|---|---|
| What listeners receive | An audio feed at a server mount point, played in a compatible player. | A live audio-and-video broadcast hosted and distributed by YouTube. |
| Main components | Audio source, Liquidsoap generator/encoder, Icecast relay server, and a player. | Audio/video source, encoder, YouTube server URL and stream key, and Live Control Room. |
| Bandwidth concern | Your server and network deliver the feed; more listeners require more bandwidth. | Your upload connection must sustain the encoder’s selected bitrate. |
| What to validate | Mount point, server reachability, listener access, and playback from another device. | Stream key and endpoint, encoder settings, preview, and stream health. |
Choose radio if you want an audio-only feed listeners can open in a compatible player. Choose YouTube if you want a platform live broadcast with a visual as well as rain audio. A Pi can serve as the audio source in a radio design, but listener capacity depends on the real server and network; do not infer a safe audience size from the board alone. Liquidsoap’s quick start explains the generator, server, and listener arrangement, and its Icecast guide describes the relay architecture.
Prepare a Raspberry Pi for continuous use
Install a headless operating system
Use a Raspberry Pi model that can run the software and encoding workload you select, install an operating system on boot media, and connect it to a reliable network. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is the command-line-only option Raspberry Pi documents for headless setups; Raspberry Pi recommends at least an 8 GB card for it. Use Raspberry Pi Imager to configure network access and remote administration, such as SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect, for first boot. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation for current setup instructions.
Match the power supply to the exact board
Check the official power guidance for the specific Pi model and attached peripherals before buying a supply. Raspberry Pi’s currently surfaced recommendations include 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5/Pi 500 (with peripheral-current limits at 3 A), 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B/Pi 400, and 5 V at 2.5 A for older listed models including Pi 3 and Zero. The hardware documentation says all models require 5.1 V and notes that consumption varies with peripherals. Confirm the current model-specific recommendation in Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.

Pick the audio output you actually need
Raspberry Pi documentation lists HDMI and USB audio across models, Bluetooth where equipped, and a 3.5 mm jack on Pi 1 through Pi 4. That jack is line-level, so it may need amplification. A HAT or USB audio interface is optional; choose one only if your setup needs a particular analog or digital connection. A YouTube encoder also needs a visual source, while an internet-radio feed can be audio-only.
Build a self-hosted audio-radio stream
In this design, Liquidsoap generates and encodes the audio, then sends it to Icecast, which relays it to connected listeners. As the Liquidsoap documentation puts it, “Liquidsoap generates and encodes the stream, sends it to an Icecast server, and the Icecast server relays it to all its listeners.”

- Prepare the rain source. Put a rain recording or playlist somewhere the Pi can access reliably, preferably on local storage. Make sure you have the right to stream the recording.
- Set up the generator and relay. Configure Liquidsoap to read the source, encode it, and send it to the Icecast server. You need the server address, a mount point, and the credentials required by your configuration. Keep passwords private; do not publish them in a guide or expose them in a public configuration.
- Make the feed reachable. Check that the Icecast mount point and network/firewall configuration allow intended listeners to reach the server. If the relay is behind a router or firewall, verify its externally reachable address and rules rather than assuming local playback proves public access.
- Test from another device. Open the mount-point URL in a compatible player from a device other than the Pi. Confirm that audio starts and continues, and check access from the network your intended audience will use.
- Size for real listeners. Liquidsoap’s example explains that the server sends a feed to each connected listener, so additional listeners require additional bandwidth. Measure and test your actual network and relay capacity; the available documentation does not establish a listener limit for a particular Pi build.
Liquidsoap’s development documentation is marked 2.5.x. Package names and syntax can vary with software and Raspberry Pi OS releases; verify the instructions for the versions you choose rather than copying an unverified, version-independent install command.
Send a rain ambience broadcast to YouTube Live
For YouTube, the Pi must produce an audio/video stream and an encoder must send it to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. The flow is separate from an Icecast radio feed.

- Prepare the broadcast in YouTube. Create or schedule the live broadcast using YouTube’s current Live Control Room workflow and obtain its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or include it in public logs.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings guidance for the recommended bitrate that matches your resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single appropriate bitrate for every stream.
- Choose settings the Pi and connection can sustain. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. For a mostly static rain visual, a needlessly high resolution or frame rate adds load without being necessary to the scene. This is an implementation recommendation, not a benchmark of any particular Pi: test the selected codec, quality, and upload connection together.
- Test representative content before relying on it. Run a test with the rain audio and visual you intend to use. YouTube advises checking upload speed, testing representative audio/video, and monitoring stream health and messages. Start sending from the encoder, check the preview and health in Live Control Room, and correct warnings before treating the stream as ready.
- Understand archiving limits. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a promise of one unbroken 24-hour archive, so do not plan on a single continuous archive on that basis.
See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance for its current server URL, stream key, and Live Control Room steps.
Make the setup recover and prove it can stay up
Official setup documents cover headless configuration, power selection, audio options, and YouTube testing and monitoring. They do not certify any Pi model, storage medium, power arrangement, or software configuration for uninterrupted 24/7 rain streaming. Treat continuous operation as something to engineer and validate under your own workload.

- Configure the relevant service or encoder to restart after failure, then confirm that it actually recovers.
- Test a full reboot and a network interruption; verify that the source, relay or encoder, and listener or YouTube feed return as intended.
- Monitor playback from another device, not only the local process status. For YouTube, also inspect stream health and messages in Live Control Room.
- Check power, storage, and temperature during a representative run. Raspberry Pi documents model-specific power supplies and thermal management, but no endurance or failure-rate figure is established here.
- Keep the rain recording available locally and protect stream and server credentials.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Radio source runs locally, but listeners cannot connect | Icecast mount point, server address, firewall/router reachability, or listener URL. | Test the mount point from another device and network; verify the server configuration and access rules. |
| Radio audio stops or does not begin | Source-file path, playlist availability, Liquidsoap configuration, or the connection from Liquidsoap to Icecast. | Confirm the source is readable, inspect service output and server status, then test playback again. |
| YouTube does not receive the broadcast | Stream key, server URL, encoder connection, or stream configuration. | Recheck the URL and key in the encoder, start sending again, and review Live Control Room messages. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or playback breaks up | Upload capacity or encoder settings that the Pi/network cannot sustain. | Run an upload speed test, lower the demanding settings, and retest with representative content against YouTube’s current recommendations. |
| The service fails after a reboot or network loss | Startup/restart configuration, network recovery, or source availability. | Reproduce the failure deliberately, adjust the recovery setup, and repeat the test while monitoring the actual listener or broadcast. |
