Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo start an FFmpeg feed at a set time, get the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, build an FFmpeg command for your input, then schedule that command in the crontab of the Linux account that should run it. Use YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it, keep the stream key private, and test the scheduled job in Live Control Room before relying on it. Cron starts commands; it does not supervise FFmpeg or verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Check that the YouTube channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming overview says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and meet the minimum age requirement of 16. Confirm eligibility first; an encoder command cannot fix a channel-level restriction.
Get the stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to run.
- Use the encoder workflow and copy the stream URL and stream key shown in that stream’s settings. Check that the stream’s destination, privacy, and schedule are correct.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL if your FFmpeg build and network support it. YouTube recommends secure ingestion; RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the exact endpoint shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming one universal URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, shell history, or log, and avoid exposing it in process listings visible to other users. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the protected encoder configuration.
Choose FFmpeg settings for your source
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your upload connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends testing connection speed.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations include 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific resolution and frame-rate combinations, not a bitrate rule for every codec or source.
Transcode when you need to set output properties
Transcoding lets FFmpeg encode to a selected codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval, but it uses CPU. The example below shows the shape of a command, not a universal copy-and-paste recipe. Replace every bracketed item, including the bitrate and buffer values, with values appropriate to your source, YouTube settings, and FFmpeg build. The stream URL and key are placeholders; never substitute a real key into an unprotected public script.

Choose a GOP/keyframe interval that corresponds to about two seconds at your frame rate—for example, a frame count based on the actual frames per second. Confirm that your chosen bitrate, buffer, and codec options are valid for your output and local FFmpeg build. The precise command varies with input type, encoder availability, and the URL format supplied for your stream.
Copy streams only when the source is already suitable
Stream copying can avoid re-encoding if the input’s audio and video already meet YouTube’s accepted settings. It cannot convert an incompatible codec, bitrate, or stream characteristic. If the source does not match the required output, transcode instead. FFmpeg’s official documentation describes its command structure and options; check the documentation and local build for the input and output you actually use.

The -re option in the example reads file input at its native rate, which is useful when sending a recording as a live-paced feed; it is not appropriate for every live device or network input. Input-specific options belong before that input’s -i, while output options belong after it. For background use, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin or redirecting stdin from /dev/null so it does not wait for console input.
Schedule the command with cron
Install the job in the crontab for the Linux account that should own the stream process. Cron uses a limited environment rather than your interactive login session. The Linux crontab man page documents /bin/sh as the default shell and sets account-related environment such as HOME and LOGNAME; do not assume a GUI, your usual working directory, shell profile, or interactive PATH.

- Put the command in a script or crontab entry that uses absolute paths for FFmpeg, the input, configuration, and logs. Ensure the crontab owner can read the input and configuration and write the log.
- Use
crontab -eas the intended account to edit its user crontab. A user crontab schedule has five time/date fields followed by the command. Set the schedule for the intended start time, accounting for the host’s timezone and the cron implementation on that distribution. - Redirect standard output and errors to a protected log file, or configure cron mail handling so failures are visible. For example, append
>> /absolute/path/to/ffmpeg.log 2>&1to the command. Keep logs inaccessible to other users if they could reveal credentials. - Prevent overlapping starts if a previous stream might still be running. Cron does not automatically detect a healthy YouTube feed or guarantee that an earlier FFmpeg process has ended.
Do not assume cron will restart FFmpeg after a crash, end it at the intended stream duration, or confirm YouTube has accepted the feed. Cron is appropriate for a fixed-time launch; where you need ongoing supervision, restart policy, dependencies, or controlled shutdown, use a suitable service manager or wrapper. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation has an example that attempts recovery after temporary network failure, but that component is not a complete system-level supervisor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the actual scheduled path
Before relying on the stream, run a test that exercises the cron environment as well as the FFmpeg command. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, reviewing the Live Control Room preview, and checking stream-health messages. A cron launch, zero exit code, or running process alone does not prove the public feed is healthy.

Troubleshoot common cron and YouTube failures
The job works manually but not from cron
Cron may not inherit the working directory, environment variables, or PATH from your terminal. Use absolute paths, set only required environment variables explicitly, and check permissions as the crontab owner. Verify the behavior on your Linux distribution’s cron implementation.
FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube
Check that you copied the current URL and key for the intended stream, used the exact URL format, and selected RTMPS if supported. Confirm the FFmpeg build supports the needed protocol and that network or firewall rules allow the connection. YouTube notes port 443 as a possible setting to try if an SSL error persists. If the key may have leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in protected configuration.
YouTube receives a feed but reports poor health
Compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Check measured upload capacity and stability, then inspect the preview and health messages. A process that remains alive can still send the wrong format or fail to deliver usable audio or video.
The stream stops and cron does not bring it back
That is expected: cron schedules launches but is not a process supervisor. Decide whether the event needs a service manager or wrapper with an explicit restart and shutdown policy. Avoid simply scheduling repeated starts without a way to prevent overlapping FFmpeg processes.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube stream to keep running without leaving a Linux PC at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
