To repeat a pre-recorded file continuously in AWS Elemental MediaLive, set the input attachment’s Source end behavior to LOOP. Add an RTMP output group configured with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; use RTMPS if the destination settings are compatible. LOOP restarts the file at its end, so a follow input will not take over while that input is looping.
What you need before configuring the loop
- A MediaLive channel and a supported file input. AWS lists MP4 files with an
.mp4extension and TS files with.tsor.m2tsas VOD input types. See MediaLive source types. - A YouTube Live event and its stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the event. See YouTube live settings.
- A MediaLive output profile compatible with your selected YouTube ingest settings. Available codecs and controls depend on the MediaLive input and output configuration; do not assume every codec YouTube accepts is available in every MediaLive channel configuration.
Set the MediaLive file input to repeat
- In the MediaLive channel configuration, open Input attachments and select the file input attached to the channel.
- Open that input attachment’s general settings and set Source end behavior to LOOP.
- Save the channel configuration and start or update the channel as appropriate for your workflow. When the file reaches its end, MediaLive begins ingesting it again from the beginning. AWS documents this as the behavior of LOOP in the MediaLive User Guide.
LOOP is a repeat-at-end setting, not an input-loss setting. Input-loss handling concerns replacement frames or slate when an input is lost; it is not the control for intentionally replaying a completed file. See AWS input-loss handling.
Configure MediaLive output for YouTube
- Add an RTMP output group to the channel. AWS describes the setup in its RTMP output group guide.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event you intend to use. Enter the destination details in MediaLive’s output configuration. AWS destination fields include protocol, address, port, application name and stream name; credentials may be required depending on the destination. Refer to MediaLive RTMP destinations and the YouTube event settings.
- Choose RTMPS when available and compatible with the MediaLive destination configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP traffic using TLS/SSL. Select the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room rather than assuming the default displayed URL is the secure one. Confirm protocol and certificate settings for the destination. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Match the encoder settings to the YouTube profile
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. MediaLive’s available choices vary by configuration, so check that the channel output profile matches the event’s accepted settings. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the exact codec, resolution and frame-rate combination.
For a concrete H.264 example, YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, gives 1080p at 30 fps a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate; at 1080p at 60 fps, it gives 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations for those specific profiles, not universal MediaLive values. Use the matching row for your actual codec, resolution and frame rate rather than copying a bitrate from another profile.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate to the profile you intend to deliver.
- Select a codec and bitrate supported by both the configured MediaLive channel and the chosen YouTube ingest profile.
- Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where the MediaLive controls permit, keeping the interval no longer than four seconds under YouTube’s guidance.
- Test with representative motion and audio, then inspect stream health in Live Control Room before relying on the live event. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Choose the right behavior for schedules and multiple inputs
| Goal | Input behavior | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat the file each time it ends | LOOP | MediaLive restarts ingestion from the file’s beginning. A following follow-input transition will not succeed while the current input loops. |
| Play the file once, then move to a follow input | CONTINUE | The file completes once; the channel can follow the configured next-input or input-loss behavior. AWS says a follow input cannot succeed if the current input is set to LOOP. |
| Replay a file at a later scheduled point | Switch away, then switch back to the static file | Reselecting a static file begins ingestion from the start of the file or clipped section. This is scheduled re-selection, not continuous LOOP behavior. |
AWS documents the follow-input constraint and end behavior in the MediaLive User Guide. The switch-away-and-back behavior is also described in the guide’s static input switching documentation.
Test and troubleshoot before the event
- The file plays once and stops: Check the input attachment’s Source end behavior; CONTINUE plays once, while LOOP restarts at file end.
- A follow input never takes over: If the active file input is set to LOOP, it restarts at end-of-file rather than completing for the follow input. Set it to CONTINUE when the planned transition requires completion.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the event’s current stream URL and key, and check MediaLive’s protocol, address, port, application and stream-name fields. Confirm the key has not been mistyped or replaced in Live Control Room.
- The connection fails with RTMPS: Confirm you copied the RTMPS URL and that the selected MediaLive protocol and certificate configuration support that destination.
- YouTube reports a stream-health or encoding issue: Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval and bitrate with the matching current YouTube profile. Test using representative movement and audio, then monitor Live Control Room.
- The file loops but the program schedule is wrong: Remember that LOOP repeats indefinitely. For a one-time file followed by another input, use CONTINUE; for a later replay, switch away and reselect the static input.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
Looping a file changes how MediaLive ingests it; it does not grant permission to rebroadcast its contents or guarantee YouTube will allow the stream or channel to remain available. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current event and channel rules before broadcasting. A technically healthy ingest is not a determination of copyright status or compliance.
