If you want prerecorded video to keep playing on a YouTube channel while your computer is off, use a hosted streaming service: upload or select your video, connect the service to your channel, and let its cloud infrastructure send the stream. This works well for loops and scheduled playlists; it is not a replacement for a live camera, interactive event, or production that needs real-time scene switching.
What a hosted service does—and what it does not do
A hosted service keeps the video source and broadcast workflow in the cloud. You upload a recording or build a playlist, configure the destination, and the service sends the video as a live stream. The PC that would otherwise play and encode the video locally can be turned off. You still need to prepare the media, configure the destination channel, and check that the resulting stream is playing correctly.
This setup is intended for prerecorded media such as an ambient loop, music stream, or educational playlist. If your plan depends on a live webcam, gameplay feed, remote guests, audience interaction, or switching between cameras and scenes as events happen, check that the specific provider supports that workflow. A prerecorded-video host should not be assumed to provide live production controls.
YouTube’s verified encoder list includes Gyre as a cloud-based option for broadcasting prerecorded video continuously without a dedicated PC or camera. YouTube also lists CamStreamer for continuous and scheduled in-camera streams; that is a different use case from hosting a prerecorded playlist. Inclusion in YouTube’s list is not a guarantee of uptime or a comparative ranking.

What you need before connecting a hosted service
- A suitable video or playlist: Confirm the provider accepts your file format, file size, resolution, and audio configuration. Check whether it converts files or expects them to be prepared in advance.
- A destination channel ready to stream: For YouTube, live streaming must be enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup guidance.
- Destination access: Depending on the service, you may authorize your channel or enter a server URL and stream key. Follow the provider’s current instructions, and treat the stream key like a password.
- Permission to use all media: Make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast the video, music, and other material in your stream.
- A way to verify playback: Plan to check the stream at its destination and monitor the provider’s status tools, if available.
How to set up a hosted prerecorded stream on YouTube
- Enable live streaming on the channel. In YouTube, open Live Control Room and complete the live-stream setup. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned start.
- Prepare the video or playlist. Check the provider’s accepted formats and limits, then upload the source files or select the media you want to loop or schedule. Confirm the playlist order and any scheduling options before going live.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In Live Control Room, create a stream or select the one you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses its server URL and stream key; a hosted provider may instead offer account authorization. Use the connection method the provider documents.
- Connect the provider to YouTube. Enter the requested destination details in the hosted service. Do not share the stream key publicly, and replace it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Run a representative test. Check the actual destination playback, including sound and motion, before relying on a long-running loop. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health. With a hosted workflow, verify both the uploaded source and the stream viewers receive.
- Start the broadcast and check its status. Confirm that YouTube shows the stream as live and that the video and audio are correct. Find out how the provider reports a failed file, a dropped connection, or a stream that needs attention.
YouTube’s help guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is YouTube-specific behavior, not a general rule for other streaming destinations or hosted services.
How to choose a hosted service
Do not choose on the phrase “24/7” alone. Compare the details that determine whether a service fits your channel and media workflow. Provider feature pages describe their own products; those claims do not establish independently verified uptime or service-level guarantees.

- Destination support: Confirm that the service supports the platform you use. If you need more than one destination, check whether it supports multistreaming and what that entails.
- Looping and scheduling: Look for the playlist, scheduling, and repeat controls you actually need.
- Media handling: Verify file formats, upload limits, conversion behavior, resolution options, and storage allowances.
- Continuity and recovery: Check what happens if YouTube disconnects, a source file fails, or the provider has an outage. Look for status visibility, documented recovery behavior, support response terms, and any contractual uptime commitment. Treat unqualified reliability claims as vendor claims.
- Access and team controls: If others will manage the channel or service, confirm how accounts, permissions, and credentials are handled.
- Current cost and terms: Check subscription and usage limits, storage, cancellation terms, destination charges, and content and data terms on the provider’s current pages. Compare the service with the cost of keeping a PC and connection available, but do not assume that plans from different providers include the same features.
Other hosted providers describe similar prerecorded-stream workflows, but their feature descriptions alone are not a basis for declaring a universal winner. Confirm current functionality and terms directly with any provider you are considering.
When a hosted service is the wrong tool
- Live camera or event: You need a camera or other real-time source and an encoder suited to that production. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers workflows with cameras, microphones, and production equipment.
- Interactive or changing production: If you must react to viewers, bring in guests, or switch scenes live, choose a setup designed for real-time control rather than assuming a playlist host can do it.
- Continuous in-camera video: A camera-streaming option such as CamStreamer may be relevant, but check compatibility and its current capabilities; it is not a substitute for prerecorded playlist hosting.
Rights, platform rules, and preflight checks
Moving the encoder to the cloud does not change the rules for the destination. YouTube says all content in live streams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it can restrict access to live streaming. Confirm you have permission to rebroadcast music, footage, and any other material in the playlist.

- Confirm the source files play correctly and contain the intended audio.
- Check that the playlist order, repeat behavior, and schedule match your plan.
- Test a representative section with both sound and motion, then verify it at the YouTube destination.
- Check the provider’s status and failure-handling process so you know what to do if the stream stops or a file fails.
- Monitor stream health after launch rather than assuming that a cloud workflow removes the need for oversight.
