The right fix depends on your setup—YouTube may receive a relay from IBM, or it may be a separate output from your encoder. Note the time of the next disconnect, then compare the encoder’s connection and dropped-frame indicators with IBM’s monitoring tools and, if YouTube is in the path, YouTube’s live diagnostics.
1. Find the point where the stream breaks
Write down the exact time of a disconnect and what each system reported at that moment. Check the encoder first, then IBM Video Streaming, and then YouTube if it receives the stream. A disconnect on one leg does not prove that the other legs failed too.
- Encoder reports a disconnect or dropped frames: investigate encoder load, upload capacity, and the encoder-to-IBM connection.
- Encoder appears connected but IBM stops receiving the stream: check the configured IBM ingest URL and key, then investigate network or firewall access to IBM.
- IBM continues receiving the stream but YouTube reports an issue: focus on the IBM-to-YouTube relay or the encoder’s separate YouTube output, depending on your setup.
IBM’s ECDN network test tool includes traceroute, ping, ingest and port-1935 connectivity, ECDN, FLOT, and broadcast tests. Use the results alongside encoder and platform monitoring; no single check is guaranteed to identify every fault.
2. Check upload stability and encoder load
Give the stream enough upload headroom
IBM recommends wired Ethernet where possible, avoiding congested or shared networks, and keeping the target stream bitrate at or below 50% of the available upload bandwidth. That headroom helps accommodate variation in a connection; a speed result from one moment does not establish that the connection stays stable throughout a broadcast.

If you are using Wi-Fi, try a wired connection as a diagnostic step. It is not a guaranteed fix, but it can help distinguish a wireless or congested-network problem from an encoder or platform issue.
Look for dropped frames and resource pressure
Compare the encoder’s dropped-frame indicators with CPU and GPU load at the time of interruption. As a test, close other high-load work and see whether the stream becomes more stable. IBM notes that HD and higher-bitrate streaming needs sufficient CPU or GPU resources, and recommends lowering resolution or bitrate if frames drop or the stream stutters.

3. Verify IBM’s ingest settings and encoding
Check the selected channel’s broadcast details
In the selected IBM channel’s Broadcast Settings, verify the RTMP URL and stream key entered in your third-party encoder. A wrong, outdated, or mismatched value can prevent the encoder from publishing correctly. IBM supports RTMPS for secure ingest.
Treat the stream key as a credential: keep it private, because someone with the URL and key may be able to publish to that channel. IBM’s API documentation describes channel and temporary streaming keys; do not assume that temporary-key behavior applies to every key or dashboard configuration.

Use a compatible starting profile
For most cloud-transcoding applications, IBM recommends starting with one 720p input using these settings. They are vendor recommendations, not a diagnosis of your particular stream.

If you see dropped frames or stuttering, lower the bitrate or resolution and check again. Do not move to 1080p or 4K unless your encoder and upload connection can support the added demands.

4. Check firewall access for your IBM cluster
Ask your network administrator whether outbound access required for IBM ingest is being blocked. IBM’s detailed firewall guidance for its EU cluster calls for outbound TCP port 1935 to IBM IP ranges for RTMP, with additional ports for secure ingest. Those addresses and rules are EU-cluster-specific; do not copy them for an account on another cluster. Use the firewall requirements that apply to your account’s cluster.

If IBM relays the stream to YouTube, or your encoder sends a separate output to YouTube, inspect YouTube’s live diagnostics and error guidance for encoder errors, codec or audio issues, and source-feed problems. If you use primary and backup feeds, check that their frame rates are consistent.

If YouTube is not receiving this broadcast at all, YouTube diagnostics cannot explain a failure between your encoder and IBM. Prioritize the encoder, network, IBM ingest settings, and cluster-specific firewall access instead.
6. Check for an incident and prepare an escalation
Check IBM Video Streaming’s official status page for a service incident. If the problem continues, contact IBM support with the account and channel information, a concise description, the disconnect timestamps, screenshots, and any error messages. Support hours and holiday coverage can change, so confirm the current details on IBM’s support contact page.
