A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To keep a file-based YouTube Live stream running from a Debian VPS, install FFmpeg, send a real-time loop of your media to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, then supervise FFmpeg with a system service and monitor both its logs and YouTube’s stream health. A VPS can keep the process running while your home computer is off, but a restart policy alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What this setup does—and what it does not
This guide covers publishing stored media from a Debian VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg. The example loops one video file. It is not a camera-capture setup, and it does not create a live feed from a camera or generate new content. YouTube treats the incoming video feed and the broadcast as separate objects; the feed must be associated with a broadcast, and the broadcast’s scheduled, started or ended state is managed in YouTube. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes the incoming feed separately from a broadcast.
“Always on” therefore means arranging for the VPS to run and supervise the encoder, and checking that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Failures can still occur in the source, host, network, encoder or YouTube ingest.
Choose a VPS and stream profile
Before renting a host, decide on the video’s codec, resolution and frame rate. Then check that the VPS can sustain the outbound bitrate, has enough monthly transfer, and has suitable CPU capacity if FFmpeg will encode video in software. Compare the provider’s actual terms for the plan and region you choose; no particular VPS plan or provider capacity is established here.

YouTube’s recommended video bitrates
These are YouTube’s current published recommendations, not a guarantee that a VPS can deliver them continuously. Use the row matching the selected codec and frame rate, and allow headroom for audio, transport overhead and network variation.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p30 | 5 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | 720p30 or 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 | 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |

Audio, keyframes and picture format
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan and square pixels.
- For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its advanced settings list 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround.
- YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second GOP is 60 frames; at 60 fps it is 120 frames.
- YouTube’s SDR guidance includes Rec. 709, 8-bit depth, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC. Do not treat SDR settings as HDR settings: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS may be considered when an encoder lacks the required RTMP capabilities.
See YouTube’s current encoder settings for its complete codec and format guidance.
Estimate continuous transfer
As an estimate, a steady 5 Mbps video payload is about 2.25 GB per hour before audio and protocol overhead. If it runs 24 hours a day for 30 days, that is roughly 1.62 TB before overhead. This is arithmetic from the stated bitrate and duration, not a provider’s transfer measurement. Check the plan’s monthly allowance and sustained outbound rate before committing.

Prepare Debian and inspect FFmpeg
- Provision a Debian VPS with enough disk space for the media and logs. Confirm the host’s outbound network capacity, transfer policy, reboot controls, region and support terms against the profile you selected.
- Connect over SSH and install FFmpeg from the package sources configured for your Debian release:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg. - Check that the executable is available and review the build:
ffmpeg -version. Available codecs and options can depend on the package build. - Put the media in a stable location such as
/srv/stream/program.mp4. Confirm the file is readable by the account that will run the service, and inspect its streams and format withffprobe /srv/stream/program.mp4.
The command below is an illustrative pattern, not a tested command for every Debian build or media file. It assumes a file that FFmpeg can decode and encode as 720p30 H.264/AAC. Verify the input, output and final RTMPS URL shape with a short test before unattended use.
Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast and get credentials
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a broadcast or schedule one. Ensure the channel is eligible to go live and that the broadcast is in the state you intend to use.
- Open the broadcast’s Stream tab or its Stream settings. Copy the stream key shown for that setup.
- Use the lock icon in Stream settings to reveal the RTMPS URL, then copy the full current URL. Verify it begins with
rtmps://; YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. Do not substitute a URL copied from an old tutorial.
YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting instructions explain where to find the secure endpoint and how to check it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. The exact endpoint is account-facing configuration, so use the value displayed in your Live Control Room.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a script committed to a repository, a command likely to be saved in shell history, or a service definition readable by everyone. Store credentials in a protected file or credential mechanism with access limited to the service account. If a key is exposed, rotate it through YouTube’s controls.
Test a real-time file loop with FFmpeg
For stored media, FFmpeg’s -re reads input at its native frame rate; put it before the input it applies to so the file is paced in real time rather than read as fast as possible. The example below loops one input indefinitely with -stream_loop -1. It sets a 60-frame GOP, which corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps.

For a playlist or changing program
The command above repeats one file; it does not define a playlist. A multi-file playlist needs an input and boundary strategy that matches how the files are encoded and how transitions should look. Check that files are compatible and test the exact playlist workflow through file boundaries before relying on it unattended. The command shown here should not be assumed to handle arbitrary files or seamless transitions.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run the command in a terminal using the protected credentials and the intended media. Confirm FFmpeg continues advancing through the input and reports no decoding or output errors.
- Open the broadcast preview in Live Control Room. Check that both motion and audio are present, and that the picture, frame rate and sound are representative of the intended stream.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages before starting or relying on the broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live and using audio and movement similar to the eventual stream. See its encoder settings and testing guidance.
- Confirm the YouTube broadcast is scheduled, started or ended as intended. A running FFmpeg process alone does not set the broadcast lifecycle.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API health documentation identifies actionable issues such as unsupported audio or video codecs, bitrate that is too low, frame-rate mismatch, keyframe-frequency mismatch and insufficient incoming video that can cause viewer buffering. See the API health-status documentation.

Run FFmpeg under a service manager
A system service can start the encoder after boot and restart it if the process exits. Use a dedicated unprivileged account, keep credentials inaccessible to other users, and send output to logs you can inspect. Validate the unit on the Debian release and service-manager configuration actually running on your VPS; there is no single unit that guarantees uninterrupted service.
For systemd, the deployment steps are to create a dedicated service account, store the command and protected credentials for that account, write a unit with an appropriate boot dependency and restart policy, then reload systemd and test start, stop and reboot behavior. Do not paste a real stream key into a world-readable unit file. Avoid treating Restart=always as proof of recovery: FFmpeg might remain alive while the source stalls or YouTube ingest is unhealthy. Consult the systemd documentation for the installed Debian release when selecting unit directives; the exact unit is an environment-specific deployment choice.
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation notes TCP keepalive support for RTMP, but a transport keepalive does not replace process supervision or checks on the incoming video. A failure may require operator intervention even when the service manager is working as configured.

- Check whether the service is active and whether it has restarted repeatedly.
- Review recent FFmpeg stderr or journal output for connection failures, encoder errors, input EOF or a source that stopped advancing.
- Watch output bitrate and CPU and memory pressure; software encoding can become a bottleneck.
- Check disk space for both the media and retained logs.
- Inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, and verify the broadcast’s scheduled, started or ended state.
- After changing media, codec, bitrate or frame rate, repeat a representative test before leaving the feed unattended.
FFmpeg, the VPS service manager and YouTube each have separate failure modes. A service restart can bring back an exited process, but it does not by itself establish that a stalled source, bad credentials, unhealthy ingest or ended broadcast has recovered.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Connection or SSL error | Wrong endpoint, protocol or server configuration | Re-copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and confirm the scheme is rtmps. YouTube’s SSL troubleshooting suggests specifying port 443 if the SSL error persists; use the endpoint details shown for your account. |
| Authentication or publishing failure | Incorrect, expired or mismatched stream key; malformed URL/key combination | Check the key in Live Control Room, confirm whether the copied URL is complete or expects a key to be appended, and keep the replacement credential protected. |
| YouTube reports unsupported codec or low bitrate | Output codec or rate does not match the stream requirements | Check FFmpeg’s output options and choose the matching YouTube recommendation for codec, resolution and frame rate. |
| Frame-rate or keyframe warning | Output cadence or GOP interval is mismatched | Verify the actual output frame rate and set the GOP from that rate: 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps gives a 2-second interval. |
| Preview buffers, freezes or has no new video | Insufficient incoming video, stalled input, CPU/network pressure or encoder problem | Check whether the input advances, inspect FFmpeg logs and resource use, verify sustained egress, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| Stream stops at the end of a file | Input is not configured to loop or the playlist reached its end | For the single-file example, use -stream_loop -1 and confirm it is positioned before the input. For a playlist, test the chosen boundary and repeat behavior explicitly. |
| Service is active but viewers do not get a healthy feed | Process is alive while source or remote ingest is stalled, or broadcast lifecycle is wrong | Check FFmpeg’s recent output and YouTube’s preview and health messages; confirm the broadcast is in the intended state rather than relying on service status alone. |

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a looping YouTube stream rather than managing Debian, FFmpeg, a VPS and service recovery yourself, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers: the price is flat per slot regardless of quality. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. After that, choose a day, week, month, 6 months or year and cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For 5 or more slots, contact support.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month.
For FFmpeg on a VPS, the operator handles host capacity, transfer, credentials, process supervision and health checks. StreamNeo removes the home-computer requirement, but you still need to supply suitable uploaded media and the YouTube stream key.
